Satanic Panic is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the fictional 1970’s and 1980’s where players take on the role of secret government agents tasked with combating the evils of tabletop. The players work as a team with the common purpose to contain, control, and eliminate the threats to our world. They must do all this while keeping the truth from the public, lest a panic ensue.
The game will be a 200-page hardcover book with everything needed for a GM and 2-6 players. It is designed so that the game can be played as a traditional RPG campaign or can be played in an episodic fashion with different numbers and arrangements of players. Satanic Panic brings modern game design principles to traditional tabletop game play. It gives the players all the power they need to fight against the forces of evil while making their every decision have long term consequences.

Satanic Panic is produced by Third Act Publishing, the game design company that has brought you Reflections: The game of Dueling Samurai, The Tearable RPG, and Tiny Guardian. This team combines decades of game design and RPG experience, with the knowledge of already running a very successful Kickstarter. Each member of the team brings their own expertise to the project to help make this game the best it can be.
Known for his podcast Talking TableTop, Jim is well recognized for being a vocal proponent of RPG as ‘the highest form of art known to mankind’. Jim is the co-founder of Third Act Publishing, a game development company that highlights the potential of RPGs as a medium for storytelling. Of all the games Jim has designed, Satanic Panic is the project he is most excited about.
Jim Merritt is the other co-founder of Third Act Publishing. Jim (as opposed to GM Jim) has a background in graphic design, web design, web development, illustration and content creation. He really enjoys the potential for systems and experiences allowed through game play. Jim jumped into the design of Satanic Panic with both feet and has brought his unique design sensibilities to this project.
Full Time Bookseller, Part Time Belly Dancer, not often enough fighter for justice! When she is not performing, cosplaying, or gaming she enjoys writing, crafting, and painting. She is a recovering bookaholic, and a 2nd degree black belt in Kung Fu. Emily is a writer, play tester, designer on Satanic Panic.
Satanic Panic is a game that is based entirely on its own system. The mechanics are designed to encourage a play style where the players balance the use of force with the risk of causing collateral damage or spreading panic among the local community. They have all the power to handle the threats in front of them, but must decide how much force to apply in any given situation.
The core mechanic of the game is a four point feedback loop as shown below.
Complete Missions Using Equipment
Agents are equipped with the latest and greatest gear to complete their missions. When they use this gear to contain, control, and eliminate tabletop the players will choose how many dice they want to roll (based on the gear they are using). However if the players decide be reckless with their power it will cause problems later.
Collateral damage is the result of the players using too much force, and rolling too high, on their actions. Agents are judged on the amount of control while in the field.Collateral damage is tallied up at the end of every mission and will result in either a god or a bad performance review.
The team budget is the pool of money the players use to requisition supplies for their missions. The budget will increase and decrease based on the amount of collateral damage the team inflicts on missions. If the team is successful and avoids collateral damage, the budget will increase, otherwise they will see a dip in their funds.
There is a massive stock pile of weapons and gear the government has set aside for teams to use on their missions. Based on the teams budget they can requisition this gear to help them defeat tabletop. The bigger the budget, the better the gear that can be requisitioned.
You can start playing right away! All backers get immediate access to the play test packet and you can start running your own games today. While we feel that the rules are near completion, there are still aspects of the game that are being tweaked. The packet reflects the current rules of the game as shaped from the last six months of play testing.

The government has secret laws passed to allow their agents to carry out missions with impunity. At this level we will include these secret laws in the game book.

At this level we will be able to take Satanic Panic from black and white interior pages to a full color book to show off all the glorious artwork.
(Achieved!!!) $25,000 Stretch Goal
When we reach this goal we can upgrade the quality of the book, taking it from a standard grade hardcover to a premium level book in our print run.
(Achieved!!!) $30,000 Stretch Goal
If we hit this level we will include a sample mission for players to run in Satanic Panic. This mission will be included in all PDF and physical copies of the game.
$40,000 Stretch Goal
At this level we will be able to increase our art budget and add additional full color art to the book.
$50,000 Stretch Goal
If we hit this mark Jim McClure will write a full mini-campaign that all backers will get as a separate PDF file. This campaign will be a series of connected missions and include some unique enemies and gear.
$60,000 Stretch Goal
At this level we will add to the writing staff by bringing in additional paid contributing writers.
$80,000 Stretch Goal
At this level we will produce a PDF for all backers that includes printable maps that you can use for your Satanic Panic game.
$100,000 Stretch Goal
This is the final level. At this point we will increase the page count of the book and add additional equipment, enemies, skills and player aids to enhance the experience of Satanic Panic!

The Government Blacklist is a list of known tabletoppers that are still on the loose. This Blacklist will be published in the core rule book of Satanic Panic so that future field agents will know who to be on the lookout for.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges stem from this game being a large scale project for Third Act Publishing. We are publishing a full-size, hardcover RPG book utilizing an overseas print run to accommodate the number and type of books we are making.
We have assembled a team of experienced people to handle this project, and budgeted accordingly, but there are plenty of aspects that are new to us.
