Three Dimensional Hex or Square Terrain Tiles- Made of Wood!
Stackable Hexes or squares for your 3-D gaming experience. Scalable to any size gaming platform and adaptable to any gaming need!
This is my project to make terrain pieces for gaming. There are quite a few prefabricated terrain systems out there. They have pieces like floors, stairs, walls, towers, et cetera. Pieces that can only be used for one thing. Those systems are good, but I have the idea to create a terrain piece based on a smaller, discrete piece. Something that could be combined together to form any kind of feature on a map. The basic unit on a map is the single hex or square. My idea is to create stackable hex or square pieces. These pieces will have a raised piece on the top and a hole in the bottom to make them stackable.
This will make the pieces both stackable and stable.
You can use as many pieces as you want, stack them as high as you want, and they'll stay where you put them. They can easily handle the bumping and jostling that comes with a regular gaming session.
You can us them to create highlands and lowlands on your maps, to create the walls and rooms of a castle, or make barricades. Stack them as high as you like and fight it out on a mountain, or spread them out on your map to create cover for ranged units.
Instead of prefabricated pieces that can only be put together a few ways, I wanted to create a smaller, discrete piece that could be used for any purpose.
This is a big reason I wanted to make them out of wood. With a milling machine, I can create stackable hex or square terrain pieces in any scale, at any height, starting at 1/2 inch thick. Doing the same thing in plastic would be far more difficult.
I can make stackable pieces in any scale you desire.
Wood is very versatile. Any coloring agent will work on wood. Any paint, even sharpies and Crayola markers. I know. I've done it. They can be temporarily or permanently glued together to make large clusters for faster set up of your maps. This gives you amazing versatility for customizing the pieces the way you want them.
The whole idea is to give you the ability to set up your maps the way you want, in the scale you want.
I also have a number of ideas in the works that go along with the stackable pieces. The first are the flat pieces you see in the video. Those are 1/8 inch thick baltic birch pieces. Those can be cut in hex or square, and can be made to fit any scale. There are also bridge pieces:
These are also scalable to any size, and can be made as long as needed. You can use them to create underpasses or overpasses, or use them for doorways or gates.
These can be used for marking cities or landmarks in large scale maps. These pieces can also be scaled to any size.
I am making prototypes for all of them at the moment, and all of them can be included as stretch goals later in the campaign.
If you're with me so far, you're probably wondering what your pledges will go to. I am looking to purchase a small milling machine, along with appropriate tooling and clamping for this project. I will also need a sanding machine. I will need some various hand tools and measuring equipment as well. Along with the tools, I will purchase the lumber I will make the pieces out of.

Risks and challenges
I have 16 years of experience as a woodworker. I have 5 years experience working with milling machines. I have 27 years of experience as a gamer. All of this experience works together to lend me the ability to pull off this project. The biggest challenge I foresee is the clamps I need to secure the wood in the milling machine. I will have to have these fabricated specially for this project. I already have ideas for what I need, and there are local places which can do the fabrication for me. In a real pinch, I can even make them myself, but it will cost me the time to make them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
