Armed Guard Garden is a collaborative dance work premiering at New York Live Arts February 15-18, 2012.
Armed Guard Garden is an ensemble work created by Vanessa Anspaugh with performers Aretha Aoki, Lydia Okrent, Molly Lieber, Mary Read, and Niall Noel Jones. Our dramaturge for the piece is Susan Mar Landau, with costume design by Emily Roysdon, sound design by Ryan MacDonald, and is in conceptual collaboration with Cassie Peterson.
ABOUT Armed Guard Garden: Questioning how we maintain or reinforce difference between ”the garden and the world”, between your land and my land, between human and animal or Self and Other? On borders, back-roads, and in-betweens, Armed Guard Garden looks to the queer body as a site of resistance and to current “occupations” to both imagine and critique notions of paradise and “resting place.”
ABOUT KICKSTARTER: Kickstarter is a unique platform for funding creative endeavors. In exchange for your support, we offer a variety of rewards--and our endless gratitude and love! Because funding is all-or-nothing, it is imperative that we raise our full goal of $10,000 to move forward with this project, otherwise nobody will be charged and the campaign will not be a success.
WHAT ARE THE REWARDS? We are thrilled that many of the rewards we are able to offer for your support are the artwork of a group of incredibly talented and diverse makers, who also happen to be both a part of my community and my friends. Most of these rewards are unique in that only one or a few of each exists, which means that in addition to supporting the production of Armed Guard Garden you will also own rare and special work of art.
WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO? Although Armed Guard Garden is being produced by New York Live Arts, we still need funds to cover the costs of daily company operations: rehearsal space rental; paying fair wages to dancers, lighting, costume, sound designers; insurance; and workers compensation. We are also working hard to expand our outreach program, which brings free performances to hospitals and public schools. At the end of the day, making innovative dance is both physically demanding AND expensive: we're working hard on our end, but we need your pledge to help make Armed Guard Garden a success!
