The Project: A Non-traditional Gardening Book
I'm writing a book about gardening. Actually, I'm assisting over a hundred people throughout Maine write a non-traditional gardening book. Most gardening books focus on the expertise of one person, but each gardener faces a different set of challenges and delights. I wanted to write a book that would showcase that variety. This book is a compilation of the fascinating knowledge gathered from the folks who do their own gardening and really put their hands in the dirt. Not only is buying local and eating local increasingly recognized as important, but learning local applies when it comes to gardening. This book is social networking at its best.
To get the information for this book, I reached out to the Maine gardening community. I sent surveys to people throughout the state who had responded to press releases and articles about my interest in getting information from passionate gardeners. While not scientific in any way, the twelve-page survey was extensive. Respondents told me about the plants they grew - trees, shrubs, perennials and more; they revealed where they purchased garden-related products; they talked about their gardens and the special public and private gardens that must be seen; they told me about their garden pests and how they deal with them; they listed the books, magazines, blogs, and websites they go to for information; they shared their tips and techniques. They were enthusiastic and they were passionate. Most of all, they were delighted to be able to tell someone about their hard-earned strategies for success. Typical comments included, "I love gardening so much, I swear I can smell the flowers right through the catalog pages." "I've been waiting to tell someone this stuff for years!"
Putting it all together.
I spent about a year compiling the information from the surveys in databases, verifying it, checking taxonomic names, getting contact information and taking photos. I wanted to make sure that the book was accurate as well as beautiful.
I'm now in the process of working with a book designer. I know that I need the right look that reflects the quality of the content inside. Great photographs accompany the fabulous pearls of wisdom shared by the contributors. The book is written in a folksy, down-to-earth style with respondents quoted throughout. The focus of the book is ornamental gardening. A complete list of the participating gardeners will be listed in the back of the book. Take a look at my website and read a little about the book. www.mainegardenjournal.com
You'll see what a good-looking book it will be!
So far, I've covered the cost of having the book edited and designed. I've put my heart and soul into making this book express the voice of experienced gardeners throughout this big state.
This Kickstart is specifically to assist me in getting the book printed. In order to price the book competitively, economies of scale indicate that I should invest in having many books printed. My goal is to print 3,000 books.
If my project is funded, you will get to come along for the ride. You’ll get to see regular updates from me about how things are coming along. You’ll get to see first-hand what this writing adventure has been about, albeit a non-traditional one. You'll be a part of the reason this book is a success.
Check out the right side of this page for a list of the rewards I’m offering in return for pledges. Of course one of the best rewards is the fantastic book itself - The Maine Garden Journal. In addition, there are some garden-related gifts that I've designed and they're only available here. In order to make this funding come true, I need to raise at least $10,000 by the middle of March. In true Kickstarter style, if I don't reach my goal, I get nothing at all. And, if I exceed my goal, that means many more people will be getting fabulous rewards. We all win.
The End Goal is to have my book printed and in the hands of all the survey respondents by the end of May at a Grand Unveiling Book Release Party.
I hope to see many of you there as well!
Thank you in advance for your support.
