BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY needs your help to print our new standalone book, THE SPIRIT OF REBELLION (A Caitlin O’Sullivan Story). It is a 34 page story in a 44 page perfect bound book, which means 10 pages of extras!
Here's our cover!
Who will love Boston Metaphysical Society?
- Fans of Penny Dreadful, Girl Genius, Ruse, steampunk and gaslamp fantasy stories.
- People who like to read paranormal, historical fiction, and/or alternate history.
- If you like character-driven comics with a mix of paranormal and science fiction, then these are the comics for you!
Even after saving Boston from The Shifter, Caitlin is thrown out by her mother for working with Samuel and Granville. When she goes to Samuel for help, he takes her to the boarding house of an old friend in Philadelphia. There she discovers a ghost, the beginning of a rebellion, and perhaps her destiny.
Like Boston, the poor and working class of Philadelphia are pushing back against the Great Houses, and Caitlin and Samuel are caught in the middle of it. And much to her surprise, Caitlin has discovered that the battle with The Shifter has left her with telekinetic powers. What no one realizes is that a Pinkerton by the name of Harry Connelly has taken a special interest in Caitlin and the boarding house. Is he friend or foe? And what does this mean for Samuel and Caitlin?
THE SPIRIT OF REBELLION is a standalone continuation of the original six issue mini-series.
First three pages:
NEW TO BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY?
If you are new to the series, the original six issue mini-series is about an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800’s Boston. They live in an alternate steampunk history where ghosts and demons are a normal part of life. Families known as the Great Houses control the economy of the Great States of America while the middle class and lower classes sole purpose are to serve the Great Houses.
The original trade paperback is available in several reward tiers.
COVER ART BY EMILY HU. COLOR AND INKING BY GLORIA CAELI.
WHAT'S IN THE TRADE?
I'm glad you asked. Not only does it include all six issues from the mini-series as well as the cover art, but it also contains a ten page short story called, Hunter-Killer, and additional bonus pages. With art by Emily Hu and coloring by Gloria Caeli, the story is set at the beginning of the House Wars (my version of the American Civil War) and features the crew of a prototype airship. I introduce three new characters: Gwen Warrick - Captain; Emmet Rochester - Navigator; and Joaquin Medina - Engineer.
And for what the story is about, well I have two words for you - Airship Battle!
The complete story of Hunter-Killer will ONLY be available in the trade.
THE SCOURGE OF THE MECHANICAL MEN (A Granville Woods and Nikola Tesla Story)
This was our first standalone continuation of the series and it is available as well.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
I love writing BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY. Not only does it bring my love of science fiction and history together, (which by the way, equals steampunk), the steampunk time period allows me to address the themes of classism, sexism, and racism in America in a thoughtful and engaging way. For at its very core, BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY is an American story. And you can't tell an American story without including women and people of color.
It has been and always will be important to me to write characters who, though they come from diverse backgrounds and have different points of view, are able to work together for the common good.
In addition to THE SPIRIT OF REBELLION, we are offering the trade paperback which includes a brand new ten page story, a BRAND NEW bookmark, the anthology Boston Metaphysical Society: Prelude, and the first novel set in this universe, BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY: A STORM OF SECRETS, plus a NEW TEAPOT LAPEL PIN. It is 1 inch in diameter and will be an antique bronze color. (See image below.)

It was recently awarded a Silver Medal as well as The Write Companion Award for Best Overall TOP PICK - Adult, Children's and Young Adult categories in the Feathered Quill Book Awards.
Story: As the Great Houses of Boston jockey for power, an ex-Pinkerton detective, his psychic wife, and his father-in-law must contend with treachery, subterfuge, and a new demonic threat, in this political and supernatural thriller set in an alternate-history Boston of 1890.
The award winning cover is by Luisa Preissler. Title Graphics by Anke Koopman.
And if you haven't read Boston Metaphysical Society: Prelude yet, then this would be the perfect time to get it. This anthology of short stories and novellas includes stories of how Granville and Samuel met and their first case together; what set Caitlin on her path; and how Samuel met his wife, Elizabeth Weldsmore Hunter. Several reward tiers include it as either a pdf or print version.

A little bit about the creators and their stories:

He has to reconcile the regimented existence he's worked his whole life to perfect versus the outrageous one he's unintentionally created for many others and himself. Will he understand what it all means before the timeline completely unravels?

I, of course, am Allen Carter. Writer, Illustrator, promoter, freelance artist. While many people will say that they didn't have a typical upbringing, for me it's very true: A black man born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and not in the military--- you just don't get too many of us. Starting from age six, I started my fascination with storytelling, and at age eight, I wrote and illustrated my first comics out of legal sheets and construction paper. Today, I take my comic titles (Damn Tourists, The Figure-Of-Speech Mongoose, Cosmic Force) and other artwork on the road each year for the 'Comic Convention Circuit."

DEAD BY WEDNESDAY by Kim and Sam Eggleston
Dead By Wednesday started life as a re-imagined pulp noir -- except in space (because when isn't that more fun?) with a prickly, chip-on-her-shoulder bounty hunter as the lead. It follows Wednesday Daring's adventures as she tracks bounties, evades the bad guys, and sometimes ends up rescuing a stressed-out damsel or two, although Wednesday swears she's not really one of the good guys.
Sam and Kim Eggleston are a husband-and-wife creative team from Michigan. They both came to the comics world from backgrounds in journalism and media, and started writing and editing a variety of indie comics projects in 2011. A few years later, they made their first creator-owned comic together, Dead By Wednesday, with help from the wonderful people on Kickstarter.

In this story, we'll follow the NYPD's attempt to take down the Duchess once and for all, through the eyes of one of its passengers, Jack Tinson. All the while, Jack's own allegiances and motivations remain in question...

CHRONOINTEL by Jason Beckwith
Brandon is a brilliant young physicist who develops a technique for sending pulses of light through space-time. Instead of building the transmitter, he first builds the receiver that catches the light pulses and converts them into data. Five minutes after turning it on for the first time, pulses of light begin to come from nowhere and fire into the receiver. Once the computer decodes the first messages, he realizes that it’s from himself, from the future.
Jason left a full-ride scholarship in computer information sciences at UCSC to enter the private sector in Silicon Valley and began his career at advertising agencies by programming cross platform CD-Roms for companies like Microsoft, Disney, Nike, Apple and Netscape. Now working solely as a comic book author and cinematographer for narrative films, Jason is following his dream of story creation. His biggest goal is to entertain and provoke thought with stories of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations.
