Bough House is dedicated to creating products that are beautiful and functional. Our designs last because they are both well made and designed for use over multiple developmental stages. The Tablet is our first product and has been made for use by the entire family.
Rob and Anna are committed to making long-lasting wooden toys and furniture for children of all ages. Anna’s perspective as an art therapist gives her a unique take on development and how creativity plays a role in a child’s life beyond drawing. Her knowledge about how children interact with art and their environment gives the Tablet a unique quality-it is designed to be used from scribbling, to storytelling and pretend play, to journaling, sketching and homework. Rob’s background in design gives Bough House innovations a clean timeless look and his woodworking expertise gives these products an heirloom quality.
What is the Tablet? The Tablet is anything you can imagine- it's a lap desk for kids and an organizational tool for the home. The Tablet sized to fit either standard letter or A4 paper, consists of a beautiful birch plywood surface and a magnetic wooden dowel. The dowel secures the paper in one of four ways, allowing the tablet to be positioned either vertically or horizontally, depending on use and handedness.
Health and Safety We use Birch plywood certified by CARB (California Air Resources Board) that contains no added formaldehyde. Our finish contains no noxious chemicals or solvents: only beeswax and food grade mineral oil, in our own homes we use it on cutting boards.
Our Next Step
A workshop is necessary to move from prototype to production with a dedicated space to create, store and package the Tablet. In addition to a workspace, there are a few pieces of equipment we need:
Belt/disc sander to produce smooth, flat ends and edges for the dowel and tablet; a dedicated sanding station will also speed up the sanding time per tablet, helping us to keep our products affordable.
A wood branding iron with separate heads for our logo and name will provide a simple way to make sure the tablet is right side up, at a glance, allowing the dowel and tablet to magnetically attract, rather than repel each other.
Risks and challenges
We are excited to have this opportunity to establish the Bough House workshop. Community is important to us, so we hope to set up the workshop in our own neighborhood. Because we live in a city, finding that location will be challenging. However, we truly believe that Bough House will help support children’s creativity and engage our community, beyond just our products. Setting up our workshop will help us realize that dream.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
