About this project
"Some darker moments in The Northerner will reflect the night sky and the ancient light that has always caressed our eyes. Since my childhood, I have been intensely interested in astronomy. Structures in the symphony will reflect the constellations. I will leave it to the musicologists to unearth where these secrets have been buried within the score." - Jeremy Soule

"Kickstarter offers us a wonderful opportunity, and with your help, we can kindle the beginnings of what will be a new way in which to bring life to music in the concert hall and into the lives of others. I want to thank you in advance, dear friends and supporters, for your kindness, enthusiasm, and belief in what I do. I look forward to writing this work for you." -Jeremy
Risks and challenges
"I will be working with the same team that has provided reliable and excellent support throughout my career. Recordings aren't easy to make, but if planning is done within a reasonable time frame, the process can go smoothly. As we have delved into the initial planning stages of the recording session, scheduling for the summer months affords us enough planning time for a recording of this nature." -JeremyLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
"Good question! My original plan was to rely more heavily on the computers and digital instruments while I would "sweeten" important parts of the scores with live singers and musicians. This is exactly how I made the score for Skyrim. However, as we raise more money, I'm able to replace digital elements with real acoustic performances.
To fully replace all digital instruments with live performances, I would have to hire somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 musicians and 50 singers. Not including costs such as cartage, taxes, payroll fees, music prep and venue rental, this can come out to about $10K per hour in a city like London or LA. Of course, arguments can be made to record in places like Russia or China where costs can be less. As a producer, I will equally weigh the quality of the venue, recording technology, musicianship and business conditions in my process to arrive at the ideal scenario for this recording.
Certainly, it is a complex process to plan a live recording. It becomes easier once I know what my resources are. In any case, I will use my experience to deliver exactly the best recording possible at our budget." - Jeremy Soule
"The idea behind Kickstarter is that it isn't a store but a way to support new ideas. The rewards are here as a thanks for your contribution towards making this symphony even possible. I know some people don't want to pay for postage. I do apologize for the international costs. The USPS just raised rates dramatically in recent weeks.
At this point, it would be too late to change direction in our rewards, but we will send a digital download link to everyone that has contributed for a CD. This will include an option for FLAC or mp3... and get this... we will even offer a 24 BIT 96 Khz ULTRA HIGH FIDELITY VERSION for no extra cost!!!! Believe me, unless you've already heard 24 bit 96K audio, you don't know what you've been missing all these years at iTunes. Compressed audio--even FLAC at 16 bit doesn't hold a candle to 24/96. And fortunately, many computers can play this format. So again, I appreciate your contribution and support of this project! We hope this sweet audio "upgrade" brings you a brighter day!" - Jeremy Soule
"This is the first symphony ever to appear on Kickstarter and we are evaluating the situation each day. It is still early in our campaign, but we hope to find logical ways to give you insight into the symphonic composing and recording process. Stay tuned..." -Jeremy Soule
"Absolutely! It is liberating to know that people that love music can also make symphonies possible again. Unfortunately, the symphonic medium has almost disappeared because of a lack of patrons or funding sources. And without private patrons, all that are left are orchestral organizations and their limited resources. That said, most major orchestras don't contribute to the creation of symphonies. Why? Symphonies are expensive in today's economy. So I think in this era, Beethoven may not have written any symphonies whatsoever due to a lack of funding. And if this weren't to be completely true, any symphonies he may have produced on his own wouldn't have been done with the kind of absolute focus required for these masterpieces, I suppose. In other words, imagine Beethoven with a day job... how would this have affected his music? Hard to say. But, I feel that it would have been a factor.
And perhaps, in this era of no financial support for classical music, his symphonies would have never been performed, or only performed long after his death. So yes, I think Beethoven would have been quite interested in Kickstarter. It really is a great way to kickstart the arts and involve passionate people in the creative process. This could be a modern lifeline to the concert hall. And while I am no Beethoven, I am exploring this solution in hopes that I can produce the very best music I can, for we, the living." -Jeremy Soule
"Skywalker is one of the finest recording venues in the world for symphony orchestras. The musicians of the Bay Area are also outstanding. But, the relaxed natural atmosphere is especially inspiring. If you've never been to the Ranch, you have to experience this at least once in your life."- Jeremy Soule
"It is one personalized CD along with two autographed CDs." - Jeremy Soule
"After this Kickstarter campaign, will Jeremy autograph any more Symphony No. 1 CDs? Or, are they finished forever?"
"Once these CDs are gone... they're gone. I won't offer Symphony No. 1 autographed product beyond this campaign. That goes for every reward on the list including the autographed score and Page One manuscript. This is it. Post-Kickstarter, perhaps the only possible way to obtain these items will be in the second-hand market on Ebay. However, these have historically sold for far more than the original cost. And over the years, and as my career progressed, people have found some of my items to be very expensive and hard to find. As an example, the Secret of Evermore OST has sold for hundreds of dollars. None of those carried my autograph. Of course, only time will tell how Symphony No. 1 is ultimately viewed and valued, but this is my first symphony. It is a landmark in my career. So, don't be left out! Be a part of history and donate to receive your autographed CD today! You won't regret it!" - Jeremy Soule
"Yes, of course I will. Between Guild Wars and Skyrim, I have signed my name quite a few times. But at 2,000 units, Symphony No. 1 would be quite rare--even obscure. And even at 25,000 units, Symphony No. 1 would still be considered a very rare autographed CD. What I predict we will ship are very low numbers, my friends. In the music industry, Top Ten singles might move 100,000 units in a single week. It is unlikely the Symphony will be anywhere near these levels. That said, it might take me some time to sign all of these CDs, even at the comparatively low quantities, but I will do it because I love you, my fans. I am dedicated to bringing you a little bit of me with every CD, score or manuscript! Thank you again!" - Jeremy Soule
