An additional fermenter for lagers at a new craft brewery in Northern Virginia.
Penultimate Goal: $25,000!
Matt put his beard on the line and promised to cut it into any shape voted on by the backers if we reached $25k. He is doing a jig thinking his beard is safe. We have just over 24 hours to prove him wrong. If you haven't backed yet, be sure to do so now, and if you have backed please tell your friends.
The extra money will be used to buy a second under counter refrigerator so we can set up a second serving area in the tasting room and buy Big Ass Fans (actual brand name, how cool?) for the tasting room and the production room.
Who we are
Forge Brew Works is a 10 barrel production brewery opening this summer in Alexandria, Virginia. Forge will focus on a few beer recipes made with premium ingredients and executed with passion and precision. The opening brews will be a single hop IPA, a Belgian Pale Ale, a Roggenbier, an Abbey Ale, an Oatmeal Stout, and a Petite Saison.
While there are numerous styles of Belgian and German ales planned, we would love to add lagers to the line-up. The problem is lagers take about three times longer than ales to ferment. That is where you come in. With your help we can purchase an additional fermenter and add Pilsners, dopplebocks, and other lagers to our slate of beers.
Remember all our supporters will be added to our Founders List. At least twice a year you will be invited to special events like holiday parties, launch of seasonal brews, and notified of specials available only at the brewery like tastings of experimental flavors.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the brewery later this year.
We have entered negotiations for a space at 8532 Terminal Rd. We are very excited because the space is nearly twice as large as we initially thought we would have and there is a natural division for the tasting room that will allow us to make it even more awesome than originally planned.
Stretch Goal #8 - $25,000
Wow, your early support has blown us away. Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Please continue to tell everyone you know about our project and encourage them to donate as well. As a thank-you for all the community support, especially the local homebrewers, we are going to put together an e-book with both extract and all grain versions of the recipes. Every $1000 more we get we'll add a recipe to the book, up to all 6 at $16,000. After this, we'll have the $17,000 goal reward with ALL BACKERS NAMES on a plaque that will hang in the brewery. Expect those to deliver around the same time as all the other merchandise. This will all go towards our goal of getting an automatic keg filler, which would make Matt a VERY happy brewer.
The way the goals work will be the following:
Stretch Goal #1 - $11,000 - One Recipe for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #2 - $12,000 - Two Recipes for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #3 - $13,000 - Three Recipes for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #4 - $14,000 - Four Recipes for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #5 - $15,000 - Five Recipes for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #6 - $16,000 - ALL Recipes for home use - UNLOCKED!
Stretch Goal #7 - $17,000 - Every backers name on a plaque that will hang in the brewery! - UNLOCKED!
Now if we get past this set of goals, what happens? Matt said he is willing to shave his beard into whatever shape is voted on by the backers at $25,000. Want to see Wolverine? We can do that. Civil war chic? WE CAN DO THAT! SHAVE IT ALL? Well, Matt's mom will have to pony up now won't she?
Penultimate Goal (#8) - $25,000 - Vote on whether Matt should shave the beard and if so what shape should it be. Also, everyone who backed $10 or more will receive a keychain bottle opener. The extra money will let us buy an extra fridge and Big Ass Fans for the tasting and production rooms.
What is the Brauler and Why is it awesome?
I just wanted people to understand why I'm so incredibly excited about the 64 oz Brauler growler that we're using. It is a stainless steel, wide mouth growler that doesn't need a tube to fill. It has a nice screw top cap that holds the fizz for quite some time, and later on there is going to be an optional cap, and I can't stress this enough, THAT YOU CAN RECARB THE GROWLER WITH. This is so incredibly cool that I can't not share it with you all. While the cap won't come with our rewards, we will carry it at the brewery and if you are not local I have no problems shipping you a cap if you want to buy one later on. I'm going to see them in person at CBC this month, so I'll update you guys on the status of the optional cap itself after the official unveiling.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest challenge is the fact that breweries are heavily regulated at both the state and federal level. In addition to the normal business licenses and permits required of everyone in Virginia, we also must meet the requirements of Federal TTB (formerly ATF) and the ABC of Virginia. In the end these extra licenses just come down to time. After we submit the paperwork we have virtually no control over how long it takes for approval.
We are considering 3 site locations at the moment. Our favorites are on Eisenhower Ave about a block from the Van Dorn metro. A second location is in the Fleet Drive area, which is located in the Fairfax County portion of Alexandria. A third set of locations are in the Newington Industrial Parks. Those are technically in Lorton, but still have easy access from I-95.
We are committed to finding a space in Alexandria, however, there is very little space in our target area that is already zoned to our needs. As soon as we settle on a space we send out a project update to let everyone know.
