What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

History is in the making! Living Earth Structures has partnered up with the Solar Living Institute in Hopland to build a structure built out of pallets, insulated with straw, and covered in an earthen, cob mixture. We are working with an engineer and architect now to have the structure built to code, which will then be submitted to the building department. This will be the first structure of its kind ever to be permitted which will set a precedent for other structures such as this to be built very affordable using all recycled materials. We plan to start building in August, and to be completed by October.

Risks and challenges

This is the first time a structure such as this has ever been presented to the building delpartment to have permitted. The engineer and architect are certain it will be approved because it passes all the insulation requirements, structural strength, and fire resiliency tests.
