What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

My name is Amy and this is Girl Represent. I am a grad student, UX designer, and poet trying to figure out a way to change the status quo when it comes to women in politics. Basically there aren't enough women in general, but there really aren't enough women of color

Are you ready for change? Join me!

This campaign is to fund the development of a workbook designed to empower Asian American, African American, Native American, Latina, and multiracial girls to become civically involved in their community.

To refine the workbook I want to take it on tour this summer and hold workshops that will bring girls and women already in politics together to walk through the exercises.

Here is where you come in:

This summer I want to take the workbook and workshop on tour and talk to as many women and girls as possible about girl power and how we can work together to make a difference.

I have the first workshop and some great partners lined up for Nashville, TN on June 3rd, but depending on funding I can do more:

$1,500 - COMPLETE! - Covers the Nashville workshop and limited first run of Girl Represent Workbooks

$3,000 - COMPLETE! - Covers two workshops and more workbooks

$6,000 - Covers four workshops and more workbooks!

Through the workshops I will test and tweak the workbook. At the end of the summer I will print a final version of the workbook to share with my backers (and the world?)!

Ok, let's get into the details.

The workbook will provide girls with tools to:

  • Identify problems opportunities in their communities they can design for
  • Identify strengths that they bring to the table
  • Define what makes a good leader (and how they can be one)
  • Define their support network
  • Define tangible ways they can make a difference
  • Articulate what they learned

Using design-based frameworks, the workbooks are designed to for groups of at least two. They could be used to facilitate conversations between mothers and daughters, teachers and students, or in workshop settings.

After the summer workshops I will finalize the workbook.

During half-day workshops, girls will be paired with women who are involved in local politics or civic leadership. Together they will share their experiences and come up with ideas around closing the gender and color gap and driving impact in their communities.

The workshop will follow a structure like this:

20 Min Warm Up

10 Min Introductions

30 Min Partner Sessions

30 Min Q&A w/ women in politics

20 Min Breakout Activity

30 Min Action Sessions

20 Min Presentations

20 Min Debrief

The first workshop will be in Nashville, TN on June 3rd at the Oasis Center. I have partnered with some amazing local youth organizations (listed below) to host and promote the workshop

Nashville Partners:

After participating in the workshops girls will have a better understanding of how they can impact their communities and connections with female role models who are already involved in politics. The women who participate will have insights into what is important to their constituents and an inspiring reminder of why they got involved in politics in the first place.

The first stop on the tour, Nashville, is booked but with your help it can be just the first of many cities to host a Girl Represent Workshop. I would love to add additional cities to engage with women and girls around the country. Please back me or share this link if you want to see this happen too.

For each workshop I will need:

  • A Venue
  • Promotional Partners
  • Connections to Students
  • 3-5 women of color who are already involved in politics
  • Snacks (Yes, this is important!)
  • Printed Workbooks
  • A way to get there and a place to stay

All of these things take time and most of them take money. That's where YOU come in!

I have set the goal for this campaign at $1,500. This will help me print the first versions of the workbook, cover labor and supplies for the first workshop in Nashville, and do a limited first run printing of the final workbook for backers. But I don't want to stop there.

Here is what I can do with on your help:

$1,500 -  Covers the Nashville workshop, travel, and limited first run of Girl Represent Workbooks

$3,000 -  Covers two workshops and more workbooks

Potential cities:

- New York, NY

- Washington, DC

$6,000 - Covers four workshops!

Potential cities:

- Seattle, WA

- Denver, CO

In addition to that great feeling that you are helping change the world for the better, I am also offering some fun rewards for backers. They are outlined in greater detail on the right, but here is a list of some ways you can be involved:

  • Get credited as a backer in the workbook
  • Get access to the Girl Represent playlist
  • Get a custom designed sticker to show your support
  • Get a post card from a workshop city
  • Get a dedicated workbook for a girl you want to encourage
  • Attend a private digital hangout with me and at least one thought leader in the space as we share our experiences and what we are working on
  • Brainstorm party with yours truly to develop ideas on how to engage young women and women of color in politics
  • Get project updates in your inbox
  • Get video thank yous form a workshop
  • Bring a workshop to your city

Rewards and ways to get involved may change throughout the campaign as I continue to think of ways people can be involved!

The goal of Girl Represent is to empower Asian American, African American, Native American, Latina, and multiracial girls to view themselves as change makers by helping them identify ways they can impact their community and connecting them with women of color in politics.

We can make a difference. This past November the number of women of color in the Senate quadrupled (to four) and there are 34 in the House, yet women of color still only constitute 7.1% of the 115th Congress. If you look at local politics the numbers are even worse. In state governments they make up only 5.9% of representatives.

While representation has gotten better in recent years, we still don’t do a very good job of showing girls, especially girls of color, that it is possible for them to achieve these offices. Seeing someone who looks like you in office making an impact helps you believe that you can do it too. That is what I am hoping to inspire for the next generation. I hope you will join me for the journey.

When I was in high school, I was asked to write an essay about a leader who inspired me and I decided I wanted to write about an Asian American politician. Unfortunately, at the time there were very few that I could find and none of them were women. This subconsciously reinforced that there wasn't a place for me at the table.

Even though I don't have a personal background in politics, I believe that I can play a unique role as a designer. While living in Nashville I spent six years working with middle and high school students helping them develop literacy and public speaking skills. Through that process I learned how to work with students and organize events. In August of 2016 I moved to New York City to pursue a Masters in Interaction Design at the School of visual arts.

I can’t do this alone and I would love to have you join me on this journey. If you are passionate about better representation and want to empower girls of color, please back this campaign and share the link with as many people as you feel is socially acceptable.

Risks and challenges

I already have the Nashville workshop in a good place, so the lowest level of funding is pretty low risk. The biggest risk involved in this campaign is that I my venue would fall through or find the women that I need in order to make the workshops a success. I am confident that I could find another venue and alter the workshop so that it would still be valuable.

For future workshops I am hoping to partner with local organizations who can host the events at a low cost (or for free). In the case that I have a hard time recruiting women, I will modify the curriculum to focus more on the girls generating ideas and less on individual interactions with the mentors.
