A BIG THANK YOU to Scott Baker (firstname.lastname@example.org) for making this video. Music by Emmett Cooke.
BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY needs your help to print our new book, THE SCOURGE OF THE MECHANICAL MEN (A Granville Woods and Nikola Tesla story). It is a 34 page story in a 44 page perfect bound book, which means 10 pages of extras!
If you are new to the series, the original six issue mini-series is about an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800’s Boston. They live in an alternate steampunk history where ghosts and demons are a normal part of life. Families known as the Great Houses control the economy of the Great States of America while the middle class and lower classes sole purpose are to serve the Great Houses.
THE SCOURGE OF THE MECHANICAL MEN is a standalone continuation of the series written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing. Art, inking, and color are by Gwynn Tavares.
Granville and Tesla are in a race for time to save Boston from a mysterious disease that turns human beings into machines.
Granville returns home to Liberty Row only to find an almost insane Tesla hiding there. But his efforts to get rid of Tesla hit a snag when they discover that a virus is turning humans into soulless mechanical men. Realizing that Emily and Travis Morgan of Morgan Medicinals are behind the outbreak, they fear that the twins are after more than just control of Boston – They want to take over the Great States of America.
EMILY AND TRAVIS MORGAN
Emily, a brilliant scientist, has spent her life creating cures for other people and seeing none of the financial rewards or acknowledgement. Her brother Travis handles the business side of the company and resents that neither he nor his sister has ever been given their due.
Can Granville and Tesla work together to save the city? Or will Boston and the Great States of America fall under the control of THE SCOURGE OF THE MECHANICAL MEN?
Cover art, inking, and color by Gwynn Tavares.
The entire story is off to our letterer, Troy Peteri, so here are the first three colored pages for you to see the amazing job that Gwynn has done.
NEW TO BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY?
No worries. The original trade paperback is available in several reward tiers.
Cover art by Emily Hu. Color and inking by Gloria Caeli.
WHAT'S IN THE TRADE?
I'm glad you asked. Not only does it include all six issues from the mini-series as well as the cover art, but it also contains a Boston Metaphysical Society ten page short story called, Hunter-Killer, and additional bonus pages. With art by Emily Hu and coloring by Gloria Caeli, the story is set at the beginning of the House Wars (my version of the Civil War) and features the crew of a prototype airship. I introduce three new characters: Gwen Warrick - Captain; Emmet Rochester - Navigator; and Joaquin Medina - Engineer.
And for what the story is about, well I have two words for you - Airship Battle!
The complete story of Hunter-Killer will ONLY be available in the trade.
Where the money goes...Your backing would enable us to pay for a print run of the book which means printing enough copies to send off to backers with some leftover to sell at conventions, incentives, shipping (which includes mailing envelopes, postage and handling.) And, of course, the fees (5% off the top, plus credit card fees.)

WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY
"Women and people of color take center stage in the Boston Metaphysical Society comic, written by Madeline Holly-Rosing, with art by Emily Hu. Inspired by fantasy and the art of storytelling, Holly-Rosing uses her imagination to create a fantastic story that is both well-written and fearless." - Valerie Complex (Fansided)
"If you have a taste for an intelligent, well written, elegantly illustrated award winning independent book, you can't go wrong with Boston Metaphysical Society!" - Alex Yarde (The Good Man Project)
"This very inventive series posits a totally believable Steampunk world that is populated by appealing characters who act (and react) in believable manners to the extraordinary events that swirl around them." - Robert Sodaro (Comic Reviewer at Examiner.com)
The original series was also nominated for Best Comic/Graphic Novel at the 2014 Geekie Awards.
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
For those of you who have read the original series, my version of Tesla is not what you usually see in fiction, but it does stay true to his obsessive nature. Granville was a real person and a contemporary of Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. (He did business with both of them.) As a writer, I wanted to put my fictional versions of Granville and Tesla in the same room together for an extended period of time to see what would happen. Let’s just say that Granville is more of a hard ass than I thought he was. This story allowed me to delve deeper into the lives of those who did not belong to a Great House, but were closer to the rest of us. Specifically, I wanted to show what it was like to live in Liberty Row, the middle class Negro neighborhood I created for this universe, and those whose work was used by the Great Houses, but never received any benefit for their effort.
I love writing BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY. Not only does it bring my love of science fiction and history together, (which by the way, equals steampunk), the steampunk time period allows me to address the themes of classism, sexism, and racism in America in a thoughtful and entertaining way. For at its very core, BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY is an American story. And you can't tell an American story without including women and people of color.
It has been and always will be important to me to write characters who, though they come from diverse backgrounds and have different points of view, are able to work together for the common good.
In addition to THE SCOURGE OF THE MECHANICAL MEN, we are offering the trade paperback which includes a brand new ten page story, a BRAND NEW bookmark, the anthologies, Boston Metaphysical Society: Prelude and Some Time Later, and a NEW BMS TRIQUETRA LAPEL PIN. Let me introduce you to...
MAIDEN OF THE MACHINE BY CAITLIN LIKE
A cartoonist based out of Portland, Oregon and Caitlin likes to make comics with fancy dresses, egregious floral motifs, occasional horror, and even more occasional face-punching.
The story: Maiden of the Machine is about a young woman named Elizabeth Watson who finds herself being the protagonist of a completely wrong kind of story. Too traditional to take part of her adventurer family lineage and too poor and obscure to be a true society lady, Elizabeth’s fortunes change with the introduction of famed industrialist Mr. Victor Lovelace in her life. She is soon pulled into his world of industry and conspiracy- where violence is the norm, sky pirates roam the skies and a woman with wings made of brass and steel hunts in the night. https://www.patreon.com/CaitlinLike
WRETCHES BY JAMES ROCHE
At the end of the day I just want to create some stuff and be able to look at the finished product and be proud. The idea of creating something totally new, that wasn’t here before, and to have it in front of me for the rest of my life, is why I do this. Here's a little "resume": • Been writing comics since about 2010. • Have had some shorts published. • Created the science fiction/fantasy series, Wretches, which has had its first two issues successfully funded on Kickstarter. • Co-Created The 4th Monkey: An Anthology for Awareness, which had it's first book successfully funded on Kickstarter. http://www.jameseroche.com/
The Story: This is a story about family. About loss. All Shea & Sean have is each other. Until they don't even have that.
SHAMAN’S DESTINY BY KYRUN SILVA
Writer, Artist and Creator of Shaman's Destiny. Writer and creator of Xob the Lightning Wielder
Kyrun's earliest memories are of drawing characters in his room while watching cartoons on TV. As a young boy, Kyrun couldn't stop drawing and creating. He was fascinated with everything from cartoons, sci-fi, fantasy and other geeky things, but comic books was and still is his main addiction. From the storytelling to the beautiful artwork, he knew he had to be a part of this world.
Kyrun launched Taurus Comics in 2018 with the slogan "less bull, more comics" His goal is to produce high quality books that will entertain and titillate the mind.
THE STORY: Follow the adventures of Malik as he is chosen by the spirit of the earth, Gaea, to protect our world. Our world is being overrun by threats from other planes and realms. It's Malik's job to help save us from these threats. Malik will be confronted by perils from all sides and with the help of his mentor, Jeph, he will have to decide who to give his trust to.
MY HERO BY JIM PERRY AND ALLI MYRES-PERRY
My hero! is a webcomic written by Jim Perry and illustrated by Allison Myres-Perry.
The story follows the adventures of a Guardian named Hasera who cannot perform even the most rudimentary requirement of her job: Healing. Hasera has been reading Harlequin romance stories since she joined The Order of the greatest Champion who ever lived across the 9 planes: Lark. One day she wishes to meet the great and chivalrous hero of her dreams. Remember two important sayings: “Be careful what you wish for.” and “Never meet your idols” http://www.myherocomic.com/
VANGUARD BY DAN BUTCHER (Adult)
Can and I have known each other since I first ventured on to Twitter. He was also kind enough to create fan art for the comic in the early years. He started, as do a lot of comic artist, by drawing and creating characters and comic strips at an early age. Studying art through school and ended up earning a degree in Illustration and Design. After a short career as an animator (where he realized drawing the same image over 200 times wasn’t for him), he defected to the ‘Dark Side’ and began working as a graphic designer, which he now does as his ‘proper’ job. He hails from the U.K. His work-to-date includes: The Awesome Comic – With Vince Hunt and Tony Esmond; El Marvo – with Luke Kondor & Ben Errington; Papercuts and Inkstains – Various; Assault of Fortress Doom – Lex McDonaldComichaus – Suited & Booted with Jon Laight
The story: Created, written, and illustrated by Dan Butcher, Vanguard focuses on an eponymous team of British superheroes, led by South London orphan Paul Drake AKA Pendragon.
