Soul Puzzler - Turbo Edition is the All-in-One Version of Soul Puzzler, a 2-player, head-to-head, tile placement puzzle game inspired by the puzzle-based video games of the 90's to now, and the Dark Realm Expansion. Soul Puzzler - Turbo Edition is easily accessible to all players with added characters and abilities to add increased depth that will please the more experienced gamer and past Soul Puzzler players. 

Thanks to the returning art style of Rodrigo "Rush" Martinez, Soul Puzzler - Turbo Edition is endowed with an art style reminiscent of the games within the Puzzle Video Game genre. His craft and imagination has been the foundation of the creation of the world of Aurasal, the realm in which Soul Puzzler exists.

Soul Puzzer - Turbo Edition

Gameplay: During each turn a player may take one of two actions:  

• Play a Soul Token from their Soul Well  

• Switch a Soul Token’s location with an adjacent Soul Token*  

*Any Soul Token that is not located diagonally, is adjacent to the Soul Token next to it.  

In order to play a Soul Token, you take a Soul Token from your Soul Well and place it in the bottom most square of the column of your choice. Once the Soul Token is placed or a Soul Token is switched, the turn then goes to the next player. You may not undo an opponents turn by switching back a soul token that was just switched. Only one Action may be chosen each turn unless an ability tells you otherwise.  

If at any time during your turn, or your opponents, there is a row or column of 3 or more adjacent Soul Tokens of the same color, the scoring begins.

During Scoring, each player removes any of their Soul Tokens that are in a row or column of 3 of more like Soul Tokens and places them back into their Soul Well. Once this step is done, each player gains points equal to the Soul Tokens they removed. After scoring, each player may trigger their Score Ability on their character card if possible. At this step if there are any Soul Tokens not on the bottom row or adjacent to another Soul Token below them, they are moved down until they are. If at any time during your turn you no longer have any Soul Tokens in your Soul Well, you must take the switch action.  

The game ends when one player gets to 15 points.

So these are examples of characters whose abilities center around Token Removal, but all are very different. With Jax, upon scoring (creating a match of 3, 4, or 5 of our Soul Tokens in a row) Jax can remove all Soul Tokens above one of his Soul Tokens being removed. With Sacre though, when scoring she will place a Dragon Egg that when it explodes, removes all Tokens (Both Soul Tokens and Ability Tokens on the board). Lastly, Yuu can use her bird Shini twice per game in order to remove a single Soul Token from the board. So each contain the ability to remove Tokens from the board, but each with their own quirks.

Now with Token Movement characters, they are mainly Ability Token based. Bonnie has the ability to move any Token in a straight, unhindered line to become adjacent to one of her Soul Tokens, meaning you can manipulate another players tokens or set up a score with your own Soul Tokens. Cho has the ability to move a token up and over other Soul Tokens in order to place them away from scoring opportunities of your opponent or to set up a score for yourself. Lastly, Mer can push Soul Tokens around causing Tokens above them to fall with the space that was freed up. As you can see, each contains a different movement ability that can set up different scoring and denial windows.

Now these are characters that I consider Wild cards among the others in the game, each with an ability that completely changes the dynamics of the game. With Eurus, all Soul Tokens float, meaning that in any instance in which a Soul Token would fall, other than initial placement, it will float to the top, therefore creating a denial situation for your opponent as they begin losing places to drop Soul Tokens onto the board. Ichi is a win big or lose hard character. Depending on how you want to push your luck, you could be placing an extra Soul Token every turn, but the dice are not always kind and your opponent will certainly accept their extra Soul Token placement. Sanshi is, what I consider, the handicap player. If you are introducing a new player to the game, he is an excellent opponent for teaching. Though this doesn't mean he cannot win. In the original Soul Puzzler Tournament that was played among the playtesters, Sanshi was able to pull out the overall victory and become champion!

Aurasal is a cosmic mystery. A large beautiful world full of wonder, delights, and sweeping vistas where the sunlight shines with a constant, warming presence. However, perhaps due to the quirks of nature or the whims of some unknown power, the world spins in such a way in which the sun only shines on one half of the planet. If the World of Light is something of a beautiful wonder, the dark side is its antithesis. Cold, gloomy, unknown and forgotten—the Midnight Lands are full of the most hostile terrain imaginable. Near the equator of Aurasal, light merges into the darkness; here in the forever dusk and eternal dawn, exists Aurasal’s crown jewel, the city of Concordica.   

 And in this place where the denizens of the light and dark meet, trade, and politic, they also do something more. They fight.  

The board game is based on the popular event in Concordica in which souls are waged against one another to prove their might and intellect. Every year there is a tournament in which different counties send representatives to battle for a place amongst the greatest in the realm. This is the Soul Puzzler Tournament.  

Risks and challenges

After the successful Kickstarter of Soul Puzzler, my first self-published tabletop game, I have worked to increase the game quality to provide a better gaming experience for you all. Soul Puzzler - Turbo Edition is ready to print. As such the only real uncertainty I foresee for the project are the timings for manufacturing and shipping. As a backer, I've seen things slip on many Kickstarter projects in this department! So, I’ve taken all the production information and added in a bit of wiggle room to assure your timely deliveries. I believe I can deliver Soul Puzzler - Turbo Edition to you by (and perhaps before) November 2018, with a quality we can all be very pleased with. The Original Soul Puzzler was delivered within 2 months, so I believe that this can happen again!
