Where do you look for inspiration? Do young people look to adult role models for guidance and insight? Or is it the other way around?
Each year, for the last 50 years, both have been happening at The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) and its affiliated conferences around the world.
To share this inspiration with everyone, we are producing a ±200-page hardcover book to celebrate THIMUN's 50th Anniversary, commemorating the development of the conference, and the inspiring stories of its participants. For over half a century, THIMUN has welcomed students and teachers from all over the world, and have changed every one of their lives.
This book will be full of inspiring articles, photos and stories about the conference and the lives of its participants. This is your chance to gain inspiration for your own life and career from almost 50 years of Inspiring Youth.
Many participants have based their careers and successes on the experiences at THIMUN. Half a century of influence has led to some amazing and inspiring stories! These stories deserve to be told. What better way to tell such stories, than in a unique, hardcover book.
We don't just want to look back. The stories of this book will be an inspiration to many young generations to come, so you can be inspired too, and help Shaping Tomorrow. Even (or maybe especially) if you no longer consider yourself young, you can still be inspired by the youth, as former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said at the THIMUN 2002 Conference: "It is from the young that we should draw our energy and inspiration."
About the Book
We designed the book to be easy-to-read and timeless; ready to be picked up and read at any time. The articles are stand-alone stories that can be read separately, while accompanying texts tell the history of THIMUN, giving context to these stories.
Full-colour recent photos printed on glossy paper are intermixed with photos going as far back as the first conference in 1969.
Newspaper articles from Dutch, German, Japanese and other newspapers, as well as articles written by participants at the conference, are printed on thin, newspaper-like paper.
Personalise Your Copy
There is a section in the book you can personalise with your own experiences. For those attending a conference, you can put your own memories down, and for those that attended in the past, you can reflect on that past.
All this is bound in a ±200-page hardcover manageable sized coffee-table style book.
About the Content
Over the last 50 years, THIMUN has created thousands of stories. We have attempted to select more than 50 of these stories to share with you. The stories have been selected to show the full spectrum of THIMUN’s past, spanning multiple years, multiple nationalities and various different careers.
We have received photos and articles from all over the world, and are including as many as we can in the book.
The book will also contain some statistics and figures showing the growth and composition of the conference.
About the Team
David L Williams
David became involved in the Model United Nations as a teacher at the German International School of The Hague in 1977. Inspired by his own students to continue the involvement, in 1981 he became one of the founding members of the THIMUN Foundation which now runs the most prestigious MUN conference for high school students in the world.
Under his leadership, the annual THIMUN conference grew in size from 1,000 participants in 1981 to over 3,500 in 2004, the year he retired from the Chairmanship of the THIMUN Foundation.
David always enjoyed working closely with his students. He has trained many hundreds of MUN delegates and has attended and accompanied students to conferences in Belgium, China, Egypt, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the USA.
Reinhardt participated in his first Model United Nations conference as a delegate in 1999. After holding positions as Action Paper Coordinator and President of the Environment Commission, Reinhardt went on to represent the THIMUN Youth Network (TYN) at a number of International UN conferences. He was one of the founding members of the TYN, and conference manager for the THIMUN Conference.
After his MUN experiences, Reinhardt has been involved in many industries in communication and project management positions but has always had a connection to the youth and development. Reinhardt’s unique background and experience made him ideal to manage this project.
Joris is a graphic designer by trade. He is based in the Netherlands but has extensive design experience in New Zealand. Joris has worked on many books in various sectors.
In addition to winning the Best Dutch Book Design award in 2010 and a bronze medal of the World's’ most beautiful books, he has worked on various other award-winning books in his career. Joris is conceptually strong and ensures that the design of the book matches the goals and content. A design where every detail counts and one that invites readers and inspires them.
Risks and challenges
The publishing date of this book is very strict, as it will be ready for the THIMUN 2018 conference in January 2018. Though the date of publishing is fixed, unforeseen delays can always occur with the printing of the book.
Though the book will be published even if the campaign fails, the campaign will help ensure that the book is of the quality and print run desired by the authors. This campaign will help ensure that the book is made available to as large an audience as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
