Nocveil is a small passion project of mine. I want to create a game like those I loved and I want to share it with anyone I can. This game WILL release and it WILL be FREE regardless of its kickstarter's completion, but the kickstarter will help improve its quality tenfold and help me promote and distribute it. I've already gotten a firm start on the project before even considering a kickstarter. Right now the game is in a playable state, but there are many improvements that could still be made.
The world of Nocveil is dense and dark. A permanent shadow is cast over the land as the inhabitants live in an atmosphere of dusk to twilight. It’s a harsh and hard land to survive and no one creature is free of predators. A small race took to top of the food chain in this land. Their quick and nimble nature mixed with the razor sharp tails gave them a great advantage as a pack where almost nothing could take them down. But by far their greatest strength was the ability to harness and use a power known as Mana. The power was amazing but not entirely in their favor, as it made them the subject of curiosity. It was believed their bones and flesh would transfer their magic ability to those that consumed them, so the greatest predator became prey in the eyes of the land. As they were slowly hunted and their numbers dwindled they retreated, living as quietly as they could in the dark recesses of the land. One mysterious night, to their surprise one of their brothers viciously attacked. Their attempts to stop him were in vain. In a frantic panic they scattered across the land. Alone in the wilderness they didn’t stand a chance. Only one remains. As the last survivor, he’s faced with the task of finding the others and rescuing them, or living a solitary life at the end of a race.
The game takes inspiration from old 6th generation console games that place an emphasis on exploration, platforming, and puzzle solving. Some of which are Jack and Daxter, Rayman 2, and the classic Legend of Zelda series. While the world is smaller and the puzzles simple, Nocveil still hopes to capture the same adventurous feeling these games gave us so many years ago.
This game has different environments to explore, enemies and obstacles to avoid and battle, small puzzles to solve, mini dungeons to explore, puzzle minigames, raptor racing minigames, and a final boss battle. Being a small scale game, it doesn't sound like much, but I want to make a quality game rather than a large bug riddled mess.
As you explore the game, you'll find areas to play a minigame and the reward for completing the minigame is a bone. These bones are used to unlock new areas and continue on your mission. New areas will need to be explored and have small puzzles to solve and enemies to defeat before you can find one of your lost brethren.
Funds raised by the kickstarter will go to improving the graphics, improving the models, custom music, custom promotional art, custom animations, physical products, graphic design, shipping, and licensing fees.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk involved with this project is the project's expansion. This project will no doubt be finished and released, but whether or not the new content planned is successfully integrated depends on my skills as a developer. My number one priory is very simple and that's making this game fun to play. I'm hoping a kickstarter will only increase its ability to deliver on that fun experience. Because I'm one man, it's a lot of work but I perform weekly backups in case of disaster and will always have something to deliver.
