9-17-17 UPDATE: THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN FUNDED!! A huge thank you to each and every one of our backers! If you have any further questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Our post kickstarter website is growingstrongbook.com and will be up in a few weeks from today's date. Thank you once again!
Growing Strong: Healthy Eating with the Whole Family is a first-of-its-kind children's story about the importance of eating healthy together, as a family. But more than that, it's about how choosing whole, natural food and learning how to garden and cook at home can be fun for kids, and make them stronger. This isn't a cookbook -- it's a story of healthy eating, whole lives, and growing stronger as a family.
In the story, there are two families. One family has been having some health difficulties. The other family, who has already established great eating and living habits, steps in to help them. Together, with the help of a friendly doctor, they learn to eat more vegetables and healthy whole foods, cut out many sources of sugar and processed food, and grow their own garden. They learn to cook together, eat together, and grow stronger together, as a family and as a neighborhood.
This book is aimed at early elementary are children whose families are looking to improve the health of the whole family through dietary changes -- whether to address a health problem or just build better health and stronger bodies for everyone, in a fun, interactive way that kids will enjoy rather than dread. Who knew eating vegetables could be fun? The book emphasizes whole natural foods rather sugar and processed foods, and is appropriate for families who want to get their kids on board with any natural and/or therapeutic diet. At the end of the book, I will create an illustrated list of the main concepts in the book, so kids and their parents can easily remember the important way to eat for health.

Why Write This Book?
I was just a kid when my mom was diagnosed with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis -- the kind of chronic illness that just gets worse and worse, oftentimes even despite the best medical intervention. Luckily for the family, my mother -- Dr. Terry Wahls -- was a physician and researcher and incredibly tenacious. She made it her personal mission to figure out exactly what MS was doing to her body, and she read every bit of research she could find. She switched the whole family over to a more natural diet based on paleo principles, and she not only improved her own health, but helped us all feel better and grow stronger.
That doesn't mean it was easy on my brother and me. I remember being overwhelmed and at times resentful by all the changes in diet that my mother wanted the family to follow. I wish I would have had a book that spoke to me on my level and helped me understand why healthy eating wasn't just good for my mom—it was great for me, too.
At the moment the book is aiming for 25 pages of story, all fully illustrated and a total of between 30 and 40 pages. The book will be 8" by 10" and in full color.
As far a timeline for the project, we expect that we will begin shipping books about six months after the Kickstarter closes. During that time, we'll be sharing lots of updates about the art and the process of moving along. We very much want to stay in touch with our backers.
Delving into the Rewards!
1. The Book Itself -- The children's book Growing Strong, the reason you're here to begin with!
2. The Printable Coloring Book -- This PDF file will be 10 pages with linework from the illustrations featured in the book for kids to color in.
This reward is available at all tiers.
3. The Fridge Checklist -- This downloadable PDF log will feature several brief interactive daily activities for your kids to do! One example of the activities we have lined up: coloring in a plate template with all the food (in their various colors!) that the child ate, with the note that the more color is featured in the meal, the more healthy it is! We envision it being placed on the fridge, hence the title. We are also open to suggestions in regards to the activities featured -- so if there is something specific you would like to see your kid to work on, please feel free to contact us!
This reward is available at the $45 level and up.
4. The Custom Portrait -- This is an 18x24 portrait of a special person in your life, whether that's a child, parent, friend, lucky acquaintance or someone else! While the content of the portrait will be largely up to the backer's discretion, I'm envisioning the subject in a power pose, with a background of greenery and vegetables. Collaboration will be key, however!
This reward is available only at the $1,000 level.
About the Illustrator/Writer
Zeb Wahls is freelance illustrator who is best known for her work on The Woman Card[s], a feminist deck of cards that features 15 American women who have changed the world. She is the daughter of Dr. Terry Wahls, who is well known in the medical world for her research into autoimmune diseases. Although this is Zeb's first children's book, she's incredibly excited to meet this challenge! You can view more of her work here.
Risks and challenges
We've already identified several printing options and I've got a great team supporting me that has experience in managing successful crowdfunding campaigns. The biggest challenge will simply be getting the illustrations all taken care of, but I'm confident we will be able to meet the goals and timeline we have staked out for the project.
