PiRingo from 4tronix
Round and round she goes. Where she stops, nobody knows!
The PiRingo from 4tronix is a new and fun add-on board for the Raspberry Pi, with festive designs for the Christmas season. Great for bringing children and newcomers into programming with demo software in both Python and Scratch.
With all 5 of these festive designs you can create software that is both visually appealing and interactive. Demo software will be released as open source when the Kickstarter campaign is finished and will be available to all.
What is in the Pack?
The PiRingo is delivered as a kit with very simple soldering required to build the complete board. Every PiRingo has 12 LEDs of various colours and 2 switches. Although we are specifying 5 designs, there is no reason why you cannot design your own. Let us know what designs you come up with!
As well as the LEDs, switches, GPIO header and resistor networks, we also include an 11mm metal spacer and screws so you can fix the board securely to your Raspberry Pi. This is really important when the children are pressing the switches, or the board can move around and damage connectors.
What Designs Are there?
1. Christmas Wreath (aka Traffic Lights)
4 Red LEDs, 4 Yellow LEDs and 4 Green LEDs. Why not make a program that simulates traffic lights or a pelican crossing?
2. Ice Blue
6 Blue LEDs and 6 White LEDs. Ideal for chasing games. You can even have a 2 player game where one person controls the white LEDs and the other controls the Blue LEDs. Great festive fun!

3. Holly and Ivy
6 Green LEDs and 6 Red LEDs. As with the Ice Blue this one is ideal for chasing lights as well as Stop and Go simulations
4. Mistletoe and Wine
4 Red LEDs and 8 White LEDs. You could simulate a simple clock with a solid LED representing the hour and a flashing LED representing the minute hand. Probably best to run it slightly faster, using minutes and seconds! We use this one as a reaction test: one player starts the LEDs moving and the second player has to stop it on the topmost LED. If they succeed, then it goes again - but faster!
5. Fairy Lights
3 Blue LEDs, 3 Red LEDs, 2 Yellow LEDs, 2 Green LEDs and 2 White LEDs. Twinkle, twinkle little star. How I wonder what you are!
There are basically 4 pledge levels:
- Early bird single board (select one of 5 designs)
- Early bird "Totally Ringo" (all 5 designs at a bargain price)
- Standard pledge single board
- Standard pledge "Totally Ringo"
We will ship all Early Bird pledges first, followed by the standard pledges in order of pledging.
Where are we now?
We have the pre-production boards shown working in all the pictures. All the components to meet all Early Bird pledges are already in stock and the first batch of Production PCBs will be ordered on 1 week turnround as soon as we see the level of pledges - we won't wait for Kickstarter to release payments before ordering and won't even wait for the Kickstarter to end! Once it is fully funded, we will order the first batch of PCBs.
Software has been developed in Python for many of the demos and the Scratch interface is complete - many thanks to Simon Walters for his sterling work as always! Updates will be provided during the Kickstarter campaign so you know where we are with the demo software.
Who are 4tronix?
4tronix have been trading on eBay and Amazon since 2009 and have an excellent record of customer service. We are experienced at putting kits together with exactly what is needed for the user. For several years we have been doing this for Arduino kits and for the last year have been doing the same for Raspberry Pi. Recently we have developed our own 4WD robotics platform "Initio" as well as a robotics controller for the Raspberry Pi, "PiRoCon". These were developed with excellent co-operation from some of our suppliers and we will use some of the same suppliers for the PiRingo to ensure reliable quality and timeliness.
Risks and challenges
There is no technical risk to the product as we have working prototypes already. The main risk is in being able to get these boards in your hands before Christmas. We recognise that the timescales are very tight, so we are mitigating this risk in every way we can. We already have the components on hand and as soon as we're sure we will meet our target we will be ordering the production boards on a 1 week leadtime. With it being a simple board, we don't anticipate any problems shipping the boards to us in time.
Also, as soon as we get a feel for the kits that are being pledged for, we will start the kitting process so all we need to do is pop the PCBs in at the last moment. 4tronix have been making and shipping kits for several years and have plenty of experience doing this.
If the number of pledges looks like exceeding our stock of components, we will order more immediately. We will ship the kits in the order that they were pledged for, so Early Birds will be getting their kits in plenty of time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
