Welcome to Waking Up Eric Claud, an adventure-type 2D puzzle-platformer game, set in a trickster world of dreams. Play Eric, a man trapped in a realm of puzzles, and help him in his odyssey of waking up. You will take part in a unique and innovative gameplay experience where your choices will set off changes all around you, just like in a dream. Guide Eric wisely through each stage or just enjoy discovering the twists and turns of this surprising environment. What if you fail to wake up? Well, there is no failure in a dream.

Dream mechanics are at play here but with one exception – it’s impossible to wake up. Just like the REM sleep cycle you have 3 levels in your Sleep-o-meter and your choices during game control will determine the sleep level.

Sleep-o-meter shows your sleep depth. If you're nearly awake, you’ll notice that your surroundings become more realistic.

For instance jumping down from a high spot would result in your sleep level decreasing. But if you want to fall deeper into slumber you could try taking sleeping pills.

Changes in the sleep level will be your main tool to solve the puzzles by means of transforming the environment and introducing you to new solutions. There are many trigger actions that can alter your sleep levels -  all of which you will discover throughout the game.

Every action leads to new discoveries that will unleash the secrets of the puzzle realm.

And if you succeed in waking up and finishing the game you can experience the story in lucid mode, in a higher state of consciousness during an extra sleep level!

Eric has 3 main tools:

  • A journal to remember events
  • A spyglass to read the map
  • Sleeping pills for an easy way to go into a deeper sleep

You’ve got the whole world in your hands. Eric’s spyglass is the World itself!

An inverted tower of 4 floors, all with different landscapes, and with clouds on top. The reason we see it round is that we see it from Eric’s view point, top down, from the end of the Spyglass!

  • 1st chapter: the Gardens, where Eric hones his skills and learns about the enemies
  • 2nd chapter: the Town, the rumours and lies, things turn a little weird
  • 3rd chapter: the Graveyard, full of surprises, meeting the undead friends
  • 4th chapter: the Heavens, over the clouds, a realm of serenity
  • 5th chapter: the Hell, in the center of the Eye, where Eric encounters the Boss

Your enemies have already surrounded you! The prime evil Lord Duvar, and his 4 minions rule over the trickster world.

Lord Duvar – The prime evil , ruler of fears, ruler of dreams, the Morpheus, the Mephisto, rises like a wall that prevents Eric from waking up

Pest the Fire Demon – The eldest of the minions, the main servant of evil

Greed – Harbouring danger, lies and unsatisfied desires in the Human flesh

Kuracoda the Fox – A shapeshifter with demonic speed, a cunning force of nature

Ray the Kid – Hideous son of the Sun

Eric Claud is our hero, the main character of the game. We are introduced to his world and see things from his point of view.

He had been dreaming about this for a long time, but could never have guessed that he would end up trapped! Fully conscious in his red pajamas and yellow cloak, he is an extraordinary hero.

He is more of an ordinary man with feelings and fears but carries a great courage deep inside.

Throughout the game you will discover his childhood memories, and using them will be great fun!

In Waking Up Eric Claud, basic moves are controlled with the keyboard while more complex actions and interactions  like picking up/using are controlled via the mouse. You may chose to play with a right handed cursor or a left handed cursor.
You will also be able to play the game via the gamepad.

Waking Up Eric Claud will simultaneously be available for Windows, Mac and Linux. This is also valid for the early access launch.

We are interested in consoles and mobile platforms depending on the success of this campaign at stretch goals.

Waking Up Eric Claud first came to us as a concept in June 2013. The trigger was Eric himself -  we had created a rough design of him, and had him perform his first ride on his bike. The bike is still in the game, to use whenever he needs.

On to this we built a background that draws from Greek mythology and pyschoanalysis. This means an absorbing story with lots of strange creatures and symbolic objects that have deeper relations.

We were inspired by the magnificent arts of the last centuries to build the structure and design of our game. The most significant ones are:

  • J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings
  • Goethe’s Faust
  • Neil Gaiman’s storytelling
  • Illustrations of Gustave Doré
  • Marvel Comics
  • Christopher Nolan’s Inception

The games that encouraged us most were:

  • Braid
  • Limbo
  • Oldschool adventures like Machinarium
  • Lucas Arts classics

We come together in our passion to create new worlds.

Coşku Baş, Coding - a self-taught programmer who loves indie games with a passion. As a mechanical engineer his day job consists of designing robots but game design and programming has always been his dream.

Murat Burhanoğlu, Design - an artist with an engineering background and corporate career. He has quit his job to follow his dreams and design his own game.

Ela Atakan, Scenario - a political science PhD student,  a writer of brilliant short stories, poems and movies, now sharing her talent with us.

Working with a publisher or an investor carries the risk of slowing down the process and leading to an inconsistency of vision. Kickstarter is a great way for us to reach our audience directly and using the feedback to improve our game and story.

Early access will be available in August 2015 and the full launch in November 2015.

Our first goal will be enough to finish the game without the need of additional financial support. We will work full time on the game to finish it on schedule. The distribution of our budget will be as follows.

Risks and challenges

We have a fairly complex game mechanics that needs to be supported with lots of assets. However we already made an early prototype and we are fully aware of what to expect. We took this into account before deciding our goal and deadline.

We believe game development requires serious project management skills and we have accumulated considerable years of professional experience in this field. We are an ambitious and excited team, working together on a strict schedule and defined scope to create one of the all time best video games.

Meeting our goal will give us enough money to finish the game without the need for additional financial support. Higher pledges will increase the diversity of our in-game content and the complexity of our puzzles, which will result in a higher level of fun and adventure.
