The Arctic Flight (patents pending) is an attractive articulated stand for the iPad 2, 3 and 4.
The Arctic Flight features include:
Travel, the Arctic Flight can be slipped behind the closed-and-locked tray table of a coach airline seat, turning your iPad into a fully adjustable, heads-up display with your content already on it!
Lightweight, it weighs just 13 oz (370 g), about half the weight of the iPad itself.
Compact, the Arctic Flight folds for transport, making it fit easily in a carry-on bag or briefcase. When folded, the Arctic Flight acts as a cover for the iPad's screen.
Ergonomic, the Arctic Flight adjusts in elevation, tilt and orientation. The elevated design allows for comfortable use of a separate keyboard, even in a coach airline seat.

Risks and challenges
In prototype form, the Arctic Flight is fully functional. The prototypes you are seeing are real, and they work. However, each of them is made by an arduous process involving a lot of handwork. In production, I'll automate the manufacture of the parts to achieve reduced cost and improved quality.
I've identified suppliers (almost entirely within the U.S.) who can produce each of the Arctic Flight's parts. However, the process of building the first "manufacturing prototypes" (prototypes built using the same processes and materials that will be used in large scale production) is only just beginning. If all goes well, the final prototyping process will be completed in just a few weeks.
Of course, as with any product, unanticipated delays are possible. Some parts may not arrive on time, or may not meet specification. I may find that parts manufactured by one supplier don't quite fit parts made by another. So, I may need to adjust my design specs, or possibly change suppliers.
To mitigate the possibility of delays, I've included some extra time in my development schedule, I've chosen suppliers with strong reputations and track records, and I've chosen suppliers nearby, within the U.S. Having domestic suppliers eliminates any language barrier and enables me to travel to the suppliers' sites at a moment's notice to resolve any issues face-to-face. Hopefully, with a little luck, we'll be delivering Arctic Flights right on time!
