About

My "Number 9" mechanical pencil features an all-metal, hand-machined body with an attractive satin finish, available in a range of grip styles, metals, and lead sizes. This is a solid, premium pencil that will last a lifetime!

Where it all started...

Early last year, I bought a couple of cheap mechanical pencils with machined metal bodies. Unfortunately, they weren't great, and I started thinking how I could make my own design completely from scratch.

I love the look and feel of the classic hexagonal pencil, so I chose to combine it with a variety of different grip designs, ranging from a simple plain taper through to an "interrupted" fine square knurl pattern.

For the internal mechanism, I chose to use the popular "sharp" style. This has been around for nearly 50 years and has stood the test of time. It's robust, simple and reliable. It's also very easy to swap out if you have several pencils with different lead sizes or grip styles.

I have made many dozens of pencils over the last year in both these and other bespoke designs. Both the design and manufacturing process are 100% finalised.

The process

I sand and buff the stock material on a belt sander to produce an attractive, even satin finish on all the "faces" of the hexagonal body. Great care is taken to ensure that all faces have exactly the same finish. If there's even the slightest mark or blemish, it's sanded all over again until the finish is perfect. I then machine the body on my lathe, using a variety of custom tools and fixtures which I designed to help produce the various grip styles.

All of the grip patterns are cut, even the fine knurls. Traditional knurling processes use a tool to "press" the knurl pattern into the metal, which often deforms it and leaves an irregular finish. By cutting the patterns, I can ensure a perfectly clean, regular design.

Here's a quick overview of the more interesting parts of the production process.

Dimensions

Overall length (tip to button) is 144mm. The hexagonal part of the body is 8mm across flats. The diameter of the round knurled grips is 7.7mm.

Grip styles

Enough talking! What can you get? I'm offering four different categories of grip styles, corresponding to the different pledge levels. Each grip style has its own code and I'll ask you to specify this in the survey you'll receive once the Kickstarter finishes. Don't worry - you'll receive full instructions on how to do this.

The "Taper - plain" styles are as close as you'll get to a traditional pencil. Both "high" and "low" tapers are available. The "low" taper blends in better with the taper of the tip and moves the grip slightly further back.

For a little bit of extra grip, the "Taper – grooved" styles add a series of turned grooves. Again, both "high" and "low" tapers are available. The high taper (code THG) is actually my favourite everyday pencil!

If you prefer a round grip instead, the "Knurl – continuous" style mimics the appearance of many classic mechanical pencils. The round grip makes it easier to rotate the pencil to use the lead uniformly.

Finally, the "Knurl – interrupted" style offers the ultimate grip!

Other choices - metal, clip, and lead size

(You'll get a chance to specify these on the surveys sent out after the Kickstarter finishes.)

I'm offering the bodies in aluminium, brass or stainless steel. All have the same satin finish. Aluminium is the lightest, followed by stainless and then brass:

  • Aluminium 14g
  • Brass 28g
  • Stainless 25g

Both aluminium and brass are softer than stainless, so they will gather marks through use. The brass will also form patina over time, so don't expect it to stay bright and shiny!

The pocket clip is included. Personally, I rarely use it and prefer the "sleeker" look of the pencil body without the clip or corresponding groove in the body. If you prefer not to have the clip, you'll be able to specify this in the survey.

Lastly, all the pencils are available in 0.5, 0.7, or 0.9mm lead diameters.

Packaging

Each pencil is supplied in a sturdy twist-action plastic storage tube:

Both the tip and button are protected with short lengths of nylon tubing to prevent damage.

Eraser

For what use it is, there's still the little eraser underneath the end cap. Personally, I've never found them to be much good, but it's better than nothing!

Keep up to date

I will post updates on the Kickstarter page and also regularly on my Instagram feed at @lindsay.wilson.88 (https://www.instagram.com/lindsay.wilson.88/). I'm using the #lindsaypencil hashtag on Instagram for all my pencil-related activities, so please make sure to follow it as well.

Thank you for the interest, and I hope you enjoy the pencils!

Risks and challenges

I've no way of telling how popular this will be! That's why I've given a shipping estimate of February 2020, just to be on the safe side. The design/construction of the pencils and the manufacturing process are completely finalised - I'm not doing any other modifications or experiments. The pencils you see on this page will be EXACTLY what you get. Obviously, I will start work on the pencils as soon as I see progress on the Kickstarter, and I would expect to start shipping well before the February 2020 date I've mentioned.
