About this project
Amplio is the portable, compact sound amplifier for your smartphone that evokes the timeless aesthetics of classic radios, but does not need wires, batteries or electricity.
Remember the good old days when we listened to the radio while we were busy doing other things? We do too, so we asked ourselves, how can we bring back those magic moments?
The console radio used to be the centerpiece of household entertainment. Nowadays that spot is taken by the smartphone. While this device came into our lives with a lot of magic new features, it also lost some charm along the way: the ability to play your music loud and clear, anywhere, for you and the ones around you, and the warmth of a device that's wonderfully crafted out of natural materials enclosed in a beautiful shape. The tiny speakers of our smartphones are not as powerful as we'd like them to be, and wireless speakers are not always as portable as they promise, and worse, they further our dependence on electricity by requiring batteries. That's why we thought, why not build a better device? And we did. We call it Amplio: a portable, non-electric, dead simple amplifier for the active music listener made of bamboo.
Amplio is fast and easy to use. Just pick your favourite music, place your smartphone into the top docking slot and you're ready to go. That's it, enjoy your music loud and clear. No settings, no buttons or cables.
When we designed Amplio we wanted to get the best possible sound from a small, easy to use, portable device. Amplio is made from two main sections, an amplifying acoustic chamber that not only increases the volume of your smartphones' speakers but also adds a stereo effect so that your music comes alive. The second section of the Amplio is the universal dock for all smartphones with one or two speakers on the bottom edge. These two sections stick together perfectly thanks to tiny strong magnets.
The problem with all normal phone accessories is that they need... well, electricity. They need to be charged, plugged, waited for, and just when you need them they don't work. With Amplio you'll never have any of these issues because all it needs is your smartphone.
We love to work with natural sustainable materials and specially with wood and bamboo. The problem with most of the gadgets nowadays is that they're made from non-recyclable materials, have complicated parts made from many different materials, have a short lifespan and sooner or later add to a growing landfill. We don't want to be part of the problem so we made Amplio from bamboo, an impressive plant known for growing faster than trees and used in many cultures for traditional musical instruments.
We have an active lifestyle and we bet you do too. Nowadays we're on the go more than ever, we're working in cafes, on campus, switching between home and office, busy at the gym or just enjoying nature. Wherever you go, Amplio can go too, because it's compact and light.
Although you don't need electricity for Amplio, your phone does, and that might be an issue if you want to listen to your music for countless hours. With Amplio you don't need to worry about your phone's battery because you can use it while your phone is plugged in to its charging cable while at home, or to an external power supply when you're on the go.
Amplio is designed to last and that's reflected in its universal dock. You'll change your phone next year? No worries, you can keep using Amplio for as long as you want as its construction fits many smartphones and charging cables.
We love and are inspired by minimalist classic designs that retain a certain value and quality even a few decades later. We've tried to catch that essence in Amplio, taking the elements that define the best radios and bringing them into a simple, modern, desirable object.
To bring Amplio to life we will invest a lot of time, work and materials. Backing us means we will be able to acquire new tools to speed up the production process, purchase materials in large quantities and at a cheaper rate, set up a production line managed entirely by us, and depending on your support we can develop more Amplio modules so that a larger range of Smartphones can work with it. We’re also aiming to make one for iPads but reaching this higher goal depends entirely on you.
Amplio is small enough to fit easily in your bag. It measures 4.92 x 2.44 x 2.75 inches or 12.5 x 6.2 x 7 centimeters (LxWxH) and weighs 0.68 pounds or 310 grams.
Amplio is made with love by a small team from Rotterdam, the Netherlands formed by Vlad Butucariu and Irina Shapiro. We have a passion for sustainable and ergonomic design while aiming to bring to life desirable, long lasting and fun to use products. We also like to call ourselves 'designers from below sea level', because well… we are living below sea level and it sounds pretty cool. One of our latest products is the Flio Stand. Have a look, you might like it too!
Risks and challenges
We've been working on Amplio for half a year already and while we've had a few obstacles, now we're close to bringing the product to life. We've secured the contacts with our material suppliers, we know where to get the tools and equipment we need for cutting and polishing, and last but not least, we've determined our packaging and shipping options. All these together with our past experience in handling production will minimize the risks and make sure we'll be on track. All we need right now is your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes it does, but it depends very much by how thick is your phone while having the case. Out of the box Amplio has the docking space wide of 10mm (0,39 inch) and long of 80mm (3,15 inch).
So if your phone is thinner than 10mm (0,39 inch) should work just fine.
If your phone is thicker, then just let us know and we can easily create an adaptor layer to extend the docking space with 3-5mm extra for bulky cases. After all that's why we built Amplio with modularity in mind :)
