Mark has been working with John Fleskes at Flesk Publications since 2005 to bring you the finest collections of his art. Their combined efforts have resulted in 12 books published by Flesk. These include Mark's art book collections Various Drawings (volumes 1-5) and Carbon (volumes 1-2). More recently Mark completed Storms at Sea, an illustrated novella, also published by Flesk. Perhaps most significantly, he created the speculative comics series Xenozoic Tales, to which he has now returned. He has illustrated a collection of Robert E. Howard’s Conan of Cimmeria and provides the scripts for the comics strip Prince Valiant.
Your support for Carbon 3 directly helps Mark to continue working on the new Xenozoic adventure.
Trade Paperback Book
This trade edition of Carbon 3 by Mark Schultz is a 56 page, 9 x 12 inch paperback art book with two gatefolds. Over 60 images are included.
Deluxe Signed Hardcover Book
This deluxe hardcover version of Carbon 3 comes with a premium binding and jacket. In addition, a unique page with a piece of art exclusive to this edition will be printed and bound into the book and signed by Mark Schultz. This edition is limited to 600 copies and will only be available direct from Flesk. (Note: I incorrectly specified 500 copies in the rewards tiers. I should have noted 600 copies to match the Carbon 1 and Carbon 2 limited hardcovers. The book is limited to 600 copies so that all of our previous Carbon collectors can have the full set. Sorry for the mix up! --John)
The challenge for any artist with a career that extends over four decades is to stay fresh while growing and developing within the territory he has staked for himself. In these pages of Carbon 3, Mark Schultz rises to that challenge, showing significant growth in his exploration of technique, subject matter and story elements. Schultz says he’s still learning, still working to refine his craft, and each new work is the result of an intense dedication to capturing his visions in new ways.
In this entirely new collection of the artist’s works—most of which have not been previously published—the Xenozoic world takes center stage. Schultz presents preliminary drawings and concept designs from his upcoming Xenozoic graphic novel, placed in context with an introductory text that addresses his decisions behind the new art. Plenty of poster-style images featuring Jack and Hannah are included as well. Carbon 3 also features images from Schultz’s Storms at Sea and his depictions of myth and pulp adventure. The inclusion of preliminary drawings along with the finished results gives insight into the choices the artist makes in the process of moving toward realization of his initial idea. Beyond his stunning use of brush, ink and graphite, there are examples of Schultz’s continuing development as a painter working in watercolor and gouache.
Carbon 3 represents two years of challenges and development in Mark Schultz’s work, as he continues to strive toward a goal of better realizing and communicating his vision of human engagement with a largely unknown and always exciting universe. The works found inside this volume are all important markers along his road toward that goal.

Simply add-on an additional $40 to your pledge and let us know. You will also need to double the shipping charge. If you have any questions we are here to help.
We expect to have your pledges shipped to you in September 2018. The designs for the books and prints are completed. We will send them to the printer immediately upon the completion of this campaign if we hit our goal. It takes approximately three months for everything to be printed, then to be delivered to us. We will ship them to everyone in mid-August immediately upon their arrival at our Flesk warehouse in Santa Cruz, CA.
All books are shipped within the U.S.A. by USPS Mail and will include tracking. Premium signed giclée prints shipped in the U.S.A. will ship by USPS First Class mail (small prints) or Priority Mail (large prints) and will include tracking.
The items shipped to our international friends usually take 3 weeks for delivery to your local post office, but can sometimes take up to 3-6 weeks depending on the country. Note that customs for your local country may hold on to packages for a week or longer and incur additional charges that are the responsibility of the backer. We know that shipping overseas is very expensive and we wish it was cheaper, too! We help by subsidizing some of the shipping cost. We make no money from the shipping.
A message from the Publisher, John Fleskes: What Kickstarter offers is the opportunity to create and do what we love, while connecting and giving back to our supporters in a personal way. This makes the process much more enjoyable than if we simply worked behind closed doors. It is also gratifying to have the opportunity to continually add value to the project through stretch goals. I've never felt that we are making products. Instead, we are making unique art books and prints. This is done with great care to best allow us to showcase Mark's art in a way that we can be proud of. We hope that you will cherish these books and prints just as much as we do.

Risks and challenges
Why you should trust Flesk Publications? John Fleskes answers:
I pride myself on having a sixteen year record of delivering over eighty books of the highest quality. I've run nine previous Kickstarter campaigns with artists such as Brom, Frank Cho, J.A.W. Cooper, Jeffrey Alan Love, Gary Gianni and Mike Mignola (Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea Studio Edition), Petar Meseldzija, Richard and Wendy Pini (Elfquest), Mark Schultz, and Daren Bader and Lance HaunRogue. Most of these have been on time. We are very open with our backers and communicate through updates often to keep you up to date.
In some cases, things don't always go exactly as planned in the publishing world. Much of the time they do, but sometimes an unexpected problem or delay arises. In the rare case that this happens, simply put, I deal with it and find a way to get the job done. I am very open about any challenges and like to share in the process so people know what's going on. I don't like surprises, and don't feel anyone else should either. I respect the artist, and our supporters too much to let them down. The good thing is that I've published over eighty books and I know how to get them shipped and delivered, and I know how to manage a schedule and keep projects on track, and I will stay motivated and energized to get the books into your hands when I said I would.
I can't thank everyone enough who has supported us before. You directly help us to make these beautiful books.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
