We will use the money to turn a part of the ceiling into a lightbox. We will then work with local groups to create artworks for the lightbox. That might be a print on the surface or it might use the space above the ceiling to create shadows and mobiles that provide a dynamic artwork.
Elsewhere we will replace panels with "whiteboard" ceiling for short term Rolf Harris style artworks to use this newly created artspace.
Looking Up in New X is proud to be featured on the RSA curated area on Kickstarter, which selects the best new ideas to help tackle social problems that its 27,000 Fellows are looking to deliver. I’m an RSA Fellow and have been selected to be a part of this. Click here to see more RSA-backed projects and find out more about the RSA.
Since it opened in 2011, New Cross Learning has quickly developed into a vibrant community hub. Locals go there for books of course, but also for computer access, streetdance, poetry group, baby bounce, community meetings, training sessions, Chinese dragon making workshops...
The front of the building got a great facelift (thanks RSA Catalyst and The Funding Network) in 2012 with a participatory artwork that marked the beginning of community ownership and involvement.
Now we want to do something about the inside.
New Cross doesn't have a public art space so we are raising money to make one. New Cross Learning has 300 sq metres of ceiling just waiting for transformation. Enough downcast acquiescence, people in New Cross are ready to LOOK UP and improve their public spaces for themselves.
With this funding we will create a lightbox installation for the ceiling. Then run workshops and work with local groups to create multimedia artworks that change every six months. Each one will involve local artists, school children, community groups or Goldsmiths students. We will create something beautiful and inspiring led by local artist Patricio Forrester who set up Artmongers to creatively reshape the way we interact with public spaces (think Deptford Marbles, His n Hers, cowbins, Fabric of Society, the Brockley Key...)
Our S -T - R - E - T - C - H targets
- an additional £1000 will allow us to replace missing / broken / horrible ceiling panels with wipe clean ones for occasional whiteboard ceiling art.
- an additional £3k will allow us to make this lightbox as big as the one in the video (current budget is for 4 panels)
- and another £4k means we can to do two lightboxes - one to welcome people arriving in the space and one in the activity space / children's library area.

Risks and challenges
New X ING is all about people working together. That brings challenges to make sure enough people feel engaged, but our experience with the New X ING Relay (street festival), 1000 Sunflowers project and the great team of volunteers that New Cross Learning has created and nurtured makes this less of a risk.
On the technical side we have a great electrician who agrees with the purpose of New Cross Learning and will make sure we can do this as cost effectively as possible.
We have put our time and effort into these projects because we believe in people getting involved - with each other, with their community, with making things better. The 1000 Sunflowers aren't just about gardening, they're about planting seeds of belief in each other and in the possibility of change. Yes it's not easy to get together a rota of waterers and its disheartening when some of the sunflowers were vandalised or stolen, but there are lots of positives too. Every time we make something happen, we connect more people and more things become possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
