The Standard is Perfectly Clear
The finesse and character of mixing cocktails doesn't end at the pour. Home and professional bartenders alike know the art extends to the glass, the garnish, and often overlooked, the ice. Too frequently, beautiful drinks are muddied with cloudy industrial ice crashing into the glass, diminishing the artisanal experience otherwise crafted so carefully.
You deserve better. Your guests deserve better. For the host who demands the absolute finest presentation, Shard brings the art of handcrafted clear ice from the local speakeasy into your home.
As Seen On
How It Works
Produce a clear ice block in a regular freezer using the Shard. Directional freezing pushes impurities to the bottom of the ice, leaving most of it crystal clear.
Engage guests in the cocktail process with your unique style of cutting the ice. Chip, chisel, and sculpt the ice block into one of a kind shards using the included ice pick, 6-point ice prong or another tool of choice. Select an open setting for curious eyes to marvel at the skill of a new craft.
Let your guests imbibe with their eyes first. Adorn drinks with your ice creations for excellence in every glass. Nothing common; an experience so unique and fascinating they’ll not only remember, but also wish they found Shard first.

Art in Action
Note: This is Shard in the hands of Stephen Halpin, a professional. We do not recommend this for beginners.
We’ve always been ice enthusiasts. The freezer aftertaste left by common ice at home starkly contrasts with the beautiful clear ice at high-end cocktail bars; not to mention the lackluster effect it has on our cocktail presentation. Bars use $6,000 machines to create 300 lb. ice blocks of pristine quality. An enticing extravagance, but by no means reasonable for a household. It is time for a new solution.
Early prototypes consisted of modified coolers with ice forms of varying shapes. The main factors are insulation, freeze time, and standard freezer sizes. The longer it takes to freeze, the clearer the ice. But the longer the freeze time, the worse the consumer experience. The balance is found in a 4” x 4” x 6” ice block in a container sized to fit most American freezers that takes about 1-2 days to freeze. The wait time is minimized and the clear ice is large enough for multiple libations.
Once the ice is ready, it's important to have the right tools. Following recommendations from local ice chefs and our own ice tool tests, we will include an ice prong and an ice pick. The ice prong's multiple tines chip in relatively straight lines while the pick cuts along the natural ice crystal structure.
Each Holiday 2015 Limited Edition Shard is hand-fabricated by our founding team exclusively for our Kickstarter. Based on our latest prototype, the Limited Edition Shard creates a 4" x 4" x 6" ice block that is 55-60% clear. It's constructed with the same colors we plan for the final, dark gray exterior with a white interior, and finished with a clear logo placard made specifically for this limited run. We want to set the ice standard as soon as possible, that's why we're making sure we get Shard to you this holiday season. Be the first with the absolute finest, by December 24th!
The Shard Kit includes several different parts that need to be manufactured or sourced. The plan for each is detailed below:
- The Shard will be created using plastic injection of ABS plastic with EPS insulation. It will most likely require a two piece mold assembly. We have already worked with engineers to design the final Shard, and have identified a manufacturer and have a quote based on our CAD drawing, seen above.
- The hand-fabricated Shard is made from acrylic plexi in ¼” and ⅛” plastics welded together using an industrial solvent. It is insulated with a high R-factor foam insulation. We already have several hand-fabricated Shards completed and will continue to work with the same manufacturer for this next run.
- Ice picks, ice prongs and ice forms will be sourced from already identified U.S.A. distributors. We have tested each product to ensure a high quality for our customers.
We're raising funds to support the initial manufacturing and tooling costs for the Shard. The mold assembly and sourcing of multiple products require substantial upfront costs. We need your help to kickstart production!
Please note, you may be responsible for customs and duty.
International backers of Holiday 2015 Limited Edition, we cannot guarantee your reward will arrive before Dec. 24th due to slow shipping times during the busy holiday season. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Risks and challenges
While we will take every action to prepare for production, complications may arise during the manufacturing process. Accounting for a few speed bumps, we are estimating the delivery date for the Shard in April 2016.
It is possible that longer delays will occur. In every instance, we will keep our backers informed of new estimated delivery dates and any changes to the Shard Kit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
