We've been working on this film for many years and are excited to finally be able to present it to a wide audience. We originally considered the film a cautionary tale, but the divisive and dangerous political climate in the United States today makes it more urgent than ever that we organize screenings across the country and engage in dialogue with communities about the relevant topics in the documentary.
Is your life decided by your genes?
Our documentary answers this question and reveals how scientists and policy makers have promoted the gene as a pseudo-scientific myth, and rolled back gains on race, class, and gender equality for decades, based on the idea that genes determine who we are and what we can achieve. Our film uncovers the damage this myth continues to do to the values upon which our democracy is based, and which continues to damage our chances and our hopes for the American Dream.
We need to raise money to promote and distribute this important and valuable documentary … and we want you to be part of this project. We will be releasing the film independently in the fall following its sneak preview screening at the Santa Fe International Film Festival, where it was selected as Best Documentary.
"A Dangerous Idea is not only rich historic storytelling but an important reminder about the connection between science and equality; a subject that couldn't be more relevant. This film should be shown in schools as it is ripe for intense discussion and needs to be seen by as wide an audience as possible." Aaron Leventman, Director of Programming, Santa Fe Film Festival
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Together, we will launch a grassroots promotional and community outreach initiative to support our release in the Fall. The more successful these initial openings are, the wider we can expand across the country, working with partners to engage communities in unique ways that can only be done in a theatrical setting.
Your help will allow us to:
- Organize screenings in 15 Cities across the USA by working with local and national stakeholder organizations to raise visibility of the film and the issues.
- Invite some of the important thinkers in our film to participate Q&A panels after screenings
- Develop the educational materials to accompany screenings

A DANGEROUS IDEA reveals how public misunderstanding of genetics and the promotion of genetic pseudoscience has served as a rationale for oppression and discrimination throughout modern American history. Like no other film before it, A DANGEROUS IDEA maps the front lines in the battle for the soul of this country, as economic and ideological interests continue to use the gene myth to unravel the American Dream. The film raises the question: Are we doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past? It presents the viewer with two deeply held views that are diametrically opposed: the belief that the American Dream of equality is possible to attain, and the belief that genes make us who we are.

Risks and challenges
Making a film is always a long, expensive affair and carries a great deal of risk. Financially, we are already very extended, and we have a number of costs to cover before the film can be professionally finished (including archival footage licensing, music licensing, color correction, and a sound mix). Creatively, we have no guarantee that our film will appeal to a major distributor or network.
However, we are a team of experienced filmmakers, and we fully understand the hard work, dedication, and funding it will take to see this project through to the end. We have received great responses from test audiences and we are extremely committed to getting this film out to as many people as possible, as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
