About this project
Many features, 1 device, and useful to everyone. A versatile Bluetooth 4.0 proximity tracker that performs item loss prevention, item locating, auto locks and unlocks your Mac or PC. Syncs with our Android app for even more functionality (and iOS iPhone if we reach our stretch goal). The GateKeeper (GK-Chain) is just the start of an amazing proximity technology product.
UPDATE - 3/19 - Here's a video that demonstrates GK-Chain tracking.
UPDATE - 3/17 - We will include a strong double-sided adhesive with the Kickstarter orders so that you can attach the GK-Chain to locations/objects (like your laptop).

It Locks and Unlocks PCs and Macs
As featured in:
What's the problem?- "$30 billion worth of phones lost in the U.S. every year"
- "Coffee shops, offices, bars and restaurants top the list as the most common venues to lose your phone in the U.S."
- "...people typically lose up to 9 items per day, which calculates to 198,743 in a lifetime!"
- "...according to Boston Marketing firm, the average American burns 55 minutes a day looking for things they know they own but cannot find. That adds up to a total of almost 14 days a year people spend just trying to find lost things."
- Never lose or leave your phone, keys, or valuables behind EVER again
- Save time by automatically locking and/or unlocking your computer
- Increase security with 2-factor authentication
Track Your Valuables: Purses, pets, luggage, phone - you'll be alerted when you move too far from your GK-Chain.
Parents: Can warn you if your children go out of range.
Teachers: Consistently lock your PC to prevent students from accessing it.
Health Professionals: Unlock computers automatically so that you can attend to patients.
Office: Keep co-workers or visitors from accessing your computer when you're gone.
Dorms: Don't let your friends change your Facebook status again. Ever.
Home: Protect your PC from siblings or children downloading unwanted programs.
Coffee Shop: Outside with your laptop? Ensure your privacy.
Instead of typing in your password every time, the GK-Chain unlocks your computer when you approach, and locks when you leave. Or, if you want additional security, you can set the GK-Chain to actually require the key and the password.
The GK-Chains also serve as Bluetooth 4.0 trackers. Using our free companion app, you can find your GK-Chain with a Bluetooth 4.0 enabled smartphone. This way, you'll have a little more help finding your lost keys, wallet, bag, even your luggage at the airport. The GK-Chain app will alert you when your bag is at hand.
At this point, we have an Android version of the app. If funding reaches our iOS Stretch Goal of $18K, we can finish the iOS app for all you iPhoners! In the future, Windows phones will also be supported.
More Interesting Stats:
- In the U.S. people lose a smartphone about once a year.
- 120,000 cell phones are lost annually in Chicago taxi cabs
- 56% of us misplace our cell phone or laptop each month
- According to HIPPA Security Standard, users should "terminate an electronics session after a predetermined time of inactivity. But "automatic logoff is an effective way to prevent unauthorized users from accessing EPHI on a workstation when it is left unattended for a period of time. "
We wanted to provide PC and Mac users both additional security and convenience. It's a great item for anywhere that you'd use your PC.
The GK-Chain tracks the location of the key using a proprietary signal strength algorithm and locks/unlocks your computer based on where you are.
Is it secure? Yes! GK-Chains use a modulating, encrypted connection to enable only a unique key to interface with the lock. The password is encrypted and still stored on your PC, not the GK-Chain – So no one can steal it.
Where the project stands:
We've been working on the GK-Chain for a while. After several rounds of PCB designs for the locks and the keys, we're ready to send the designs to our manufacturer to start a pilot run.
The GateKeeper software is currently being beta-tested. It currently works on Windows 7 and Windows 8. We're working on the Mac OS version of the software and hope to have it ready by the end of the Kickstarter campaign. So you Mac users - please do contribute to our campaign!!
We have identified and are working with a manufacturer to produce the GK-Chains. We have worked with this manufacturer on another project - the SunFriend UVA+B monitor. We finished the pilot production run for the SunFriends and they look great. We have been extremely happy with the manufacturer's commitment and the quality of their work.
We have a schedule for the tooling, pilot production and full production runs. We've also laid out the costs of materials for the circuit boards, plastic, packaging, and distribution. The table below shows tentative schedule we have worked out with our manufacturer.
We are currently getting the first manufacturer made prototypes. These prototypes will be thoroughly tested by us before we approve the tooling process.
The tooling process is expected to start in the middle of March and be completed by end of April. The month of May will be spent in a pilot production run of 200 units. We will use these units to achieve several objectives. We will use some for FCC certification for our product. We will also use some for reliability testing and failure analysis to ensure that our product is robust and reliable. A large portion of these pilot run samples will be used by our marketing team to obtain more orders. We are already in talks with several businesses including hospitals, banks, small companies and others in the Washington DC area to buy the GK-Chains for their needs.
The first production runs will be in June with expected delivery of the first 4000 devices by the middle of July. The first of these will be used to fulfill the Kickstarter orders.
The GK-Chain is almost a finished product. Given the chance, we'd really love to polish its appearance and make them less expensive to purchase. That's where Kickstarter comes in! We want to take the product from the prototypes to a production-run with your continued support.
So far we have built all the different designs using our awesome Airwolf 3D XL printer. In fact, we will be supplying a few of these version 1.0 prototypes to a select few backers. We're currently in contact with a manufacturer that can produce the new case. With Kickstarter's help, we can fund the FCC certification, tooling costs, and other pre-production costs for the GK-Chain.
The GK-Chains are just the first in a line of planned projects using the technology and software. We are currently working on prototypes for a real-time concussion detector and a pulse oximeter. There are many great applications and with your support, we can continue to provide new beneficial technologies.
New Designs: In addition, we are working on new designs for GateKeeper for specific needs. For example, one design attaches the GK-Chain to a company's identification badge. The ID badge will then serve as an additional security tool to lock/unlock an employee's computer.
The team behind GK-Chain has several years of experience in a variety of projects with NASA, DoD, and Children's Hospital doing semiconductor device modeling, circuit modeling, sensor fabrication, chip design, and systems engineering.
1. I need more than one GK-Chain. What should I do?
Just put in a pledge amount in the appropriate perk, and contact us immediately.
2. Do the GK-Chains work? Or is this just an idea concept?
They work! There might not be any fireworks or special effects, but the GK-Chain will definitely lock your computer. Convenience.
AND the BEST PART - we never forget our phones or our keys anymore...
3. Is the distance adjustable?
Yes. The distance can be changed with the attached software. You can make the GK-Chain activate when you enter the room, or you can change the distance so you have to be very close to your computer.
4. What if I want multiple USB locks for multiple computers?
This can be done! Each GK-Chain comes with 1 lock, but if you would like more, please add $10 for each extra USB lock. Send us a message letting us know you would like another lock.
5. Does it take a long time to set up?
Less than a minute. After connecting the GK-Chain lock to your PC, it takes a moment to connect. There's a simple, one-time setup after that where you type in your password. And also download our app to sync with your phone.
6. Does it do anything else?
Actually, it does! The GK-Chain has a KeyAlert app! You run the app on your phone and the phone will beep if it's too far away from your keys. This could cut down on those times where you get up and accidentally leave your keys behind. We're working on EVEN MORE applications!
7. What colors does it come in?
For now, it will be a matte black or silver finish. Let's work together to reach our stretch goals to unlock more colors :)
We have made prototypes on our 3D printer in many other colors, we'll have them in new colors in no time! If you want custom colors or print designs, contact us!
Risks and challenges
As with many hardware technology projects, maintaining a strict production schedule is our biggest challenge. Once we get funded, there will be a lot of decisions to make! We'll have to settle on what materials we can make the GK-Chain cases from; if that takes longer than we predict, it'll slow down our delivery time. We have tried to reduce that risk by developing a relationship with the manufacturer through another project.
Finally, we've also already overcome the biggest obstacles of all - knowing whether the product works - because we're already producing functioning prototypes. The technology works. At this point, the question isn't whether we can make it work (because it does), the question is how many we should produce!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
