About

Earphones are recommended for watching the teaser video

So you've searched through all these amazing projects on Kickstarter. Probably watched our video, and now you've made it this far! We can't thank you enough for showing even this much interest. But, please, give us a few more minutes to show you just how much more we have in store.

[The video is, obviously, pre-pre-pre alpha footage just to show the kind of setting we are working on. To get a better idea of what we are trying to produce, keep reading]

Setting our project in a world that is, so far, unexpectedly unexplored in video games gives us an incredible amount of freedom to play with new mechanics in the horror genre. Combine this with the unrestricted development process we can have with an amazing Kickstarter community - as opposed to being tied to a publisher - and we have the perfect environment to bring you all an experience to remember.

 The Story

The mass evacuation of a tropical island home to a laboratory leading the way in scientific research. One panicking team of scientists who, in their last attempt to save their work, bring with them the last remaining, unhatched, Dinosaur egg. It would not remain unhatched for long.

The unassuming mainland USA, now home to a creature becoming increasingly impossible to control, must send a team back into the wilderness to recover the research capable of wiping the slate clean and returning the outputs of their research back to prehistoric extinction.

And so begins "Entropy". Plunged into the jungle and surrounded by threats nobody knows how to fight; you must maneuver across this deadly island and recover the intelligence needed to destroy the threat back home.

This task could never have been accomplished alone.

Characters

There will be 4 different playable characters in Entropy. Each with their different skills and abilities. We feel like the best way to show off these skills would be by showing how you could approach a real in-game scenario with each of these characters.

You have laboratory to enter that holds vital information for you to recover.

Soldier

Using the strength of this character, you may scale the fence around the perimeter of the laboratory. While not the most subtle route, it is direct and gets the job done. Any threats that you (inevitably) encounter can be held off for a small amount of time while the others have a chance to escape.

But still, don't expect to last long by yourself.

Medic

A medic in the wilderness is highly sought after, and so is only playable if you are not playing alone. Teaming up with any of the other characters, you can accomplish almost anything while they break into the lab; you hot on their heals. Being able to heal their wounds and give them treatments for their hunger and thirst makes you an invaluable asset.

Scientist

Who says we need to risk entering the laboratory? Set up on the perimeter and attempt to access the computers inside from your own device. Better watch your back though. Who wants to sit in one spot for too long when surrounded by monsters?

Expert

By using knowledge of the dinosaurs themselves, the expert can predict where in the building they may be hiding. Allowing him to plan his route through. He can also find gaps in the fence by following footsteps to gain access in the first place.

So what do these characters look like? Good question! If you look on over to our rewards, we are giving you the chance to design the look of these characters. When we have designs in place from the backers, we will show the world what the heroes of "Entropy" are like.

 Your Team

We believe that Entropy is the perfect fit for a multiplayer experience. Being stranded, alone, in this experience may be exhilarating; but it is nothing compared to facing it in a group of up to 5 other people.

What makes this multiplayer Different?

Think back over any horror / thriller games you have played together with your friends or family over the years. It was just that: Together. A joined experience. Nothing compared to the fear felt if you were alone in your bedroom with the lights off?

Well this is where Entropy is different. The online multiplayer features allow players to play even if they are not in the same room; with voice chat functionality.

But so what? Thats not exactly a new feature to gaming.

You're on an island surrounded by monsters trying to kill you. We don't just want to allow you to talk to other players - we want to replicate the communication you would have with your teammates in this situation in real life. Imagine becoming separated from your friend on the island and having weather block the communication from your walkie-talkie. That moment where it transitions from a multi-player team experience to a lonely, adrenaline fueled hunt for your friend though the wilderness is an idea we are really excited about. Seeing a light flicker in the distance and wondering if it is the torch from an ally or a predator moving in the distance. Finally hearing your friends voice come through after many agonizing moments of fear. That is what we are trying to accomplish.

You could even turn off your phone and leave your friend alone in the dark.

Survival is another aspect of gameplay in Entropy. Build fires, craft healing items and find food / water. You'll need all the energy you can get.

Competition

Decisions, decisions, decisions. As you may have seen, which character you play as changes the decisions you must make on the island. Use the scientists skills and sit in one place while hoping to access the computers? Or try and follow a soldier into the compound to reduce risk to yourself? These are all important choices for your survival, but remember, your allies don't have to outrun the dinosaurs... they just have to outrun you.

The idea of having an element of competition within the teamwork and survival of the game really excites us. But it is still in its idea phase so we will be writing more about it in our future updates over the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, if you have any ideas for us then let us know! We'd love to hear your take on things.

 Who are we?

Website

Twitter

Over at Meraki Studios, we are a company that has (for the best part of a year) been doing animation, design and programming work for other small independent studios.  Everything from websites to PC RPGs and mobile applications. Now, we are ready to have our name put onto a project of our own. Entropy.

This horror / thriller game is the natural progression for our small (6 strong) team; allowing us to build a community around a project we are truly passionate about. Leading to a future filled many quality games and experiences.

Where do you come in? Is £30,000 enough?

Here at Meraki Studios, Kickstarter isn't just about raising the money to bring our project to life. The £30,000 goal, our own savings and earnings as a company as well as the possibility of a grant from Epic Games themselves (thanks to our use of the UE4 engine... but don't worry, this would just be an added bonus, and not a vital part of the games funding)  we will have easily enough money to cover the games development. The amount of in-house talent we have from UI to animation helps cut down development costs by removing the need for outsourcing or hiring extra team members.

But there is one team member we do want on board though. You, of course. As well as the funding that Kickstarter can bring us, the main reason we are here is to build a community. A group of fans that we can grow and continue to show our love for in the many projects this company can produce in the future.

So as well as being a part of the creation of our first project, we hope that you will stick around and follow us on the rollercoaster of running a company in this industry. We promise, it'll be a great ride.

Where will the money go?

So where will your £30,000 go? Lets take a look.

As you can see, this is a rough overview (given in percentages) of where the Kickstarter funds will go. Ignoring our own money that will be put into the project.

More in depth breakdowns of costs will be released after the (hopefully!) successful end to this campaign, at each milestone of the games creation.

Updates

We want to make this process as transparent as possible, which is why we are setting up our update timetable from the offset. Throughout the campaign, we will update with any news regarding the campaign, funding milestones or ways that you guys can help us spread the word. After the campaign finished, we will release fortnightly updates ranging from techie stuff within the Unreal Engine to teaser screenshots and (eventually) gameplay videos.

We will, of course, answer any questions asked of us (both via the comments section or personal email to will@merakientertainment.com) either in updates, as a reply to the comment or in an email. We welcome these questions (or suggestions!) so feel free to hit us up with anything you may need.

We hope you love our idea as much as we do, and will help us turn it into a reality. I don't doubt i'll be speaking to you all soon.

Rewards

For those wondering, here are the T-shirt rewards. Available for both men and women, and in all sizes. These are subject to change, but we will ask for your feedback if we do decide to make any design changes.

Risks and challenges

If you've ever backed a game on Kickstarter before, or even if you are simply a fan of the industry, then you already know the mountain of challenges developers must overcome to bring their vision to life. Even a team with as much experience as ours will encounter bugs, mechanics that are hard to implement (or that don't add anything to the game) and remember we're only human; So illness and other non-technical setbacks can never be ruled out.

This is especially true considering our Multiplayer ambitions. Multiplayer adds a whole new level of challenges to "Entropy" with servers and networking code (trust us, its not as easy as it sounds) to worry about. But thats the beauty of it, it's us that needs to worry about it; not you! We have the expertise and experience to deal with any such problems.

Expertise and experience aside, it truly is our passion to bring this project to life and build a community (that we hope you will be a part of) that we can deliver quality experiences to for many years to come which will drive us through these challenges.
