IT BEGAN BETWEEN TWO FRIENDS…
More than fifty years ago, two friends got together to document the recording of a new jazz album: Vince Guaraldi, a “reformed boogie-woogie piano player”, and Ralph J. Gleason, jazz/pop critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.
In a half-flooded studio, on their own dime, “Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus” was laid to tape and captured on film, including the breakout hit “Cast Your Fate To The Wind.”
Vince would go on to fame performing at the Hungry i and the Trident… composing the first-ever “Jazz Mass”… and creating the soundtracks for the beloved "Peanuts" animated programs, including "A Charlie Brown Christmas," which practically re-defined the sound of the holidays.
Ralph would soon become the co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, author the album liner notes for every major jazz artist, testify in court for the defense of Lenny Bruce, and help organize the Monterey Jazz Festival.
This original film of the 1962 recording sessions had been lost for several decades, until recently uncovered by another set of friends: Toby Gleason (Ralph’s son) and Andrew Thomas, a filmmaker who focuses on music and culture. Lovingly restored in high definition, these previously lost treasures are a definitive look at a transformative era in music.
But these films only documented a few months in the creative blossoming of Vince — and didn’t cover those times prior that formed his esthetic, or those years that followed when his remarkable career took off.
So, with the help of Dave Brubeck, Dick Gregory, George Winston, and an eclectic group of musicians, artists and social activists, Toby and Andrew have expanded Vince and Ralph’s raw footage into a new feature-length music documentary.
Featuring never-before-seen Guaraldi performances (plus a soundtrack constructed from previously unreleased material gleaned from Vince’s live and private studio recordings), you won’t hear or see any of this anywhere else.
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SECURE THE FINAL MUSIC LICENSING THAT WILL ALLOW US TO MAKE THE FILM AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE!
Originally presented as a special event at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and winner of five Best Documentary Awards at international film festivals, “The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi” is a musical / cultural journey that has already been celebrated by audiences and critics, and used by the Library of Congress to kick-off the national jazz celebration.
BUT IT’S NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR RELEASE, AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Although “festival licenses” were acquired for our limited showings and marketing, we need to expand the permissions to allow the finished film to be seen through home video and streaming, plus made available for schools and libraries who have asked for it to be in their collections.
And we want YOU to see it, too!
We paid for the production out of our own pockets (and from spare change between the couch cushions!) and it is complete. Except for the credits, that is… because we want to add YOU to those as well. After all, your kind participation in this Kickstarter campaign will make the film’s distribution possible. And that makes you a filmmaker in our book.
It’s that simple.
We need your help. We need it now. And we want to tailor our Kickstarter appeal in a way that might be part of your own holiday celebrations.
After all, what better gift for a friend, family or yourself than to be credited on an award-winning film — especially a film that explores an American musical icon whose music delights millions year after year?
We appreciate your participation, and we want you to be a permanent part of this fascinating musical adventure on film — a unique way to remember, and be remembered.

Risks and challenges
"The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi" WILL be released as soon as the music clearances are complete. It's all ready to go!
And after a (hopefully!) successful Kickstarter campaign, we will have the film and all its associated premium giblets sent ASAP for your enjoyment... noting that manufacturing and shipping at the end-of-the-year can be dicey -- those brief delays being a traditional part of the holiday season.
But we're making certain that the streaming premiums and "Gift Card" PDFs will be available up-tempo and on-time... but circumstances beyond our control, like holiday-season DVD replication and snow-storm compromised delivery pipelines, may incur some minor slippage of a couple days... Of course, we'll be keeping you posted every step of the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
