About this project
" ...improving upon this popular building block system seem to be a very difficult task. However, Berlin-based product designer Daniel Stead may have done just that with the Lini Cube…"– Dorothy Tan, DesignTAXI
Lini cube SHADES
Most Versatile Building Block
Today we proudly introduce SHADES! With shades we created a unique color concept of 6 colors that come in three shades each. A total of 18 colors that match with any other of those 18 colors. Shades was created to help children develop a taste for matching colors.
Last year we introduced the revolutionary Lini cube on Kickstarter. If you missed it, you should watch our short demo on the Lini cube features at www.lini.me. It only came in one color: The limited edition red. We believe colors matter big time, so today we want to focus on colors.

9. RISKS AND CHALLENGES
The toy industry just don't get it. Instead of educating children in colors, they treat colors as a bait on children. They know children like colors so they throw colors at their toys. Some of the wealthier companies even pay tons of money to analyze children's play behavior and color choices. They bring them to a big room with toys and have cameras record every movement. As a result a magical color is chosen that children supposedly can't resist.
We put everything we knew about colors aside and started from scratch. We asked ourself one simple question:
What is the biggest challenge people have when it comes to colors? To make it easy we wanted to condense the answer into one simple word. The word we came up with was TASTE.
If you only have one color no taste is necessary. It’s just one color. Either you like it or not. As soon another color comes into play, taste is the essence to make them match. Why is it for many people (myself included) still hard to match colors? We never learned it! We believe developing taste for colors is something you can learn like e.g. music. Be it singing or playing an instrument. Some people are naturals others have to put effort into it. Either way, a key in developing an understanding and a good feel about music is to be exposed to it in an early age.
We believe the same is true for colors. But how can you develop a taste for colors if as a child you are only confronted with the basic colors red, green, blue, yellow. And if more colors are offered they rarely match.
Instead of introducing the standard four colors and please the regular customer, we did what we thought was right and introduce 18 colors right from the start.
One important methods in matching colors is using shades. Just with various shades of one color you already can create beautiful things. So the matrix consists of 6 basic colors with each 3 matching shades. Have your child distinguish between lemon yellow and yellow ocher. The challenge was not to only match the shades but any color within the 18. How we did it is a little secret but it is amazing how it works. Our promise is that if you pick blindly in a jar with those 18 colors any two colors you pick will match.
We created something where no taste is necessary. They will match by nature. How do you learn to match colors if they all do? The answer goes back to the example with music. By exposing children to harmonizing colors a taste develops.
3. LAUNCH / PRICE
If it comes to pricing or price expectations, it boils down to the industry you're in.
Even so it is totally unreasonable to pay $100 for a little bottle of perfume that literally evaporates, it's common and widely excepted. However you could never imagine paying that much for a cup of coffee even so the cost to make are roughly the same.
The food industry is expected to be cheap and the cosmetic industry ok to be pricey.
Instead of trying to see how Lini cube fits in what industry and trying to meet expectations, we decided to follow a simple principle.
We want to sell it for what it is, but we also want people to buy it for what it is: An amazing, high quality, award-winning, most versatile, designer construction toy that triggers your imagination and creativity. It’s an once in a lifetime investment that you can even pass on to the next generations. In the age of throwaway society and one way products it is hard to find products where this applies to. It will be one of the few toys you will not buy and get bored after an one time play. It is something that you even as a grown up want to have on your desk to relax your mind whenever it’s necessary.
We want to position ourself as an innovative design company rather than a toy company aiming for the mass market.
The price reflects, that we don’t want to flood the market with Lini cubes but rather keep it special and exclusive.
4. COPY PROTECTION
There is a lot of care we put into this product. In order to protect our customers and ourselves from counterfeit products we integrated a sophisticated invisible plagiarism protection right into the material.
