ABOUT THE SCRIPT

"He lays out a very real Warhol before us, never sugaring the pill." - Pip Utton for FringeReview.

Garry has been working on this exciting new piece for a few years now. The play looks at Warhol's early life and his obsessive determination to "become famous". Warhol was obsessively self-conscious so much so he found it impossible to have meaningful physical sexual intimacy. His father left him a contribution toward his education to go to college. This Warhol excelled at and was recognised by his tutor to be "the most gifted and talented student I've ever seen."

Andy eventually moved to New York and got his dream job as a commercial artist. The factory came later along with the extraordinary explosion of ideas and concepts that would shake the pop art world. This did not come easily and Roost unfolds the story, the lives and tragic losses of those who lived and died in the factory. A darkly witty take on the American icon of pop art.

ABOUT GARRY

"Don't think about making art, just get it done." - Andy Warhol (1928-87)

Garry Roost is an English actor. In 2008, he played Alan Daniels in the BBC soap opera Eastenders. He has also appeared in episodes of The Bill, Doctors and London’s Burning, amongst others. He is most often recognized in the street for his bit-part in Black Books – ‘Creepy Guy Fiddling With His Balls at the Water Cooler’ – a role which did not win him a BAFTA.

Garry's first published script chronicles the life of the artist Francis Bacon. With support from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pope Head was published in March 2015.

ABOUT 49KNIGHTS

49Knights Independent Publishing House, Edinburgh & Cambridge, was established to do for play scripts what the fair trade movement has done for tea and coffee – to reduce the distance between the producer and the consumer so as to bring maximum reward to the producer and maximum quality to the consumer. The artists we collaborate with retain 100% ownership of their work as well as the performance rights.

Our approach to content is inspired by Ben Jonson’s 1616 Folio. Jonson was the first English playwright to edit his plays to be read as well as performed. We hope that the result is as immersive an experience as seeing the scripts performed live. As publishers, our job is to be the studio sound engineer, getting the artist on record with a minimum of distortion and distraction. It’s vital to the integrity of each project that the artist makes all the artistic decisions – it’s their voice that matters.
