About this project
What are Freight Farms? High volume crop production units that can be quickly implemented and easily operated to grow food any environment. Each unit can create local food economy that can empower communities to reduce the global footprint of food in a sustainable and profitable manner.
Why Freight Farms?
Food Deserts- Access to quality fresh food has become out of reach for communities in even the most industrialized parts of the world. Large regions no longer have the ability to harvest crops due to climate change, urban sprawl and shifts in the economic landscape.
Food Miles- The carbon footprint of food is something we rarely think of when eating something like a fruit or vegetable. But to supply a growing population, food is imported from other parts of the world. The average tomato is shown to travel 1500 miles before getting to your plate.
Food Cost- The costs of commercial growing are shared by everyone.
Labor, Refrigeration and Transportation costs make up the majority of what you pay for your produce. Variables in harvest volume and quality do to weather can be a huge cost to suppliers and the industries that rely on a steady product.
Freight Farms can offer a low cost and low impact solution to these problems. Freight Farms are easy to use systems that increase local fresh food access, create a local food economy, keep money in the community and decrease the carbon footprint of food production. The system is designed to be largely self sustained and be as automated as possible. Solar energy will provide the majority of electricity that is needed while a traditional connection will allow the unit to be plugged in when/if necessary.
We need to raise $26,040 in order to build the complete unit and put it into full harvest cycle. Once in production, we will be able to sustain a harvest cycle 365 days a year. After this first unit is built we can then manufacture the same results for anyone who requests a Freight Farm of their own.
The continued operation of this unit will act as a catalyst for sustainable urban food supply We have partnered with local businesses who will buy the produce that the first unit will generate. Now we are ready to build the first Freight Farm production unit! Please help us to fund the materials, equipment and fabrication that are needed for this first unit.
About the system Recycled Shipping Container:
Fabrication of the unit begins by insulating the interior walls with high R-value to eliminate unwanted air flow and heat loss.
Constructing an entrance will include an environmental barrier, much like a spaceship, to keep the climate in the growing area at a constant temperature. The top of the container will be equipped with photovoltaic cells, additional panels can be added to the side of each unit to reach desired power requirements or to compensate for the location of the unit. Air ventilation and an air conditioning system will be integrated into the back wall of the container, adding a minor addition to the length of the unit. Outfitting the unit with an electrical panel and standard outlets will allow further equipment to be used for different stages throughout the harvest cycle.
Interior Growing system:
Our first unit will be able to produce lettuce and herb varieties.
We will be using a modified design of a multi-channel NFT system.
Our system adds a filtration component to the reservoir to extend the
water that each harvest requires. LED Grow lights will provide plants with the right color light that is essential for plant growth. Using less power than other grow lights, the LED lights are also more efficient by not adding unnecessary heat to the plant and to the climate.
Our system includes monitoring equipment to allow the most novice gardener to manage a full harvest. By notifying the grower of what the system needs,
each unit can be configured to keep you on point to reach your desired harvest. The use of beneficial bugs like ladybugs can make maintaining a pesticide and herbicide free climate an easy task.

We need to reach our goal of $26,040 to build our 40' x 8' unit.
If we can reach $30,000 we can build a 53' x 8.6' unit that will give us more crop yield per week and allow us to donate our entire first harvest cycle.
If we reach our goal we will start building in March of 2012 !
