About this project

We've tested this product on those with cerebral palsy and we feel it would work for those with essential tremor. However we hope this will work for anyone with unwanted arm movements whilst eating.

To make the spoon the best it can be, we're on Kickstarter to help fund an aluminium tool so we can produce the spoon using injection moulding in the best material possible.

You know the story of S'up Spoon but let us shower you with pretty pictures and other things!

When did we know it could help others?

We gave Grant a couple of spoons with selected spoon heads and handles to use for Christmas 2013.

The feedback we got was pretty convincing:

"I successfully used them to eat Chinese with at least two portions of rice as well as a banana fritter and ice cream totally independently, and with very little spillage - this is major breakthrough as eating rice in a restaurant would just be unthinkable before... I had 3/4 of a plate of soup with minimal spillage (again another first) before a spoon-head broke off from the handle " - it is a prototype after all, and he had it fixed with blue duct tape.

We noticed a need for others and looked at manufacturing. We weren't keen on lowering quality for this product. We had to find the right materials and the right form. This left us with a ambidextrous spoon and a new form to suit more mouths and hands.

 Rewards

Having tested it with a few users and received feedback from support workers, family & friends of those who could benefit from the spoon, we have this very realistic target. We thought we'd share with you where the money goes:

Risks and challenges

The risk involved should be limited, the packaging, postage and labeling will probably be the hardest challenge. We're aiming to get the spoon into peoples hands by Christmas. However there can be delays such as problems with manufacturing, postage and suppliers.

We're using Tritan as the material for the spoon. Our testing shows contents such as cornflakes fall out, this might not be the case with the final product. This spoon is to help with foods but we can't promise it being a holy grail outcome. This we hope to develop over the next few years with new materials.

This Kickstarter project has a goal specifically set up to just cover the cost of manufacturing; it’s surprising how much we lose in taxes and fees. We hope to go beyond our target because we want to increase colour options and potentially look at a steel tool to reduce the split line and get a longer lifespan.
