Demons Of Asteborg is a new original title for the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis which will be released as a physical cartridge and also a downloadable ROM for emulators and flash cards. Moreover, we plan to port the game on the Nintendo Switch and Steam.
It is a platform-based game with some metroidvania elements inspired by a lot of other Mega Drive / Genesis titles like Ghouls'n Ghosts, Castlevania, Mickey Mania, Space Harrier or Panzer Dragoon.
We are passionate about retro-gaming and we love trying to push the Mega Drive to the limits of its capabilities. The game is still at the prototype stage in the current state but we really want to see it out on the Mega Drive in 2020, that's why we need the funding generated by Kickstarter to remunerate our developers, and the artists we working with, in order to complete the game and make it accessible as quickly as possible.
OST track (Cemetary) :
Humans : They are, mostly, peasants who have forgotten the art of war over time.
Demons : They live up to 500 years and are very good fighters. They have a human appearance, apart from some differences (red pupils, horns, developed musculature, reddish complexion).
Monsters of Hell : They live in hell and give their lives to serve Kzorox, the master of hell.
A long time ago,
humans and demons lived peacefully together in the Kingdom of Asteborg.
But over time, their differences kept the two peoples apart, until the day when the great war broke out.
Humans and demons struggled for years.
Out of breath, humans gradually lost hope.
But one day, a brave half-demon half-human man, Sagramor, managed to open a portal to hell and jailed himself up with all the demons.
Peace returned within the Kingdom, the bards sang the praises of the half-blooded hero, until he became a legend ...
Centuries later, Zadimus, the king's counselor, reveals himself to be a demon rescued from the apocalypse.
Having patiently recovered his strength for several centuries, he is finally able to open the portal and release his brothers to regain power over the Kingdom ...
The inevitable happens: the demons invade the Kingdom, ravaging the villages and farms of humans who have forgotten the art of war.
Gareth, a mysterious knight of the royal guard seems to be the only hope of Asteborg...
Demons Of Asteborg is a platform game mixing action and strategy. The Ghouls'n Ghosts-style fights make it a real challenge for players.
The game is playable alone - or possibly in cooperation - and each player has a melee weapon and an ability (like a projectile) that can be launched/used in 3 directions (left, right and up).
The player also have a special attack based on his current ability.
The game has a scenario and a universe of his own, inspired by a lot of games, movies and other works.
The goal will be to defeat Kzorox the supreme master of hell. It will be necessary to reach him by traversing the whole Kingdom of Asteborg and its distant countries in order to reach the portal leading to the other world.
The player will play as Gareth, a member of the Royal Guard of the Kingdom of Asteborg. He will then have to travel all over the Kingdom, braving winds and swamps, and splitting anyone who gets in his way.
8 levels will be available, in this order:
- plains & village
- fields & cemetery
+ A bonus level, arcade style, inspired by Panzer Dragoon and Space Harrier.
Destructibles objects & Items :
In Demons of Asteborg you can collect - for the moment - two types of items : vigor potions and health potions. These permit to refill your health and vigor bar. Without vigor you will no longer be able to use your special attack or your ability (and without health you just.. die).
These items can be found by destroying enemies or destructibles objects (see below).
Some items will aslo grant special abilities to the player...
As we mentioned, we are fans of retro video games and our developers are working hard for this project. We try to exploit the maximum capacities of the Mega Drive, while inspiring us with old game techniques previously done on the console.
At the moment the game does not contain the final graphics at 100%. Indeed, some graphic elements belong to us but we also used many free / purchased assets to realize our prototype. If the project is funded, all the graphic elements of the game will be redone by the artists with whom we work.

Risks and challenges
Developing a game on a aged console like the Mega Drive is a real challenge.
Indeed, the optimization of the game is a key element for the success of the project.
The limited number of displayable elements and the differents constraint that imposes the Mega Drive forces us to be very attentive on every detail.
We are sure that many of you have known the legendary titles like Ghouls'n Ghost or Castlevania and we believe in the strength of the Mega Drive community, hoping that our project will touch your nostalgia.
The prototype we have is far from 100% complete but we are moving very fast and we already have ideas for improvements that are not on this page but that will certainly be the strong points of the final game.
Therefore, we think that one year would be enough to finish Demons of Asteborg.
