Sessions: Spectrum Fantastic Art Portraits by Greg Preston
A new book featuring the photography of Greg Preston highlighting the creators behind today's best contemporary fantastic art.
Welcome to our Kickstarter campaign! We have a new art book that we would love to publish.
This will be an art book featuring at least 50 artists that will include beautifully reproduced examples of their art, information about the artist, and an equally artistic photograph of the artist that will take place at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3 in Kansas City running May 9-11. (You can see a full gallery of samples by the artists at the Stainless Steel Droppings website here.) Also, we are sharing the proceeds with the artists!
But we need your help to make it possible. What we are aiming to do is to feature the art and a brief bio, plus a beautiful portrait by esteemed photographer Greg Preston, of fifty of today's top artists in the fantastic art field into an oversized high class hard cover art book. (Please see down below for the artist list.) All of these artists will be gathering at the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live event where Greg Preston will be setting up his photography studio right on the showroom floor.
If we have the good fortune to hit our goal, we will add stretch goals to increase the page count, book dimensions and we will add more free bonus goodies to our supporters. Please read on for the fine details about the book and the portrait prints by Greg Preston that we have available to help us reach our goal.
John, who is the publisher of the book and a part of the organization that is putting on the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live event in Kansas City, MO this May 9-11, explains:
I have invited noted portrait photographer Greg Preston and his crew to SFAL to set up a photo studio right on the show floor to take artist portraits throughout the event. With the permission of the artists, Greg and I will choose our favorite portraits and make a high-end, fine art style book collection. I really want to show the people behind the pictures; those who give us so much beauty, who entertain us and who fill our lives with wonder. Let's celebrate the artists and who they are, which goes right along with the mission of the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live event: The artists are the stars and let's showcase them in the best possible light.
One fun aspect of this book is that you can come to Spectrum Fantastic Art Live and watch Greg photograph and work with the artists. It's open to the public! What better way to see how we are doing with the project to stop by and see the process in person.
To date, here is the list of artists who will be included in the book. We will be revealing more names as new artists join in. We are guaranteeing that fifty artists who will be at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live will be featured in this book.
Allen Williams, Annie Stegg, Bill Carman, Camilla d'Errico, Cory Godbey, Craig Elliott, Dan dos Santos, Daren Bader, David Palumbo, Donato Giancola, Edward Howard, Frank Cho, George Pratt, Greg Spalenka, Gregory Manchess, Iain McCaig, Jackson Robinson, J. Anthony Kosar, John Picacio, Justin Gerard, Justin Sweet, Mark Chiarello, Mark Schultz, Omar Rayyan, Paul Bonner, Rebecca Yanovskaya, Steve Rude, Terry Dodson, The Shiflett Brothers, Tim Bruckner, Virginie Ropars and Wayne Barlowe.
Book Specifications and Layout
With this 11 inch wide and 10 inch tall, 112-page, hard cover book, each of the fifty artists will have a two page spread. The left facing page will feature a piece of art hand-selected by the artist with a brief bio of him or her. Then, on the right facing page there will be Greg Preston's gorgeous photograph of the artist. Please see our stretch goals for increasing the page count and dimensions.
Bonus for Book Pledge Kickstarter Supporters
Each copy of the book comes with a free bonus print featuring your choice of one of the following artists: Carl Barks, Jack Kirby, Moebius, Alex Toth or Dave Stevens. You will also receive the $10 tier postcard set for free as an additional bonus. And all pledges of $100 or more will get you listed in a special acknowledgments section in the book. Plus, free shipping is included in the U.S. See the different tiers for more details.
Why Kickstarter and why we need your help?
This is a dream project for Greg and John. And one that will in no way work without the support of our Kickstarter supporters. This book will receive all of the attention and care that Flesk Publications publisher, John Flesk is known for when working with artists and making a book, and likewise Greg will invest many hours of his time traveling to Kansas City to the show, setting up the studio environment, taking the pictures and then fine tuning each photograph back at his studio until they meet the high standards he has for himself. This book is the perfect marriage between artists, photographer and publisher, all of whom have the mutual aim of making a quality book that becomes something that is larger than any one of us and proves to be a work of art in of itself. We hope that with your help it will be possible.
John's thoughts on Greg
Greg Preston is recognized to be the premier portrait photographer in the art community. He has taken hundreds of exquisite pictures of many leading industry giants, while gaining the trust and admiration of us all. Greg has the rare ability to make everyone look good and to shine. Everyone is photogenic through his lens. He brings out the best in every subject and like any premier artist, can tell a story through a single picture.

Costs and Stretch Goals
The costs involved in a book of this scope are quite high. There are the costs of bringing Greg's equipment and crew to Spectrum Fantastic Art Live, the book manufacturing costs, plus editing and design costs from the Flesk team support crew. And we will pass on some of the money to the artists. The estimated costs for this book are $25,000. We need to raise $9,000 at a minimum to make this book happen. Should we gain your support, we will look into increasing the value of the book by upgrading the binding, paper, increasing the dimensions and page count, and doing everything we can to make this as gorgeous as possible through stretch goals. Should we have the good fortune to be in the position to do so, these stretch goals will be announced as the campaign progresses.
Stretch Goal #1 -- Add 16 pages to the book -- Unlocked at $18K
Even though our initial goal is $9K, $25K is our actual costs for the book. If we hit $18K we will add an additional 16 pages to the book of the very best photographs by Greg of the artists from around SFAL. This could be pictures during the awards ceremony, panels, workshops, or at the booths.
Stretch Goal #2 -- Increase the book dimensions -- Unlocked at $25KTo celebrate hitting are actual costs, we are hoping to make the book even bigger by increasing the book dimensions. We are researching the sizes available and will post the size soon. As the book size grows, the price you pay here on Kickstarter remains the same.
Schedule and Reward Delivery Date
Once the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live show is over, we will immediately get to work on the book. It will take a few months for Greg to fine-tune the portraits, and for us to gather the art and prepare the bios. And then we will design the book and have it sent to the printer. All in all, we expect to have the book shipped in December. A fresh update will be provided through our Kickstarter updates at the beginning of each month to keep you fully informed.
All pledge amounts include USPS Media Mail shipping with tracking within the U.S. This Kickstarter campaign is only available for shipping within the United States. Please see our FAQ section for an explanation as to why international shipping isn't offered.
About Greg Preston
Greg has been doing commercial photography in Las Vegas for over 20 years. Although Greg is known locally for the resort and lifestyle images that his studio excels in, Greg’s love of the illustration & fantasy art world is what compels him in his personal projects. Greg’s first book, The Artist Within, brought together 101 cartoonists, comic book artists, and animators into an award-winning book. The companion volume to this book will make its debut in 2015. He is also a co-author of a book by the late Tony Curtis, also debuting next year. Greg is honored to be asked to lend his talents and experience to Spectrum Fantastic Art in May of 2014. This is Greg’s first participation in the Spectrum program, and is excited that “Kickstarter” will be a part of making this happen. Greg is looking forward to meeting and photographing the exceptional artists that will be part of this amazing gathering of talents.

About Spectrum Fantastic Art Live
SFAL is a fantasy-focused art fair, in which creators can display, share and sell originals, prints, sculpture, crafts, toys and more to an audience of fans and peers. There is something for everything, including presentations, panels, displays, portfolio reviews, workshops, educational opportunities and the Spectrum 21 awards ceremony. In short, our goal is to honor the artists and put on a fantasy art convention that anyone is welcome to attend and enjoy.

Risks and challenges
Why you should trust Flesk Publications? John answers:
"I pride myself on having a twelve year record of delivering over fifty books on time and of the highest quality. And have I run three previous Kickstarter campaigns, one with Brom, another with Mark Schultz, both of which were delivered on time. And a third with Frank Cho which is on schedule for its October release date. Of course, things don't always go exactly as planned in the publishing world. Much of the time they do, but sometimes an unexpected problem or delay arises. In the rare case that this happens, simply put, I deal with it and find a way to get the job done. I am very open about any challenges and like to share in the process so people know what's going on. I don't like surprises, and don't feel anyone else should either. I respect the artist, and our supporters too much to let them down. The good thing is that I've published over fifty books and I know how to get them shipped and delivered, and I know how to manage a schedule and keep projects on track, and I will stay motivated and energized to get the books into your hands when I said I would. Bottom line, I would not have been around this long without an excellent track record."
