About this project
This project started to unfold in the fall of 2012 when three friends began meeting regularly in a coffee shop to brainstorm ideas for games. The group’s artist, Galen Nicole, had been toying with some ideas for a deck of playing cards when she revealed her latest sketch. That sketch became known as the Rogue Queen.
However early on during the creation of the deck Galen received a rare diagnosis that would change her life. Shocked and uncertain about her future she remained focused and continued drawing and working on the designs for the deck.
It was her intention with the help of her friends to transform the Rogue Queen art into a custom deck of playing cards and launch it on Kickstarter.
After Galen’s passing in the spring of 2014 her family and friends committed to follow through with her dream working together to launch the Rogue Queen.
We know that she, like us, would love nothing more than to share her passion with you. And now here it is, for your card-playing pleasure.
THE ROGUE QUEEN "GENESIS" DECK
The Rogue Queen "Genesis" custom deck of playing cards will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC). There will be 56 cards total (52 deck cards, 2 Jokers, and 2 novelty) printed with a linen finish.
The Card Back
"If there's delight in love, 'tis when I see that heart, which others bleed for, bleed for me."
Disguised as a glow around the globe held by the Joker are the Shakespearean words: "Oh what a Tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive"

About the Artist Galen Nicole
The designs for the Rogue Queen deck, unlike some of her early work, showed a different side of her talents. During this particular time her art seemed to travel directly from her heart to her hand. Those close to her were able to see firsthand the transformative and healing power of artistic expression. This piece taken from an unpublished blog she wrote potently describes how she felt about it:
“Art had been a hobby in the past, and sometimes an outlet. Now it was THE outlet and on days I was afraid that I might be leaving this world soon, I felt like the act of drawing was burning my soul onto paper. I made that project my purpose and I wanted to stay in the world to see it through, and play cards with my friends using the deck we had created.”
Heart, creativity, passion, spirit—Galen had all of these in spades. From day one on this project, her enthusiasm was infectious.
Custom Wood Boxes
There are three custom handcrafted wooden boxes made from black walnut and curly maple wood. Each box holds two decks of cards. They are available to backers at the $200 and $250 pledge levels.
In addition to the pledge rewards listed on the right side of the Kickstarter page backers can also add the following items. Note prices include shipping.
- Deck of Rogue Queen playing card $11 US $20 Int'l
- Rogue Queen "Live Now" T-shirt $25 US $45 Int'l
- Poster 12" x 18" unframed $20 US $40 Int'l

Once you’ve made your initial reward selection from the right side of the Kickstarter page and you’d like to include an add-on reward, you can adjust the total price of your reward at the “Back the Project” page to include the add-on reward amount. Or if you decide you want to select an Add-On reward later you can change your pledge any time just prior to the project end date by selecting “Manage Your Pledge.” (See video below)
A Kickstarter survey will be sent out to you as a backer after the funding period ends, allowing you to confirm your order.
Reminder: You are only charged IF the project meets its funding goal, at the end of the project funding period. If the project is not funded, you will not be charged.

How to Manage Your Pledge
We will offer stretch goals as we approach and meet our funding goal.
The first stretch goal will be a custom seal on every tuck box of the Rogue Queen "Genesis" deck if we reach $10,000 in funding.
Thank You to our Backers!!!!!
With your support we have the potential to fund this project and provide our backers with a unique deck of custom playing cards. And you’ll also be helping us realize the dream of the creative artist behind the Rogue Queen Studios.
You can also help us reach our goal by sharing this project with your friends through Facebook, and Twitter.
Because the minimum order quantity for a production run with the United States Playing Card Company is quite high (2500 decks to be exact), it is our intention to give a portion of the remaining decks from this project after backer orders are filled to organizations with programs that provide support to Young Adults facing a life-altering diagnosis of their own, like that of our young artist.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the Rogue Queen!
Special Thanks to Deborah Perdue at Illumination Graphics and Bobby Simons at Spring Life Productions for helping guide us in the making of this video. And to Dustin Way at the Rogue Valley Roasting Company for graciously letting us record our video after hours in the coffee shop where it all began!
Risks and challenges
Even the best-laid plans can give way to unexpected hiccups and delays so we’ve made allowances within the schedule just in case. The decks will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC), known for their reliability, experience and quality. All of the artwork is complete and we’ve been working closely with the company to ensure everything is in order and ready for production.
We understand from other Kickstarter projects that the Fulfillment process can be the most challenging part of the project. Among us we have over forty years of order-processing and fulfillment experience and we aren’t shy when it comes to calling in extra troupes and resources if needed. Making sure that we have accurate shipping data on backer surveys will allow us to get the cards into the hands of backers as quickly as possible.
Above all keeping the backers informed of our progress along the way will be a priority for us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
