As we are moving toward a digital world, where written words are read on electronic devices rather than paper, printed books are slowly becoming artifacts of the past. To preserve the heritage that some of our major authors have left us, it is essential to document every step of the path that lead them to their literary recognition.
This project is about the books published by Philip K. Dick (1928-1982), the famous science fiction writer, a preeminent English language writer and visionary of the late 20th century. Before reaching literary recognition, decades after his death, he has published dozens of novels in hundreds of editions, each with a unique and original cover artwork.
Philip K. Dick is also of Hollywood fame since a dozen of his stories have been turned into movies, such a the influential Blade Runner (1982), Minority Report (2002), A Scanner Darkly (2006), and more recently Adjustment Bureau (2011).
In this bibliographic project we will reference each of the more than 600 editions of his books published between 1955 and 2012 in the USA and UK. A color picture of each of the books referenced will be shown.
The bibliography will include detailed historical information on PKD books, essays on collecting books, a useful guide to rare editions, as well as glossary of bibliographic terms.
Format will be 6”X 9”, approx 150 pages, with more than 600 color images. We will offer two editions: A high-quality limited edition in boards and dust jacket and a trade format edition in perfect bound wrappers.
The hardcover edition will be limited to 100 copies and the trade paperback available on demand.
eBooks editions will follow.
Current Status of the project
- Detailed bibliographic information for each book and the book cover images have been collected.
- We have created a template for laying out the book content.
- We are now moving to the production stage.
How Will We Do It
The book will be produced using the Adobe Creative suite. Funds will be used to pay for the use of the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, inDesign), for design work, to secure the rights for some of the images used, for copy editing costs as well as publishing and advertisement costs.
