With humble appreciation, I request your support for our upcoming project, we were an island . The piece, currently in development, Premieres at Danspace Project February 20-22.
This Kickstarter campaign is to help raise money to cover the cost that it takes to make this work. Your donation contributes to dancer wages, countless hours of costly rehearsal space, production and administrative support, liability insurance, light and costume designer fees, sound designers and videographers, as well as free outreach performances for the public. By paying some of the best NY dancers and creative collaborators, we are also benefiting the New York economy by creating jobs for these hardworking folks.
We truly depend on the support of individual donors like you to make our work successful. As you know, all arts organizations at this time are struggling to stay afloat. Even as dance becomes more popularized by art institutions and museums, in the US there still remains a devastating shortage of funds because of dance’s perceived ephemeral and “free” nature. This unfortunate financial reality for dancers both prevents amazing work from being made and moving these new and innovative ideas to the forefront of culture.
Incredible organizations that produce ground-breaking dance— such as Danspace Project—work endlessly to provide the best support they can to so many talented artists. But they can't do it alone. It is true that you cannot buy dance and hang it on your wall, but you can have, perhaps, an experience that brings you in to your body and makes you think and feel in new, interesting ways. This is radical, beautiful, and we need more of this in the world.
Thank you so much for your support.
Risks and challenges
The risks that come with not raising the funds for this project are, not being able to cover the basic production costs it has taken to build this work from the ground up. This means hours of dancers and creative team labor as well as rehearsal space rental and paying back all the loans I have taken out just to get to where the work is now. Every dollar helps.
Thank you so much.
