I am launching a project called 'Finland's Birds' while on-site at the Arteles Center as an artist in residence this July.
Did you know that Finland has over 450 different kinds of native birds?
Hello! -- My name is Stephanie Chambers and I'm a Brooklyn, NY based painter. I've been accepted to the Arteles Center Summer artist residency in Western Finland for this July and plan to study, track and create a body of artwork based on the indigenous bird population of Finland.
I am a 2003 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and have been making artwork exclusively about nature for the last 5 years. I am inspired, captivated, and enthralled by the enormous variety of birds in the world and within the last year, I began a works on paper project featuring birds and patterns. Here's one example:
In Finland, I'll be staying in the village of Hameenkyro, which is about 200km west of Helsinki. I'll be spending about half my time outside studying, tracking and drawing from life the various birds I discover. The other half of the time I'll be in the studio making the body of work, which will incorporate traditional Scandinavian and Finnish design elements into the patterning.
I've decided to launch a Kickstarter to help with costs related to the project, such as travel expenses (airfare from JFK-->Helsinki, + train), cost of the residency (I received a 50% scholarship, but that still leaves half) and art supplies for the month (ex. 1 sheet of paper costs $15, 1 tube of paint costs $30).
In exchange for your donation, you will receive the artwork from the Finland Bird project, such as drawings, paintings and limited edition prints. All images will be created on-site in Finland and I have discounted the prices as a special thank you for your Kickstarter contribution.
All materials used are archival and all artwork, including prints come with a signed certificate of authenticity.
Please reach out if you have any questions. I am so grateful for your support!

Hi Everyone - In the drawings, I use Windsor & Newton acrylic paint, but wrote ink in two of the drawing pledge categories. The paint is much better than using ink. It won't fade over time and I use the professional series, which has rich, solid colors. Thanks!
You guys are the best so the shipping is included. Domestic and international. Thanks!
The prints will be based off of the 9.5 x 7.5 inch drawings. Depending on how they scan, they will either be 9.5 x 7.5 or 10 x 8 inches. Either way, they will fit nicely into standard 8x10 inch frames. Thanks!
