**UPDATE!** We are translating the book to Spanish, German and whatever you suggest! Pledge $500 or more to be involved in the process and get a book credit, plus your own dedication!**
Where does poop come from and what happens to it when we flush it down the pipes? Most kids don't know the answers to these questions, and yet the topic fascinates them. It's a perfect teachable moment, an opportunity to get kids excited about science, and most parents miss out on it because, well, there aren't many good resources to teach kids about this stuff.
That's why we are so excited about All About Poop! (Here is a sneak peek of the whole book!)
Yes, it's a book about poop, but it's NOT your typical book about the fact that we all poop, nor is it a book about going to the potty. All About Poop is a fun, yet educational children's book (grades K-3) that teaches kids about the digestive system and what happens to poop when we flush it down the pipes.
What's even better: we have partnered with Jason Lindsey, a.k.a "Mr. Science," and the founder of Hooked on Science, to design a teacher and parent guide that will expand upon the concepts discussed in All About Poop and will include really cool experiments about the digestive system and poop!
So Why do we need your help?
Pinwheel Books is a small, independent and very passionate publishing house for children's books. We've been around a little bit over a year and have published two books on a relatively small scale (local bookstores, some online outlets and Amazon). But for our next project, we want to go BIG. It won’t be easy, since we have to compete with big publishing houses with deep marketing pockets.
As you probably know, publishing costs a lot of money--it's thousands of dollars in printing and distribution costs. Pinwheel Books is not some big, powerful publisher: it's a tiny publishing house working tirelessly with a very tight budget to make books come to life.
We want to make sure that parents and teachers all over the country hear about this fantastic book that turns the science of digestion and poop into a fun learning experience. But with our current budget, it's a big stretch for us to do the kind of marketing campaign we think this book deserves. We are working with a publicity firm in NY which will be helping us with our media outreach--they'll help us pitch the big newspapers and magazines, and hopefully they'll get us some pretty awesome radio interviews, so we can spread the word about this magical book. But all of this is going to be very costly for Pinwheel Books: over $14,000!
We are coming to you in hopes that we can raise half of that money--$7000--via Kickstarter. If we are able to raise this amount, it will make a huge difference to Pinwheel. First, we'll be able to allocate more of our current budget to our upcoming projects, which are equally deserving (visit our web site to learn about our next book, Dylan's Day). With your help, we won't have to put all of our eggs in one basket! And if we raise more than our goal, it will help us cover some of the costs of printing the book and hopefully help us finance a book tour.
Who Are We? (Or, How Do I Know You're Serious About This?)
Pinwheel Books was founded by Sylvia Pagán Westphal, an award-winning journalist and mom of five kids who realized how rewarding, yet difficult, it was to get a book published. Sylvia’s right hand (and illustrator extraordinaire, queen animatrix, blog maven, and so much more) is Nicole Gsell, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Together, Sylvia and Nicole work hard to further Pinwheel’s MISSION: to find undiscovered, talented authors and illustrators and give them a chance to get their first book out.
The book was written by mom blogger Kate Hayes, and it was masterfully illustrated by artist Brenna Vaughan. This is their first children's book.
Here are some snapshots:
And we are already hard at work developing the All About Poop animated app, which we can't wait to share with our supporters when the book launches in September. To take a look at how we bring books to life, check out our video of our first animated app, Sam and Ben:
Those of you who support us at the POOP MASTER level will get your very own, hand-painted "doodle" from Nicole Gsell. To get a sense of what one of these look like, check out her "doodle" or Brenna Vaughan, the illustrator of All About Poop:
Also, our All About Poop poster, which is included in some of our rewards, will look similar to this (we are resizing it, but it's pretty similar to this page from the book):
**UPDATE!!! We will thank ALL of our backers in a poster (8.5 x 11) in heavy card stock that will have the cover of our book, a list of all our backers’ names and a header saying: “Our Kickstarter Hall of Fame”. If our campaign gets funded, we will mail one of these to each backer, and for pledges $20 and above we will send the poster signed by publisher Sylvia Westphal, author Kate Hayes and illustrator Brenna Vaughan!***
Thanks SO MUCH to all our supporters--every penny counts and we are extremely grateful for your help!
