      Fellow backers,

Please note that the BBB may be interested in resolving any issues you may have with Playdek. They currently have not attempted to resolve very many complaints.

We need an accounting of what you developed for the game. Why is it that orbit has very little assets in which to work from and that they are going to have to start the game "from scratch"? It sounds like you took investors money and spent it on things it wasn't meant for.

    3. Missing avatar

      Kristen Plescow on

I have no qualms with Little Orbit and I wish them the best. This project isn't their fault — the fact they felt they needed to start from scratch is telling.

I know you're bound to have talented, honest people working for you... but the saying goes: "Once bitten, twice shy." I'll be avoiding your games and company as much as possible.

When you say "we are sorry that we were unable to complete it for you", do you mean "we took your money and we gave you literally nothing in return, so tough shit"?

      Thought so.

Playdek needs to provide a full accounting of the funds raised. While a finished product is never a guarantee, LittleOrbit has found none of the assets to be usable moving forward. This begs the question as to where did the funds go if nothing created was usable? Was anything created? Was the money spend negligently? If not how was it spent? You can't just take in funds and not attempt to produce the product, that is fraud. The backers need information to show it was not fraud, if that can't be provided it must be assumed that fraud did occur.

    6. Steve on

If this new company has the "same passion" for the project, then get ready for another 5 years of shitshow.

    7. Steve on

Good riddance you scamming pieces of shit.

While I share many sentiments about Playdek I do want to say one thing to them:

Whatever I feel about your company's work ethic and lack of accountability on this project I really do love Lords of Waterdeep and I don't want to lose it when iOS 11 comes out.

    9. Missing avatar

The money is already spent, so I'll see what this other company does. I'll also give them massive props for picking up such a toxic project to try and salvage it.

By now the soundtrack from Sakimoto should be done and available, right? Especially since the digital soundtrack was supposed to be a digital reward. And I mean if you can't release the game at least release the OST? Unless Sakimoto actually did nothing.

    11. Missing avatar

      gaherisx on

So where are the musics from Sakimoto and artworks from Yoshida excatly? I get Matsuno did the story but did we have any proofs Sakimoto and Yoshida actually did anything for the game at all? Did they even sign a contract? Maybe I missed that stuff in the updates , I don't know, but so far to me the campaign looks more like a scam than anything else. Bait people to back a project based on big names of the video game industry without anything in return IS scam.

    12. David De Ost on

Chris J Capel, you're the one who's in the wrong, friend. As a Kickstarter backer, you ARE entitled to something. It's true that you aren't entitled to a finished product, but you ARE entitled to the ethical use of the funds you've provided. You are entitled to developer transparency and honesty. And lastly, you most certainly are entitled to the developer putting in every reasonable effort into creating the product.

I agree that Kickstarter is an investment, and that the risks inherent to an investment must be accepted for what they are, but if you think that somehow discharges the developer from acting in an ethical and honest fashion, then you're wrong. It's good to give a developer credit and trust, but it's a whole other thing to be an apologetic rube. You say, "if you don't get the game, they tried", and yes, that would be appropriate if they had actually tried instead of taking our money and investing it in all sorts of mobile junk to line their own pockets.

Playdek has lied, kept its backers in the dark, and deliberately and knowingly misappropriated funds. I know it's hard to admit to oneself that you've been duped, but in this case, it's very clear, so Playdek doesn't deserve your defense of their practices.

That said, that another company will no produce the game is the best news we could have possibly had, because no one can possibly do any worse than Playdek has done up 'til now. So good luck, Little Orbit, and lets hope you'll be a lot more ethical than Playdek has been.

    13. Chris J Capel on

This is the nature of Kickstarter everyone: it's not a promise, it's a donation. If you get the game, brilliant. If not, they tried. YOU'RE NOT ENTITLED TO ANYTHING. So stop being rude about it, remember that games aren't created out of fun and fairy dust and actually take hard work and long hours, and also remember THAT YOU ARE STILL GETTING UNSUNG STORY and very probably it will be closer to FF Tactics now than it was before.

Having said all that, Playdek - you clearly made a LOT of mistakes during Unsung Story's development. To have all your work thrown out must be hard, but at the same time that does show just how completely you got this game - your own idea! - wrong. I don't think you're frauds, but I do feel you advertised something you couldn't - or didn't want to - deliver. Which is, basically, a new spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics. Single-player. If you were ever working on something that wasn't like that, then you did wrong.

Oh well. You messed up. It happens. And I think you've learned from this mistake.

    14. Manuel Kroeber on

Unfortunate, but I already saw it comming after all that time. Still, there is no use to be so utterly rude in the comments. You all accepted when pledging that the money can be lost for good, they are not obliged to refund if they actually tried developing the game. It's sad but whatever.

    15. Michaeljack on

Fuck off Playdek and don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out

    16. Nils Lanthemann on

ai can't think of more than "fuck you" at this point

I want my money back, these guys are damn frauds!

    22. Ramon on

The most frustating part of this is the feelling of powerless, we just cant do anything. We cant ask for the money back, we cant sue them, we cant even have a clear anscer to what really happened. Crowdfunding must evolve to prevent this kind of thing happens, and so Kickstarter.

    23. Missing avatar

      David Jarrard on

Best news this kickstarter has seen since it was announced to have met it's funding goal. Please let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

    24. Josh Bender

You are the reason I don't back video game Kickstarters anymore.

    25. TyDeL

Definitely a big disappointment. I never back video games, but I had a lot of faith in Playdek as a content creator of amazing apps. I wouldn't have backed a developer that I know nothing about.

      2 of them were failures.

Gotta say now that I'm never funding pre-development or early access games ever again.

    28. JK Clark on

Lol! This is now officially a LEGENDARY KICKSTARTER!! Truly, the world will never forget this epic shitshow.

And these comments? Obviously everyone has chosen to use humor to deal with the pain. I salute you all, and I agree with your sentiments, from "Okay." to "Fuck you, and everyone you've ever loved.". What a rollercoaster!

Who didn't see this coming after the "we are working on another game" fiasco? I'm disappointed but only because I expected better from Playdek when I originally supported them. As things progressed, or didn't, I realized that was a mistake.

    30. Chris Adamson on

Feels like we're waiting for another shoe to drop here, with this news coming totally out of the blue. I had expected the next update to be Playdek's bankruptcy filing, but maybe what we'll hear next is that they're being acquired and their new owners insisted that the liabilities of the Unsung Story fiasco not be part of the deal.

Anyways, good bye and good riddance, Playdek. Maybe update your iOS apps to 64-bit before you turn the lights out, but even that's too much to expect from this bunch of frauds.

    31. Biofrost2001 on

What a bunch of frauds. I Will NEVER buy anything from this shitty company again.
Taking our money making promises qbd deliver NOTHING!

    32. Will O'Neill

They've got the same passion as you? Man, I hope not.

    33. Alex Crast on

Huh, is this sort of business dealing allowed within the Kickstarter TOS? I was not aware that you could run a Kickstarter, collect the money, then sell your project off to a third party, I get the feeling that many more people would be doing this.

    34. Dave, Shadowrunner on

See ya Playdek. Needless to say I will never ever pay for one of your games in the future.

    35. Derrick Smith on

I agree with everyone else. DevHell or high-water there better be something that comes out of this or someone needs to pay. This project has been in limbo for far too long to think that the backers would be happy with this type of response. Cash grab and run are all we are seeing here. I hope someone does an article on this on Kotaku.

    36. BigEarl19 on

Little Orbit is just a publisher, so it this game might not even have a development team anymore (if it had one in the first place). Looks like Little Orbit typically has Torus Games as the developer for their games, but neither company appears to have done anything since 2015.

I'd also like to point out that if they sold the rights, not only did they take our money and run, but they also made MORE money selling the rights. Does this feel illegal to anyone else? I'd be interested in a lawyers take on this... a class action lawsuit would be a fantastic end to this terrible "project".

    37. Missing avatar

      Brandon on

Can we get refunds now. These new people only make crappy license games. I doubt they will be able to do what you promised.

    38. Missing avatar

      fabricated on

their website has been directed to a mostly blank wordpress site that was setup and is "in progress" since last year. Considering they mentioned that they put the game on hold to finish other games to make the money to let them finish the original game- I'd say this effort didn't really pan out.

      Last facebook update was March.

My guess: The company is donezo. Expect a name change, or liquidation, or acquirement, or just them simply vanishing off the face of the earth.

      Thems the risks though.

    39. Soo Kim on

So you basically took the money and peaced out on us. I see how it is, I will make sure people I know about Playdek and their scummy businesses. I was willing to see what happens but i guess I was wrong.

    40. Hurley

If you actually had any integrity you would offer refunds. But no, even that small thing that is beyond you.

    41. Aargh on

No, you know what? Fuck polite company. Fuck "be respectful and considerate."

Fuck you Playdek, fuck your toying with your fans and supporters, fuck how this whole project has been handled, fuck every single bullshit update, fuck buying time again and again with zero progress, fuck every single person working at Playdek, I'm sure a couple of you are actually halfway decent human beings but still fuck you. Fuck the new game you're working on, undoubtedly with the funds we gave you to make THIS game. Fuck me for keeping a tiny spark of hope that maybe some day Unsung Story would be completed. Fuck me for assuming you had a shred of professional pride and integrity. Fuck me for assuming you'd actually give a shit about your dream project. Fuck me for putting my faith in an unproven company with an exciting idea.

I'm not going to ask for a refund because that money is gone anyway, I've come to terms with that a long time ago. I just need a fucking moment to vent after more than three years of dealing with your deception. Fuck you.

    42. ET on

Prettttty sure their last 40 or so updates were pre-written before the campaign even ended and their involvement ended years ago.

    43. Markytheoz on

      You fucking scum

    44. Andrew-David

    45. Peter Shafer on

So did you dump the game? Were the rights sold? Were you acquired? I could live with supporting this project with playdek, even if it didn't come to fruition. You win some, you lose some, and I wanted to support the possibility of this coming together the way it was pitched. But just up and leaving it without more of an explanation really feels unfair to backers. I really feel it would have been more respectful to just end the project rather than handle it like this.

    46. Danger Van Gorder on

I feel I've gotten my money's worth for watching this incomparable train wreck and watching the misdirection spool out over the years.

Guys, never launch any effort ever again.

You have no shame...what a bunch of fraudulent thieves...
