Game Development Update

Dear Unsung Backers,

There has been another delay in reporting to you since our last development update, and we apologize for that. Our continued intention is to make a great game, and get Unsung Story to development completion and released to you and the gaming public. During the last few months we have had some development setbacks that are affecting our timeline and progress on the game, while also affecting what we need to do in the immediate future as a company.

After we posted our latest development progress, we unfortunately lost a few key staff members that were part of Unsung Story development, and that has had an impact on any progress since then, as well as our product focus. We now have one internal team capable of working on a single project, and for the financial strength of the company we need to focus on a few products in the near term that have the ability to get to a retail release before Unsung Story is able to. While this is a difficult choice to make, it is one we need to do for the ongoing financial health of the company. For Unsung Story, we will explore options for outside development help, and will look to see if we are able to bring on an outside team that can assist us in furthering development. While we aren’t assured this will come to fruition, we do want to make sure that we are exploring any options at hand that can make progress on the game.

While the development goals that were spelled out in the previous update remain intact for now, the release window of those goals is affected, and at this time we do not have an update as to what the new release window for development rollout will be. This will be affected by the ability and timing of any outside support, as well as when the single internal team is able to get back onto Unsung development, and when we do know, we will update you all. As we pursue this direction, we will refine the release timeline as soon as we are able to. With the loss of that staff, and without having any new progress to share since the last update, we felt we needed to sort through what options and directions we had available before we updated you on the current status, but again do apologize for the lack of recent updates. We will get back to you as soon as we can with any progress and status update. Thanks.

      Requesting a refund.

      Backer #12,254, at $50.

    2. LadyAth on February 18, 2016

Unlike many others, I am going to keep faith that Unsung will eventually be released. Other projects I have backed on KS are over 2 years late. Just a request: continue with updates. Even small progress milestones is better than months of silence. All the best for you guys - I really hope you get the opportunity to turn the boat around.

Kickstarter... or how to lose 1000s of dollars. Refund would be awesome but who are we kidding.

I put in a good amount originally to get all the bonus content, then last minute added more after the end of the Kickstarter to make sure I got all the extras. Now with this project going downhill quickly and rewards are seemingly never going to appear, I would like a refund. If it was a small amount I probably wouldn't care but with my larger amount and the way Playdek is handling things, I would definitely like the money back.

I hope they get taken to the courts, at the very least I know I won't get anything back but I would feel better knowing that will prevent people from being scammed in the future by them.

Playdek is officially on my s-list.

I wonder if Yasumi Matsuno is even part of this project anymore.... Who exactly was let go? Some of the big names in tactics is what brought me here. This company is a joke. I really feel for those of you who pledged big money on this.

Sorry, we don't care for your disgusting company anymore. Its obvious that you took the money and misappropriated, you've treated your backers like dirt, and you hope we lay down and do nothing.

Already filed a complaint with my State's AG, you guys no longer deserve to be in business.

This is a joke of a update. All they repeated in saying is that they are sorry for the lack of updates and that they NOW dont have the man power because of lack of management with the money they got on KS. They are hoping that we just forget about it and dont ask for the game so they dont have to worry about paying us back or making it. Did anyone else notice they still didnt say how far they are. It is way passed due for the game. Mighty number 9 is being pushed back also but guess what they know how to keep everyone in the loop on updates. What a joke. I would love to have my refund but i dont think i will be seeing it. They are also most likely not talk to us anymore for another quarter of a year. That update will say " well we fucked up and we didnt really know how to make a game in the first place, but dont worry its coming." lol fuck playdek

I am very sorry to hear this, running out of funds is the worst experience to go through with a company. I can understand if this is what ultimately lead to key members leaving or rather having to leave, because they couldn't accept cuts in payment due to the financial situation.

I would love to see this project come to completion, but after such grave news I don't have much faith left. As I'm committed with almost 300 US$ it's also not something I can simply shrug off and ignore, so in case the promised rewards cannot be delivered and the option is given. I hereby formally request a refund.
      Sorry for this Playdek

    17. Geomancer on February 11, 2016

      @Rob

To make a record of it.

They haven't offered refunds. Actually, the opposite, they refuse to give one. The reason is obvious, they already spent it on other projects and have no cash to refund in the first place.

So while we'll never get our money back, that still doesn't mean Playdek shouldn't be punished for fraud. By every legal definition soliciting money to make product A, but spending it on product B, and never delivering product A is clear cut fraud. If a lawsuit by a state's (or multiple states) AG causes Playdek to go out of business, fine, so be it. Their management are frankly criminals. If they could not afford to make the game with the money given, they should of refunded us long ago or asked for the appropriate amount of money in the first place. Not flat out lied to us for 2 years running.

$660,126 plus whatever they get on paypal and there is quite literally NOTHING to show for it.

It looks like they are ditching everything else but GMT's Twilight Struggle (though that is heavily delayed too, which is sad, because generally GMT does fantastic work in the cardboard world). This is sort of disgusting.

Can we at least get a copy of Twilight Struggle instead, as it seems our funds have gone to development of that instead of this? If not can I just get a refund? It was only 20 bucks, but basically Playdek has stolen 660k from people to put toward god knows what. Heck, even the videos they released look like they were tossed together over a few hours using Unity assets.

I haven't backed a ton, but everything else I have backed has been delivered. Lots late, but that's ok (I waited a year or more in some cases), because there was good communication regarding what they were up to.

We get, "sorry guys, it's late, things happened." Then, "it's going to be later, by the way there's lots of pvp in it now." Followed by, "We're basically done and can't promise we'll ever look at it again."

I basically feel they haven't worked on anything in the game aside from the rough outline and framework stuff that was given to them.

Sorry about the difficulties but fret not because you're in luck, Playdek! It turns out Unsung Story was fully funded up front so you should have more than enough money to work on that game alongside another one. The financial health of Unsung Story was secured from the start so you won't need to put it off any longer. Congratulations! Looking forward to receiving the game in July 2015!

    22. Dave, Shadowrunner on February 10, 2016

Asking for a refund is absolutely pointless. Playdek has made it clear they won't do this. What you can do, if you live in the USA, is file a formal complaint with your Attorney General.
Find your attorney general by state here. http://www.naag.org/naag/attorneys-general/whos-my-ag.php Click on their picture and then you'll have a link to their website. Once there. file a complaint explaining how Playdek comitted internet fraud and clearly did not use KS money to develop the game as promised.

Truthfully, we are unlikely to see our money again, nor the game or other promised rewards. However, I believe they should be held responsible for their gross mismanagement / misuse of funds we contributed... (i.e., internet fraud). Playdek should not be allowed to stay in business making other games because of funds we gave them for Unsung Story.

Please file a complaint with your attorney general's office. This is especially important if you live in California (where Playdek is based) or Washington state (whose AG has previously taken legal action against fradulent Kickstarter developers).

    24. Space Monkey on February 9, 2016

I've contacted them to formally ask for a refund too. And I also think that what was done with this project is clearly outside of trying to develop the game in good faith and was just a fraudulent way to inject money in their studio.

    25. Eminus Sleepus on February 9, 2016

hi playdeck, it would be right to give refunds to us since it is clear that the money was not 100% used for this project.

    26. Lienn on February 9, 2016

Well, that was unfortunate. IMO this kind of situation is even more demoralizing than when a campaign actually fail being funded.

    27. Keith Walton on February 9, 2016

I ended up on Playdek's website today by accidentally clicking the wrong thing in a game I already own by them. Not only was it a slap in the face to see Unsung Story still prominently displayed on their home page, but it doesn't look like anything there has even been touched since 2013. All the News and information on their website is 3 years old, which is apparently when they stopped caring.

For what it's worth, both as a reminder to Playdek and also to the people who are condemning Kickstarter at large as a failed platform:

FTL, Risk of Rain, Pillars of Eternity, Broken Age, Wasteland 2, Elite Dangerous, HEX, Chaos Reborn, Shadowrun Returns, Massive Chalice, Dreamfall Chapters, Divinity Original Sin, The Banner Saga, Satellite Reign, Consortium, Grim Dawn, Republique, Armello, Battle Worlds Kronos, Jotun, Skyshine's Bedlam, Darkest Dungeon, Quest for Infamy, Sunless Sea, Xenonauts, The Fall, Blade Symphony, Tabletop Simulator, Mercenary Kings, Windforge, Dead State, Octodad, Legend of Dungeon...

Many, many, MANY teams have succeeded in making games through Kickstarter and delivering good, sometimes great, products to their backers for the money they pledged. This is a failure of a team. Not an indictment of a system.

    33. Eric Leslie on February 9, 2016

I can appreciate why people are asking for a refund, but guys, that money is long gone. You *might* be able to get your pledge back if somebody manages to put the time and effort (and additional money) into taking them to court and making them dissolve the company and sell off physical assets, but if they're looking to make other smaller games to sell in order to keep funding this one, the money isn't there to give refunds or do anything else.

For those of us in at $20, the effort required probably just isn't worth it. (I'd be curious to hear from the people who pledged at much, much higher levels, though.) It certainly doesn't seem like they've been good stewards of our money, but you can't get back something that isn't there anymore.$20 over 2 years is a pretty small gamble to have lost.

Since this is an official update to say that development on the game has halted, i'd like to officially ask for my refund now, as you are no longer filling your end of the kickstarter contract or planning to release any form of your promise in the foreseeable future.

Backing this project meant that the project would get released sometime in the future, and as i see it, you are unable to do that in any form, lacking money, skills, manpower and commitment.

I understand you are a company that needs to make profit, but don't spin words to legally save yourself, you have no intention of finishing this project, that much is obvious.

I wish you the best of luck Playdek. Despite what many of us (understandably) disgruntled backers have said, I've always felt like your team has been upfront and honest about the progress of this project. I see nothing to imply to me that my meager $20 pledge was mismanaged. For this, I thank you, and ask only for your continued forthrightness.

As a game developer myself, I'm well acquainted with the challenges involved in bringing a project this ambitious to the light of day. Exceeded timelines and budgets are an unfortunately frequent reality in this industry where designers' dreams and consumers' expectations are always growing. This must be a difficult time for the entire team, made no easier by the onslaught of messages by disappointed fans. Just keep in mind that it is our passion for this project that causes us all to voice our thoughts.

No doubt the entirety of Playdek shares the same passion for Unsung Story as your fans and backers. Not to mention your team's investment, attachment, and self-sacrifice over these last two years. I'm confident you guys will do whatever it takes to see this project through to completion. I will look forward to playing the game, whenever that happens to be. Do what you have to do, and hang in there!

    47. Justin Meader on February 8, 2016

This news is extremely disheartening, but not unexpected. I hope Playdek is able to get the studio back on its feet.

My problem isn't even with the money I invested – I don't want it back. What I want is the product I backed, and I hope someday to get it. In the interim, I do feel like it is the responsibility of Playdek to post details on how our money was spent. It's only fair that I know where my investment went.

Oh, you may as well tell the truth and admit this project isn't -happening-. It isn't "delayed." I'd like to join my voice to the others requesting a refund, and definitely agree that a class-action suit would be appropriate-- it seems clear that the money we raised for you for this project got funneled straight into unrelated mobile development, and that is, yes, fraud.
