DON BUGITO: Prehispanic Snackeria
No, you’re not buggin’…yet. Don Bugito offers edible (yes, edible) insects, inspired by pre-Hispanic and contemporary Mexican cuisine. Insects are a valuable source of protein in many cultures throughout the world, and we feel like the US is finally ready to try these tasty critters, through food that is as delicious as it is innovative. Don Bugito uses locally sourced ingredients (including the insects) and fresh flavors to create amazing dishes that simply happen to have an unexpected ingredient. For those of you interested to know, insects not only offer an insanely high source of protein, but also come from production methods that are more ecologically-friendly than many other food sources. For the rest of you, we just make great food!
Don Bugito has been serving up edible insects since the 2011 San Francisco Street Food, where our product was a hit! Now, we feel like the rest of San Francisco is ready to eat insects throughout the year. Our goal is to raise funds in order to fabricate a food cart and serve our food to adventurous San Franciscans on a regular basis, and slowly spread the word about this unconventional food.
Buggin’ yet? We hope so. You can help us spread the word and flavors of pre-Hispanic Mexican Cuisine, edible insects and our delicious new food business throughout the San Francisco-Bay Area and through the United States. You generosity will be rewarded, with bugs, yes, but mostly by being part of a great food movement!
Don Bugito, owned by Monica Martinez, is one of the businesses from La Cocina, a great non-profit kitchen incubator for woman entrepreneurs in the Mission District. They believe in us! So we hope you believe in Don Bugito and in the future of edible insects, too. We will always love you for this! Thank you so much.
