Mysterious Things #1 is a magical 20 page full-color comic created by Napua Ahina and illustrated by Justin Ayers. It contains 17 story pages and 3 pages of bonus art! The main characters are all strong females, and the content is safe for older children and teens.
The book is already finished and ready to go! The first printing sold-out during its debut (at Amazing Hawaii Comic Con in August 2017). This will be a special second printing exclusive for Kickstarter backers with a variant wrap-around-cover. The funds we raise will go towards production of issue #2.
Tempest Jinn is a genie and an ancient war hero. Thousands of years ago she had to make the terrible choice between saving the world or saving her family. She decided to save the world... and she's been struggling under the weight of her decision ever since. But now that she's been resurrected into the modern world, will she seek vengeance? Or will she reclaim her destiny?
"I was a 'tomboy' growing up. My parents bought me Barbie which I never played with... except for Astronaut Barbie because, well, space adventures! I have a brother close to my age so we used to watch GI Joe, Thundercats, and He-Man together on Saturday mornings. But when She-Ra came out, I just couldn't believe it! The hero was a princess, in a skirt, with a bedazzled sword, and rides a talking pegasus?! She was girly and she was magnificent! So years later when it came to making my own comic book, I knew it had to be something that recaptured that same feeling I had the very first time I saw She-Ra. Strong. Magical. Fabulous." - Napua Ahina, writer
Mysterious Things isn't just the title of the book, it's also the name of a magical antique shop in the story. Most of the story takes place in the modern city of Metroville. But there are also frequent flashbacks to the ancient city of Alwehran (also called Avalon and Atlantis), an idyllic place where many different magical species live together peacefully.
Tempest Jinn: A powerful D'jinn (genie) who wields elemental storm magic. She was once a war hero and saved the world. But she has been imprisoned in a bottle for thousands of years and is trying to reunite with her family.
Madame Mystery: Benevolent sorceress, protectress of Metroville, and leader of the all-female superhero team Aegis. Owns the magical antique shop, Mysterious Things.
Misery: Sadistic evil sorceress and twin sister of Madame Mystery.
Bunny Boom-Boom: Killer rabbit for hire. She looks cute and cuddly, but she's got a vicious streak a mile wide!
Pages start as traditional drawing on paper (blue pencil sketches & marker inks).
After the pages are inked, they are scanned. Digital colors, rendering, special fx, and lettering are added to make a finished page.
The book will also have a special wrap-around design for the front & back cover of the comic. This variant cover by Julia Philip is an exclusive only available for Kickstarter backers!
Prints have a holographic sparkle finish. Shiny! 11x17 features the Kickstarter exclusive cover art by Julia Philip. 8x10s feature pinup art by DJ Keawekane. All prints and comics will be signed by series creator Napua Ahina.
As a bonus for Early Bird backers, we are thrilled to offer a limited number of sketch cards by our series illustrator Justin Ayers! Each card is a one-of-a-kind original featuring one of the characters from Mysterious Things. One sketch card will be randomly added to all Early Bird rewards. (Note: The photo above shows samples of other cards by Justin. These are samples only- not the actual cards you'll receive!)
Hooray we have already hit our funding goal!!! Our stretch goals are $1500 and $1800.
If we hit the first stretch goal ($1500), we'll be able to add 4 extra story pages. So that means that the "stretched book" will have a total of 24 pages! The script for the extra pages is already written (it was part of the original script, but was cut for budget reasons). It will feature more villainy by Misery and Bunny Boom-Boom on a shipwrecked pirate's frigate. Help us reach the stretch goal so these pages can come to life!
The second stretch goal ($1800) will allow backers who pledged $25 or more to receive a bonus print. It features the original "regular" cover art by Ellavela with gold foil embellishments, and is a special thank you to our backers for supporting Mysterious Things!

Risks and challenges
Hooray the content for issue #1 is already done! The first printing of Mysterious Things #1 sold-out during its debut at Amazing Hawaii Comic Con in August, but we are ready to do a second printing for all the lovely Kickstarter backers. But please note that if we reach our stretch goal, the new pages will need to be created... which will add some production time to the project.
Thank you for your support! We hope you enjoy the book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
