We shot ROVER over the course of 15 days in November, 2012, thanks to the sacrifice of crewmembers working for almost nothing and rental houses willing to practically hand us equipment. But we need your help to finish the film.

Your contributions will go towards post-production expenses such as:

- Color Correction

- Sound Design

- Visual Effects

- Music Licenses

With your help, we can make ROVER festival-ready and bring it to a theater near you.

LOGLINE:

A hapless cult leader losing control of his flock fakes a prophecy instructing them to make a movie in hopes of bringing them together. There's just one problem: they don't know the first thing about film production.

SYNOPSIS:

The Church - Rover Headquarters
The Church - Rover Headquarters

In their dilapidated church headquarters, a greatly diminished and
dispirited cult awaits the sign to off themselves.  Their hapless
leader, DAVE, concocts a plan: to quell infighting and give them
purpose in life before their deaths, he fakes a prophecy instructing
them to make a movie and share their story with the world. There’s
just one problem: they don’t know the first thing about film
production.

To realize Dave’s (faked) vision, they enlist the aid of an intern at
a New York production company. MARK’s professional life is not what he thought it would be. His internship – reading awful scripts – doesn’t
pay, and his side project – working freelance music video production –
is equally unfulfilling. He wants to be a director, and a Craigslist
post offers him a shortcut.

He signs on for a “Cult Classic Sci-Fi Masterpiece” and, after his few
questions are met with strange answers, he stops asking them. In this
group of cult-members-turned-amateur-filmmakers, he finds a dedication and passion that’s lacking in his more conventional career path; in the goal of telling their story, the disparate and disillusioned cult members find a uniting purpose. The aloof JIMMY becomes an engaged Director of Photography, LARRY and SUZY’s non-communicative marriage is repaired as they portray the cult leaders and life-partners, Randall and Deena, on screen, and DAVE becomes the respected leader he was meant to be as the deft Producer of the film.

But just as they hit their stride, Dave receives a true prophecy. It’s
time for them to “exit.”

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:

Writer/Director Tony Blahd
Writer/Director Tony Blahd

I am Tony Blahd, writer and director of the movie Rover. This is my director's statement: Rover is a film about faith, hope, destiny, relationships, feelings, and other really important things. It is also about space aliens. But not scary space aliens like the ones from the movie Independence Day, and also not needy, kind-of-annoying aliens like  the ones from the movie E.T. These aliens are fun, the kind of aliens you could spend an afternoon chatting with at a backyard barbecue and not feel like you had any obligation to exchange emails or stay in touch afterwards if you didn't want to. Just fun, conversational Aliens, that would really appreciate if you support this movie.

PRODUCER'S STATEMENT:

Tony and I met for coffee in February around the corner from "the church" I'd heard so much about.

Tony had come across a 19th Century church and parochial school that were recently bought by a developer who had designs to turn them into apartment buildings, and Tony arranged to lease the church from the developers while they waited for plans and permits to clear

When Tony and his friends took control of the church in February of 2012, the place was a shithole--little schooldesks strewn about, piles and piles of mildewed bibles.

But in just a few months, they had cleaned it up and were holding art events, throwing parties, and renting out old classrooms in the parochial school as artist studios.

By August, there was enough money to hustle together a movie and enough of a reason to rush -- there were rumors that the plans would go through and they'd lose the church on December 1.

Three months to write a script, get a crew, and make a movie.

What kind of story can you tell for $50,000 in a broken down Bushwick church?

With your help (and a little more money), ROVER.

Risks and challenges

We faced a lot of challenges during production:
- Hurricane Sandy
- Nor-easter
- No heat
- Plumbing rigged together with garden hoses

But we made it.

Unfortunately, the challenges that lie ahead cannot be overcome by layering ROVER scarves and lowering your hygienic standards.

Post-production is expensive
- Color Correction
- Sound Design
- Visual Effects
- Music Licenses

But with the same hustle and dedication that enabled us to shoot ROVER, we can finish it -- with your help.
