I don't know about you, but since you are reading this you are probably like me and love getting stuck into a great story. For me, choose your own adventures have always been some of the most engaging and entertaining ways of enjoying a story. It allows you to explore a perfectly crafted world in ways you just can't with a standard book, plus with the joys of digital technology this level of interaction can be taken to a whole new level, and this is what I want to achieve with World Within Worlds
To make this world as engaging as possible I wanted to add the following things; Illustrations and Audio. Why tell when you can show, right?
What is the Kickstarter for?
Since the book is already written, this project is just to add further interaction and depth to the story. I'm aiming to launch on as little funding as possible to make sure as many people as possible are able to enjoy this project, meaning that I'm willing to invest myself and will be covering things like ISBN's out of my own pocket. Because of the highly interactive nature of the end product, only creating a digital version of the book both allows it to be done in the first place and helps lower the funding required to create and distribute the project by removing expensive things like printing costs and postage. The basic project funds are broken down as follows;
£300 for the minimum number of illustrations and cover art
£300 for final proof reading and editing costs
Every penny raised by this Kickstarter will go into making a bigger and better final product, and you can see just how that will work in the stretch goals below. Should we manage to exceed even these goals, then I will do my very best to find new ways to invest the extra money back into this book.
Who is involved
The writer; me! Aka David. I've been writing either professionally or as a hobby for the best part of half of my existence (or about 16 years for those who want to try and guess how old I am) and have had work published with both Deadstar Publishing, and Verse Publishing. My much much younger self also had a brief venture into vanity publishing with a short comedy novella called 'Donkey the First'. I also like long walks, Wes Anderson movies and citrus based drinks. These things may or may not be important.
The artist; Kate Evans-Cusak of Red Maiden Art will be providing the illustrations for this (and hopefully subsequent) book.
In her own words;
"My work is a twist on reality. Within a given space, I develop a pathway for others to be enveloped in a new world. I am a great enthusiast of creating beautiful visual playgrounds for the audience within any subject or following a narrative. I am interested in the relationship between human perception and what is deemed “true” reality. I draw from my own experiences and what I have sensed around me and mold it into something complex and intricate. I am flexible and adaptable to all manner of subjects and due to its unique visual display, my art is a visual mimic of today’s social context, often I echo pop-culture to provide symbolic links to the world that we as human beings find ourselves in. I work in a range of mediums however I favour the fluidity of oils and the natural rhythm of drawing in graphite.”
You can find more of her work here too. Seriously, go check it out, it's a treat for the eyes. Like imagine if eyes could eat cake without also blinding yourself in the process. It's just like that. She has also won and been shortlisted for some prizes too!

The voices; No, not the ones in my head. The voices that will be bringing this book to life with our first stretch goal.
Featuring JD Kelly as the Narrator, and along side him giving voice to the currently voiceless is Georgie Leonard and Kate Davies-Speak.
JD Kelly is a voice actor for Video Games, Audiobooks & Animation. He see's Voice work as one of the most rewarding jobs in the world as it allows him to be part of different worlds and imaginations. He is a lover of video games, anime, singing & audio books; voice acting is more than just a job to him, it’s a passion. He has been involved in many projects including: Steel Division Normandy 44, Catacombs 1: The Demon War, Virtual Army & Phantasmal : City of Darkness. Narrating audio books for Audible, he has recorded a large range of books from video game guides (Destiny, Minecraft, Magic the Gathering & Pokemon Go) to fantasy novels, history books, period drama & other non-fiction titles. He also holds a Guinness World Record for the longest time playing Minecraft where he raised over £2000 for Cancer Research. You can find out more here!
Kate Davies-Speak has been a working actress for seventeen years, playing lead and supporting roles in; European touring theatre productions, numerous short films and independent feature movies. Kate is drawn to roles that offer interesting character arcs, gritty and emotional roles and parts that encourage her to keep her physically active, she is inspired by iconic action heroines such as Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley and enjoys working out and practicing combat to use on screen. More recently Kate has had lead roles in a number of films including;playing the protagonist Jessica Harver in 'Escape from Cannibal Farm' released 2017 and plays the role of Nicole in season 1&2 of Hanover Picture's multi-award winning SciFi Web action series 'Horizon'
Georgie is a British actress who has been working as a performer in one capacity or another since she graduated from her training in Musical Theatre. An avid Shakespeare fan, she recently completed a brief spell as both Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Beatrice is Much Ado About Nothing with her theatre company, Merry Mechanicals.
While you can find her cropping up on the TV from time to time with minor roles in shows such as Sherlock and Trollied, she also has a passion for voice acting, and can be heard lending her voice to online commercials and an array of audiobooks from the macabre to the hilarious.
The composer; introducing the very talented Alex from Arpeggio Creative. Our third stretch goal tasks him with the challenge of adding his musical delights into the story, along side ambient noise and (appropriate) sound effects.
A World Within Worlds is a series of surrealist fantasy choose your own adventure books with a variety of stories to work your way through. The stories themselves feature in and out of a number of different dream worlds or 'dreamscapes' as well as what we would consider to be reality. On your adventures you will hopefully develop your own mastery over this strange new existence while meeting many characters to guide and hinder you along the way. Either that or you will just end up dying horribly, but even this result can be achieved in a number of different ways. Variety is important after all. Why and how this is happening is for you to discover on your own inside the story.
Each book contains several narratives allowing for huge re-readability, as even if you explore every option for one narrative line there are at least two diverging stories in every book. You can be both the 'good guy' and the 'bad guy', it's all about your choices and how you choose to interact with the story.
A little more detail
Book 1 contains two primary endings, and dozens of paths to advance into the next part of the story in book 2, as well as many ways to, um, not advance. As mentioned this is a surreal fantasy story, and while it includes a heavy comedy element there is also some horror too (as a warning for some potentially younger readers). There is, however, no sexual content or heavy swearing (as in nothing beyond 'heck' or 'damn'). As the player may be of any gender or race these stories are intentionally neutral to allow for maximum immersion for all players. Once the initial funding is reached, book one will include a minimum of 5 illustrations inside the book with more to be added based on stretch goals.
You can play the first draft, text only version of the story for free here
The stretch goals for this project are all about adding content value to the finished book. While the story itself will remain the same, these goals will allow the book to become the wonderfully interactive piece of fiction it has the potential to be.
£1650 - The book will be fully narrated, including character dialogues
£2150 - An extra 10 illustrations will be added
£3650 - The book will include an ambient sound track for appropriate sections of story
For every £100 past £3650 another 2 illustrations will be added to the book.
£11650 - Book 1 will have a black and white illustration on every page.
£21650 - All illustrations will be in full colour
Risks and challenges
Creating a new book, let alone one with audio and visual elements is no small task. That said, I have worked for two different publishing houses in the past and have a fair amount of experience taking a project from it's first steps as an unedited draft into its final published form.
Since the first book is already written, the basic version is just needing editing and formatting into EPUB. I believe the four months set aside for this is enough time to finish these processes. As for the audio and visual rewards, the delivery dates for this were arranged with these contributors, who I have worked with before (or have friends who have) and know to be reliable.
Of course things do sometimes get delayed, and should that be the case all backers would be immediately informed of any expected changes to completion dates. That said I am completely committed to this project, and will ensure that everyone receives what they have paid for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
