About this project
Spokebug was funded June 22, 2012.

Hello! My name is Carl Boyd, and I'm the inventor/designer of the Spokebug, a clever device that is easy to attach to the front fork of your bike. It engages with a flick of the finger, grabbing a spoke, which prevents the front wheel from moving, thus immobilizing the whole bike. This allows you to lean it against anything without falling down. This is pretty handy in your home or workplace - just lean it against the wall. But the main reason I developed this was to hold your bike still and keep it from falling while you load cargo on it.
Spokebug works by simply grabbing a spoke on your front wheel, and immobilizing the wheel. This prevents the common problem of the handlebar twisting and then the bike falling.
The device weighs a mere 4 grams (less than a house key), so it's a great alternative to a kickstand for road and fixed-gear bikes.
You attach Spokebug to the front fork of your bike with the provided releasable zip-tie. It's designed to fit forks from 24mm wide to 38mm wide (that covers nearly all conventional bikes). And because the zip-tie is releasable, you can adjust it, or take it off and put it on another bike.
It took several tries to get it right!
Cool Material says: There are some products that are so ingenious and deceptively simple that you inevitably end up having a “why didn’t I think of that?” moment. Spokebug is one of those products
Mike at GearHungry said: Can't justify the heft of a kickstand on that lightweight fixie? Finally, there's a fix: Spokebug.
And cyclist Graham Wilson says: "Strange how things come full circle, and smart guys like these re-invent something that was once a standard part of most bikes. If they do well, then it proves that cyclists always wanted a device like that"
In addition to the Spokebug, we've developed two other products that are available as rewards in this campaign:
The Tuning Fork is a Toynbee Carriage Company original - designed by Tyler Avery. Is it a bottle opener? mini-fork? spoke wrench? or earbud cord-wrap? Yes! This little gizmo will be laser-cut from stainless steel in Chicago by our friends at Marco.
The Selector is a clever little incarnation of the classic 6-sided die that injects a little whimsy into the task of making those pesky commuting decisions: bus, bike, or blades? Roll this 20mm (3/4 inch) die and let luck pick your conveyance for you! Mike Anthony designed all the icons, and added the vintage detailing to the Selector, and it will be 3D printed in Chicago by the helpful folks at PSI.
The Spokebug, Selector, and Tuning Fork are the first designs to come out of Toynbee Carriage Company, a new business that designs products for urbanites who walk, bike or take transit. Our focus will be helping folks carry things around without the need of a motor vehicle. That's how the 'carriage' got into our name - it references the old use of the word, a 'conveyance of goods'.
Toynbee and this Kickstarter is supporting not just design for 'active transportation', but design for local manufacturing. Our products are developed with the capabilities of regional fabricators in mind. I have already arranged for manufacturing of the primary parts at fabrication shops here in Chicago. The main body of Spokebug will be made by PSI, and the tempered stainless wire clip will be made by Sterling Spring, both here in Chicago.
Fabrication shops have setup fees and offer price breaks for volume orders. So we need backing by you, to help us cover the up-front cost of ordering the manufacture of the parts that we will assemble the Spokebug from, at a large enough volume, so we can offer our products to you at a reasonable price.
I've been designing for 15 years, and teaching designers for over 5 years. Toynbee is not just my passion project to get useful design on the streets, it's also a means for me to offer paid design gigs to students that gives them real-world projects in their portfolio. Mike Anthony and Tyler Avery are the first of my students to design for Toynbee.
Free USA shipping is included for all rewards, and we can ship to the rest of the World if you add $10 to your pledge.
Thanks so very much for looking, and for supporting us!
