A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

HOW IT WORKS
To understand how it works, first identify the direction of the cornering forces. When turning to the left, the torso is pushed sideways to the right by the lateral force vector (red) and resisted by the reaction force vector (black).
The Bolster Boost resists the lateral movement, like the perpendicular sides of a racing seat. In effect, it works quite simply as a wedge, by squeezing your sides and clamping you tightly to the seat.
Setting the distance between the two pads is very intuitive, like adjusting the tension in a bootlace. Once you find the right fit, installation takes only a few seconds.
By simply changing the lace tension, you precisely control
the holding force. Because it’s friction mounted, it is easy to adjust the pad positions while seated. This allows for very subtle modifications to the fit. I like it high and tight for the curves, lower and loose for the straightaways.
The Bolster Boost works for most body types and car seats. Modern car seats fall into three general categories of side bolsters angles:
Wide- trucks, SUVs, minivans, sedans
Medium- sedans, sports cars
Narrow- performance sports cars
We’ve tested the Bolster Boost on several hundred people, of all ages and sizes and the vast majority were able to adjust them to fit perfectly.
However, some men with very wide torsos found it difficult to find a comfortable position. As the torso gets wider, it tends to displace the pads forward. The following animation shows the pad positions with various torso widths on a medium seat.
That being said, the fit is very subjective as one fellow, with a wide torso, reported that he felt very well supported in his BMW Z3 while lapping the high-speed corners of the Fontana raceway.
Tester A: A well-built fireman with a 5.0 Mustang, liked the feeling so much that he did not want to give them back. So we let him keep the prototype. It has been a few years and in his latest email wrote, “I literally use mine every single day. They are still awesome!”
Tester B: “I was able to control the car a lot easier without flopping around…”
Tester C: Has a lot of experience in pushing the limits of grip. He said that when his Cayman began to skid, he could feel the tires start to break loose sooner. Because of this instantaneous feedback, he was able to catch the skid earlier and get his car back under control.
Tester D: Claimed it reduced driving fatigue and helped relive his lower back pain by taking some weight off of the spine.
Tester E: Said he felt more secure napping in airplane seat, less likely to slide into his neighbor.
Many drivers reported the Bolster Boost absolutely improved their lap times. One fellow suggested that it might reduce the injury from a side impact. Several kids remarked it felt like riding in a roller coaster!

Why isn’t it permanently attached to the seat?
In the working position, the pads protrude forward and get in the way of entering and exiting the seat.
What holds it in place?
The outside surface is covered with a special material that grips the seat. Simply leaning back against the pads generates enough friction and locks them into place.
Being friction-mounted, if you lean forward and take your weight off, the pads can slip out of position. In everyday use, this happens very infrequently and it only takes a few seconds to re-position. It’s a tiny inconvenience, but it’s necessary to keep the pads highly adjustable.
What does it feel like?
The Bolster Boost exerts a slight inward squeeze on the sides of your torso, like a gentle hug. The position and force strength is easily adjusted stronger or weaker to suit different moods and roads.
Does it work for all cars?
The Bolster Boost is designed for seats with a 45 degree side bolster, which is on the majority of modern sedans and sports cars.
Some performance sport cars have bolsters with a narrower angle, 65 degrees. We’ve had mixed results, as there are many factors that affect the fit such as depth, curvature and torso size.
Typically, trucks, SUV’s, mini-vans and luxury cars have a more relaxed side bolster angle of 30 degrees, so they are all very compatible. It makes these vehicles feel more like a sports car!
Classic cars usually have seats with a flat back and virtually no side support. So it gives the feeling of a modern seat with 45 degree side bolsters.
Dune buggies, jeeps, go-karts and other open cars are generally well suited for the Bolster Boost. You can use them on boats and airplanes too!
Does it work for everybody?
The Bolster Boost is designed to fit the majority of body types. If you already feel loose in your seat while cornering, the Bolster Boost will work well.
In rare instances, some men with broad chests had some difficulty, as the pads would protrude too far forward. But then again, some other men, well over 250lbs., were able to achieve a comfortable fit. One fellow, with a 44” chest, tested them in his Ferrari and said it felt fantastic!
The feeling is very subjective and people react differently to this new sensation. It has a constant presence, an active squeeze force on a very large and sensitive area.
If you sit very close to the steering wheel so that your elbows and torso touch, you may need to move your elbows slightly out to the side to clear the pads.
Typically, women have a narrower ribcage so the Bolster Boost works great making one-size-fits-all seats fell snug. Kids love them, many saying it feels like being on a roller coaster!
My side bolsters already adjust, why do I need these?
The built-in adjustment mechanism is limited to making a specific spot feel tighter, you cannot raise or lower it. Also, the contact area stays the same. With the Bolster Boost, the side contact area increases significantly and projects forward, better enveloping your torso.
What if I can’t find a comfortable fit?
We want everybody to try it without risk, that’s why we offer a full refund if not totally delighted.
I’m not a “sporty” driver, why should I use them?
The Bolster Boost makes driving more stimulating, engaging, more fun! You become more alert, sensitive and a better driver. By supporting your sides, it can help reduce pressure on your lower back.
Why is it so expensive?
We feel very strongly about manufacturing here in the USA. We believe that our customers agree and are willing to support rebuilding America’s economy by the creation of new jobs.
We want to make the highest quality product with the best materials and workmanship. It is built to be tough enough to provide many years of daily use. The slight cost reduction in manufacturing overseas is not worth the many risks. I’ve talked to other makers and heard more than a few terrifying stories of poor quality and unauthorized material substitutions that crippled and almost destroyed their companies.
Consider the value. It can cost hundreds of dollars in upgrades just to get a 10% boost in your car’s performance, in your driving sensations. If you could double or triple your feedback, what’s that worth?
Risks and challenges
As with any new product, issues will occur and lessons learned in the making of the first parts. We are very confident that we will work through whatever problems arise. Our manufacturing partner has many years of experience fabricating complicated aerospace and medical parts. At my day job, I spend most of my time solving the many problems that occur in making airplane parts to very strict specifications and dimensions.
