About the Project
Over the past several years I've been playing country gospel music in various venues and have been uploading videos of my music to YouTube. Friends and YouTube subscribers keep asking me where they can buy my album. And with over half a million YouTube views in the past four years and nearly 1,000 subscribers, I think there might be enough of folks interested to make it worth my time to do this. So my plan is to release an album of covers of old gospel songs. I'm recording and mixing the songs myself. If this goes well, I'll consider doing an album of original songs in the near future.
The album will consist of 14 tracks and will be released in the Spring of 2014. The core of the album will be old gospel favorites, such as, "How Far is Heaven," "But For the Blood," and "What a Beautiful Day." The gospel songs will include songs made popular by singers such as Kitty Wells, Dottie Rambo, Happy Goodman, the Easter Brothers, and the Gaithers. The album will also include a few old inspirational country hits, such as, "Daddy's Hands" (Holly Dunn) and "The Little Girl" (John Michael Montgomery).
I've committed my time to recording this album, but the money it takes to pull off something like this is substantial. So I've decided to try KickStarter to allow friends and fans a chance to help make this project a reality. KickStarter is a crowd-funding website that allows you to support projects you believe in. In return for contributing $20 toward my funding campaign, I will promise to send you one album once the project is complete. This means that you can pre-order the album and help me out by giving me the cash I need to get the album made.
So what's the money going for? It's going to cost $1000-$1500 to get the appropriate licenses and copyright permissions to record these songs, create the album jacket artwork, duplicate a few hundred CDs, and set up digital distribution. If perchance, we exceed $1500 any extra funds will allow me to order more CDs, do more marketing, or perhaps upgrade my studio equipment.
Note that if I do not reach $1000 in 30 days, you will not be billed a cent. This is how KickStarter works. Nobody pays until the goal is met. So if you contribute and pre-order your CD, be sure to tell other folks who might be interested in this album so that we reach our goal and you get your album.
Risks and challenges
Nearly all the songs are already recorded, so when we reach the $1000 goal the main thing standing between you and the finished album will be finishing the album artwork and getting the album duplicated. At this time, my goal is have the album ready to release in April 2014, but I will keep you updated on the progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
KickStarter will only charge your card after the funding window on my project is closed on January 20, 2014. The reason KickStarter operates this way is because if a project does not get funded (meaning, the project does not reach its funding goal) nobody gets charge a cent.
The album release is projected to be in April 2014. Backers will be get updated on progress and any change to projected release dates.
The $1000 goal was based on the minimum amount needed to fund this project. The actual budget for this project is closer to $1500. Basically, the more people pre-order the album on KickStarter the more CDs I will be able to order.
