About this project
“The Bugs” is a cooperative card game designed for kids that adults will also enjoy. We have created several ways to play that will help the youngest discover the game while learning (3+). Later, they’ll be able to enjoy the game even more by including new cards and more challenging rules.
While they play and cooperate, they will also learn the basics of programming.
Why we need you !
Our mission is to inspire the creators of tomorrow. Coding is a skill that helps develop creativity, much like reading, writing and math. More and more schools teach children programming concepts starting as early as the age of 6. It’s the literacy of the 21st century.
We started developing prototypes to help the kids discover programming a year ago. We have been searching for a simple, fun, cooperative and affordable tool that will ease the first contact with programming to build confidence. “The Bugs” is what we have discovered.
We are ready to start the manufacturing process, we need 1000 orders to trigger production. That’s why we are here on Kickstarter.
What kids, teachers and gamers say...
About the game
The Bugs are small robots living on a little planet. They live in harmony with their environment and they have created an energy network around their planet. Sometimes, some of the robots have problems and they don’t work as expected. These are the Buggy robots. They need you to repair them.
You can play with up to 4 players in a cooperative mode. You have to catch the Buggy robot (the red one) as a team. To do so, you have to create an energy network around it.
Here is an excerpt from a game with 5 year old kids.
Different game modes (for all ages, starting at 3)
We want the kids to play with the game for hours. We want them to have fun for years. We have different cards (for construction, programming, robots) and different levels for each card (white, yellow, orange). We have created four mini-games with increasing difficulty.

The Bugs : going further...
You can also meet the universe of Bugs on an application (PC, Mac, iOS, Android). With this, you can build an endless world and go further into programming concepts. This application will be available in October 2016. If you support us on Kickstarter today, you will be part of our community of early testers ! More than tester, you will help us improve our video game as soon as June. Here is an excerpt from our prototype :
What pedagogy to discover programming ?
We created this card game to discover programming concepts step by step, beginning with the creation of a simple sequence. We followed the Constructionism programming concepts, developped by Papert (father of the Logo computer language which helped a lot of children to discover programming in the 80’s). This pedagogy advocates learning by trial and error, and also testing. That is why, in our game, the child begins with something he knows (a domino/Lego-like construction game). Then, he sees a robot moving forward thanks to programming instructions. Finally, he will program a robot to go faster.
We created a cooperative and tangible game because it is a good way to unite people around a shared goal. So, the acquisition of a new skill is made easy.
We also developed an application to go further into programming and to create situations where programming robots make sense (for example by creating a perpetual motion circuit).
What are the programming concepts addressed ?
Programming is a vast topic. There are imperative programming, procedural programming, object oriented programming, functional programming... “The Bugs” uses a few concepts of imperative programming and computer science:
- simple sequences of instructions : Moving, Turning Left, Turning Right. We teach to put them in the right order.
- parameters for instructions : Move 2, 3 or 4 squares
- random numbers : the dice allows us to include random parameters to the instructions
- parallel executions : we can move two different robots at the same time, with the same instructions
We wish to go further into programming concepts with our future products ( physic and virtual ), but we would like to do it step by step so children come to like this skill.
The team is made up of 4 people :
- NICOLAS (34 years old) : the founder of Magik Square, he is the soul of this project born during his playtime with his son Victor, and his wife, Isabelle ( school teacher ).
- JIMMY (23 years old) : graphic designer and 2D animator, he is the Bugs universe’s father.
- BENOIT (33 years old) : user experience designer, he makes you want to discover the world of Bugs, and anticipates your expectations !
- CHRISTOPHE (35 years old) : leader of business functions and support ( administrative, finance and human ressources ) of the project, he coordinates everything to ship the product to you, right on time.

Risks and challenges
The game design is done. But we consider it 80% done because we would like to include the feedback from the community. We have already validated our partners for the production part. We use simple and standard technologies that give us confidence in our planning forecast.
The major risk is on international deliveries. That's why we have added a one month buffer (September) for the expected delivery date.
For the application, there is a risk of delay for the beta version (expected in June). That's why we are already doing some tests with our alpha on several devices. We have tested on PC, Mac, Android and iOS. There is no major issue right now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
