Menu System Progress

Posted by Wes Herbst (Creator)

Here is a report from the menu & battle system programmer, John Minor:

List of changes include:

1. Cleaned up the code for the menu. I decided having on big conditional chain would be absurdly cumbersome and prone to breaking. Instead I created methods named for the chain of menu items you'd need to press to reach their code and then specified the exact conditions for reaching their code in an if statement. Then, depending on if the code is reached, they'll return true or false, which will let the game know when to stop checking the menu system per press of the confirm button. Later I'll do the same thing for canceling menu commands, maybe. It's more simple to cancel a menu command than to execute one. 2. Fixed some stuff with changing the party order. It now plays the cancel sound when you try to select someone who's already been placed and when you change the first party member, the player graphic changes. 3. Messed around with the map and events a little to learn RMXP more. I don't know how much of this I actually saved to V3, but when testing, keep this in mind if things don't go exactly how you expect. My current to do list:1. Finishing menu navigation.2. Adding all menu functionality. Currently only party order changing and quitting to the title menu are implemented.3. Work with you to make sure the menu design is spaced out right and making/finding a font that works well with the menu's dimensions. My future to do list:1. Modify the battle system to specifications.2. Modify all algorithms to specifications.3. Follower system, complete with Event System perfect functionality.4. Making the crafting system. 5. Misc.

Actually, the one I was reffering to seems to have disappeared. There are lots of colelctions of mods if you just google for specific things though.

Thats cool, the forums for RMXP are very helpful as long as you've done your research before asking a question. They can be a little fierce if you dont follow rules, but generaly RMXP forums are filled with experienced helpful folks!

We have been working hard at making the game seem less capable than it actually is. I spent many, many hour studying the maps and sprites from NES RPGs to try and reverse-engineer the logic that went into them. John and I, for the actual programming, have been working on a Dragon Warrior-like menu structure which is so far a perfect success.

Ah, you're using rpg maker xp? Cool. There is a wealth of resources for programming different modules. I'm sure the biggest challenge will making it feel 8 bit..it's a solid system though. Hope it all works out.
