About

The New Orleans Bookfair is in its 12th year of November rabble-rousing and includes scores of local authors, 'zine-makers, booksellers, artists, comics, activists and much more. In 2012 the Alternative Media Expo (created in 2003 as a Spring/Summer homage to the Bookfair) merged with it, adding more crafters, fashion and filmmakers. The Bookfair is always free to attend and open to all-ages.

We're launching this project to help fund this year's event--the costs of producing the event are higher than ever before, between venue rental, promotion and tables and equipment, we're looking at about a $3000 overhead. Table rental fees go toward that, but the Bookfair has reasonable table fees--just $35 for a full 8ft table, insanely cheap compared to other similar events. Many people actively making cool things in New Orleans passed through the Bookfair and/or Alternative Media Expo at some point over the past ten to twelve years, and cheap tables let burgeoning creators get an easier foothold.

The official Bookfair t-shirt was undoubtedly a hit last year. Happy Burbeck is the go-to artist for the Bookfair and she always knocks it out of the park. People loved last year's artwork so much we were sold out of most sizes by the halfway point of the Bookfair. We think people everywhere will dig this year's image (which will be revealed later in the week), and if we're funded more people will be guaranteed the size shirt they want while helping the Bookfair along--which is greatly appreciated!

Risks and challenges

The Bookfair will be held indoors, inside the warehouse of the Contemporary Arts Center, so weather is not a danger. We have experience mailing product, so delivery won't be a problem. Worst case scenario would be the t-shirts not being ready in time for the Bookfair. Our t-shirt printer has years of experience (and is a multiple-time exhibitor!), but if it happened we would take on the cost and process of shipping every shirt to pledged locals while updating our donors on our progress and information about what happened.

I Love the Bookfair to the Point I'd Pay to See Someone Embarrass Themselves Over It. Limited to 1 and 1 only. This donor gets the t-shirt, the variant postcard, their name listed as a Friend of the Bookfair, all shipped to them if they cannot attend the Bookfair. Whether the donor is in attendance or not, this reward triggers the Bookfair Dance. It will be posted for posterity on the Bookfair's website, with the donor thanked in the credits and owner of first dibs posting the official video to their preferred social media outlet.
